  • ughhh the main riff of this song is just sick.......

  • bitch you ain't from tulsa

  • Where have i been???? i wish i found her sooner.

  • Derivative.

  • fucking ads. i remember when there were no ads on youtube.

  • @BobDole3005 You have to wait 5 whole seconds to listen to a free song? Boo fucking hoo.

  • im a rapper but I'm digging her sound. very cool indeed

  • I'm gonna fall in love if I keep looking at this picture too long.

  • @tw16mock drop bitch :)

  • I love that fucked up guitar sound near the end, it really reminds me of the electronics/guitar on Dogs by Pink Floyd... she incorporates that sound really well with the synths etc

  • @haribo687 wow thank you i knew it was a pink floyd song, you just reminded me the exact one

  • just fuckin awesome

  • This is pretty wack music but if I were into wack shit, I'd say it was really talented and well-executed. Give credit where credit is due, namsayin, the girl put some work into this.

  • @omggarybuseyRULES Shit! Got kind of tight at 3:18.

  • @omggarybuseyRULES that's a great way of putting it. haha =)

  • @omggarybuseyRULES you mean this is wacky brilliant

  • 10 people need a surgeon

  • 1 more needs one too

  • i thought the accoustic version was good, never you mind

  • Lovely song...that would've fit nicely on the first Goldfrapp album -- just sayin'...

  • For a second there, I was expecting a dubstep drop at 4:18.

  • @Matadurr

Thank god some artists still have some class to not do things like that.

  • @dude11235

Agreed. Drops should stay in the genre they belong in.

  • Psychedelic unfathomable emotions that brings me to a state of mind that dates back

in the 1970s. The music us so eloquently perplex that in my imaginative world all the people were naked listening to this song. And a preponderant of marijuana leaves waiting to be smoked.

  • @CiaoBello21 Lol..what??

  • @crowned1queen I think St. Vincent is talking to you, because I hear her soft voices.

  • I didnt like this sonq at first bc i wasnt used to this type genre of music..but now i love this..as well as her other sonqs..

  • On the first album this album didn't sound that amazing. 10 weeks later and I'm in love. This song especially. it's phenomenal.

  • It might be me but I get a weird Sylvia Plath vibe from her.

  • i'll tap that ass...

  • 8 people need to be cut open!

    >:D

  • you know whats funny, i did spend my entire summer on my back...

  • @vennombrand You dirty slut. :P

  • I've been a fan of hers since Marry Me was released over 5 years ago, I'm so pleased with how she and her music have evolved. "Best finest surgeon, come cut me open" is a line from Marilyn Monroe's diary. Annie Clark is an excellent writer and composer, she does Marilyn justice here.

  • 이 죽인다입니다!

  • @drt60 what's up with that weird korean? '이거 죽이네요.' might be more proper :)

  • @DancingColourfulBob

That was essentially going to be my comment before I saw that you covered it already, hahaha

  • @asianpiglet Moving...? Sorry, but are you two on crack? I don't see it....when?

  • @vivelavidarocka you have to stare at it, and it appears to move. like a slow zoom in

  • @vennombrand Play it, then cut to the end, and you'll see the picture is at the same place it was the entire time.

  • It looks like the pictures moving, is the picture moving? Dear god it's moving

  • @DancingColourfulBob I also use internet when I'm drunk! We need something to block that! LOL

  • @DancingColourfulBob It almost looks 3D because of the quality

  • @DancingColourfulBob flaaashbaack!

  • followed rolling stone magazine interview to here. glad i did!

  • I am officially a St. Vincent fan. In the past, I liked a song or two, but this has to be the first album that I love of her in its entirety!

  • This song is strangely... sexy.

  • Umm btw im a fan and im Australian. But its the exception that proves the rule.

I just mostly love "your lips are red" "dumbo sessions" she has the most amazing intense eyes in that clip/gig that have been lost since with what the every man's expectation of beauty which has made her put made her put on make up etc.. Shame, imperfection is beauty

  • @serge2k10 why did you delete @wikipediabrown007's comment about people who think they're cool bc they know her first name? It wasn't directed at you....

  • Why are Kate Bush's fans so full of themselves?

Every time a "new" artist starts getting recognition, the comparisons start: "She did it better 100 yrs ago"

Me In particular can't see her influence on St. Vincent. Maybe I'm wrong. (If I am, please prove me)

People. You need to accept the fact that woman wasn't popular here in USA for whatever reason (I myself tried hard, but just couldn't digest her) and deal with it.

Nothing against Kate Bush, but YOUR arrogance and annoying self worthiness.

  • @vivelavidarocka Your Kate Bush comments are only relevant for mainstream. Also it's a trend in any artist's fanbase to have a few who obsess. Re your comment that she was not popular in US, again you are talking mainstream. She has a huge fanbase in the US and while I find some of her compositions indigestible, there are many that are sublime and uplifting. See: Aerial. Oversimplification and generalities typically render an argument moot and yours definitely falls in this category.

  • @flooberbloob Your opinion. If you aren't one of these people, disregard my comment. It's not for you.

"Huge fan base in the USA"?. Don't agree. We've had so many good female singers here that we haven't had the need to embrace one with a style too foreign for our taste. My opinion

  • @vivelavidarocka For our taste? you are speaking for 300 million Americans? So many good female singers? are you talking assembly line billboard stuff? Too foreign for our taste? OUR taste? Exactly who are you speaking for. You are clueless in the extreme. Your opinion is SO generalizing and mainstream focused it is rendered pointless. Go troll the pages of People mag where you belong.

  • @flooberbloob "troll"? funny. Trolling 101: Talk garbage about the subject of the video. This is a St Vincent's video. (Go troll the pages of People mag" What's that?) She has fans, right, but she never captured the massive recognition her fans think she deserved. Anyways we have Tori (w/out the over the top style of your idol) Good bye bushiite.

  • @vivelavidarocka you are all over the map with your comments. And as for Tori "look at me" Amos, she happens to acknowledge Bush as a huge influence. And since when does someone rate singers based on their country of origin. Bushiite? Based on all your comments (a lot of which have been hidden by youtube as spam, you are clueless in the extreme. Lastly , I was fully aware this is a St. Vincent video. As far as I can tell, you were the one who went on the anti-Kate Bush rant. Good Bye.

  • @flooberbloob Spam? Now you're seeing things..(same as me "attacking" someone I don't really care for)

Btw there's one song of hers that I really, really liked "Running Up That Hill". But Placebo's version.

    Ciao.

  • @vivelavidarocka She's from the US. Her fanbase LIVES IN THE US. To say otherwise is stupid. Do you live in the US even?????

  • @VentraleStar ,,I know,,

  • I love how her left eyebrow is higher than her right. She kewl.

  • Who disliked this song? What were they expecting..Catholic hymns?

  • Comment removed

  • I am diggin this song. Still haven't heard the rest of the album besides "Cruel." MUST GET.

  • I keep thinking this is going is a super slo mo video, but she doesn't ever move. Super super super slo mo?

  • she's so beautiful!

  • Pitchfork: Lyrically, there’s an occasional disconnect between the corporeal self and the spiritual self on Strange Mercy. You also write really freely about sex.

AC: [laughs] Oh! [looks down] I’m Southern!

Pitchfork: [laughs] It’s funny that you’re being shy about it because the songs are so frank, in a way. A line like “I spent the summer on my back” can be read...

  • @kaylashalaylaaaaa

AC: Oh, that sounds like sex, doesn’t it?

Pitchfork: Is it not supposed to be heard that way?

AC: It sure can be that. It can also mean depression, but it’s open to interpretation. This album is way more candid and closer to my heart than my other records; there’s always something extremely personal in the songs, but I may change the point of view from what I actually experienced.

  • Karen Carpenter Reincarnated ?????

  • @1957thack Karen Carpenter would be so lucky!

  • @1957thack Her style and music is nothing like Karen Carpenter, but I guess you can see it that way. They're both really soft and sweet with their singing haha

  • Jason Bentley and KCRW brought me here!

  • Oh gosh

  • houseofteeth.bandcamp.com

  • I saw her in concert recently. She's so cool!!!!! And she's such an amazing guitarist!

  • Fuck yeeeeeeeah

  • Sick beat, great voice; Fantastic fuckin' song.

  • I keep hearing this song on 89.3 The Current and I always think-- when I get back I'll look it up. But I never do ... until now. 0_o

  • ikind of annoys me how all female artists HAVE to be pretty.

IM not trying to discredit the talent of this woman...just sayin.

  • @funnyfacerful ? have you seen Florence the machine with out any make up on?

  • @funnyfacerful Well it just happen to be that pretty womans have more talent then less prettier womans apparently.

  • @funnyfacerful Look up Micachu and the Shapes. Sleater-Kinney.

  • @funnyfacerful its hollywood magic, theres a soul underneath it :)

  • A new Bjork, in other style!!! Wonderful girl!!!! Wonderful singer!!!

  • Discovered St Vincent at 1am.....it is now 4.30 am.....i can't go to sleep this music is too fucking good!!!

  • @madtie2 same deal hear :)

  • Holy effing sheet. This eats me up.

  • 3:10 oh my god

  • alot of people say this about sex. im not sure. but if it is then its a very disturbing metaphor for sex. "come cut me open"

  • @llamasarus1 Well, she's said numerous times that "Best finest surgeon...Come cut me open" were lines from Marilyn Monroe's journal or something. Also, the phrase "another attack" in the beginning indicates panic attacks which she gets as she has also said many times. When a journalist said that people sometimes think it is sex, she said, "Or depression,". She doesn't want people to really know, but I see it more as depression from how she has discussed it.

  • 3:55 sounds like Bootsy Collins showed up to make this song that much more cool.

  • @ishallnotpost hahahaha Bootsy is the man!

  • That first melody is ripped from "You Only Live Twice"... a good melody to rip.

  • she looks like someone just told her a bad joke

  • @TacooGrill-- thats effin hilarious. After i read this comment, I definately scrolled up to look at the picture again, lmaoooo

  • @TacooGrill haha I'm sorry, but i think ur comment was just the best ever. So yeah, good one lol.

  • Its kinda hard to hear begining of you only live twice influence without thinking about robbie willams' millenium.. but I can kinda hear it though. just a lil bit

  • does that picture slightly move? or it's me buzzing off pot.

  • an artist in her own right. stands out from the current female vocalist crowd.

  • perfect woman

  • Annie Clark <3

  • @Jonmad17 Feist's newer stuff is less retro and more pop. I wasn't talking about just vocals either but a similar slickness and attention to arrangement in production. When I listen to Kate Bush I hear a very unique approach to lyrics and production. When I hear Annie Clark or Feist I hear very repetitive self referential lyrics that do annoying things like spell out words or count to 8.

  • @erinmerle

Well considering Kate Bush has a song that attempts to count out pi to the hundredth decimal point ... maybe not the fairest of criticisms to make, eh?

  • @asdfhuliashduflasihf Having a conceptual approach to songwriting is kinda different than singing like you're a guest on sesame street. And another thing, St.Vinnie sounds a lot like Feist in her song "Cruel". Don't get me wrong. F and St.V are lovely talented ladies, they just aren't KB so why hold them up to that standard?

  • @erinmerle I don't think St. Vincent songwriting is as prosaic as u make it sound - perhaps she doesn't approach an album by attempting to forge thematic coherence the same way KB does, nor does she have as distinctive a voice as KB, but that doesn't make her a singer on sesame street. I think her music is unique & perhaps more disturbing than KB, who often loses the latter to overdramatisation. In any case I reject the dichotomy u present, that a singer is either KB or contrived and overclever.

  • @asdfhuliashduflasihf Okay, so maybe I am exaggerating what I find to be an annoying trend in music these days (infantilization of the listener). Drama is acceptable in KB's world but obviously not in deadpan St.V's (who hates actors apparently). This is just one of many reasons that they should not be compared to each other as it flatters neither. If there has to be a new Kate Bush let it be Shara Worden. I could stomach a comparison there.

  • @erinmerle you miss the mark. You must be an actor. Kate Bush is the worst comparison I have ever heard. Do you dislike joy in general?

Talent. last I checked, Kate doesn't make the guitar sound like things it really should not. DUMB.I love Kate Bush, and Annie Clark. Don't compare them. You look foolish. No wisdom. No knowledge of music at all. You people are awful

  • @erinmerle you guys argued about this last month, so i'm late to the battle. it got me thinking about the differences in both artists. i think it can be summed up very easily. kate bush would be more of a romantic artist and st vincent would be more of a classical artist. the romantic style in the vein of beethoven's bombastic and emotional, and yes dramatic pieces. classical style in the vein of mozart's cerebral, subdued, and yes (also) dramatic pieces.

  • @erinmerle Btw, this is coming form someone who is an absolute HUGE Kate Bush fan and who has bought all her albums and annoyed classmates by screeching Wuthering Heights at ear-piercing volume.

  • @erinmerle they are all different people. I would have thought that people with seemingly good taste would realize that music is meant to be enjoyed. Kate Bush comparisons? Comparisons are odious. You people are not music fans, you are narcissists. Get your own guitar and see if you can run up anything.

  • @FlaviasCucumber I wasn't the one who made the comparison. Read a little further back and you'll see that I'm with you on not comparing them.

  • best song in the album >.< love it!!!!!

  • I'm guessing she's a bond fan, check out the beginning of "you only live twice"

  • Who, boy or girl, is not in love with Annie Clark? I love her as a musician, as a down-to-earth person from interviews, her other-worldly beauty, and how badass she is as a fellow guitarist. That voice... those lyrics.

  • i'm dusting off my old looping pedal and spending all day figuring this out. it's gonna be awesome

  • @STE4LYOURFACE saw her last night - her guitar riffs played live on this cut - no loops - her guitar chops are phenomenal and unique....fleet fingered, precise, innovative, a total original. again - no guitar loops.

  • @flooberbloob no she doesn't loop live, but that's not what I was saying. I needed the looper to figure out the ring modulator part. Which I did, which was awesome. it has a weird tuning.

  • I hear alot of Kate Bush & Feist in this album - either way - I love it!

I'm a bigger fan of her last album, but this is amazing! Lovely discography so far Annie!

  • @Vindrag Wow im glad i found someone who thinks the same as me. This album is very kate bush in its experimentation.. i just wish kate bushes latest LP was like this.

  • @SilentGig1 Kate Bush? How so? I just don't hear it. Feist yes.

  • @erinmerle I don't hear Feist at all. Feist's voice has a classic-late-60s soulful quality to it, while Annie's has a more modern-pop edge. Listen to Limit to Your Love and you'll get a good idea of Feist.

  • I've been jamming to this album for 2 days. I hear Talking Heads, Bjork, and Grizzly Bear

  • 3:10 onwards sounds like an awesome tune from the old TMNT SNES games...

  • "Surgeon" dissects human hearts, nerves and brains with a wicked-cool touch, all angelic billows and throbbing Euro-erotics. The only thing that comes close to St. Vincent's level of devastating madness is Dicey and Paprika's cover of "Born to Be Wild."

  • lol ppl who think they're cool bc they know her real name

  • @WikipediaBrown007 yea..except for the fact that her name is in the video description..

  • @WikipediaBrown007 True, but I think a lot of people like to know the names of the contributing artists in a band, maybe to give more of a human face or to associate with other projects he/she may be involved with.

Like, I wouldn't call Mr. Bungle Mike Patton, but It's nice to know that he's the voice of the band.

BTW Annie Clark IS St. Vincent.

  • @WikipediaBrown007 'riley carroll1111' is better than us

  • Comment removed

  • i love this song it amaizing

  • I love driving really fast and hearing that guitar part @ :56 lol. it goes so well with each other

  • Epic

  • so its the starring game..

  • @mattgarcia1 she wins

  • Starting to sound like the knife...

  • I dont know how i ended up here but this song even tho its genre is far away to what i listen, is the shit

  • The 3 people who seem to dislike this piece don't deserve to have stumbled upon great music!

  • After both her previous efforts in a row, I listened to this track - which made it clear that, as assumed, Strange Mercy would be a safe buy.

The new (retro) developments found here are not without their parallels elsewhere (a RYM reviewer thankfully pointed out Destroyer's "Kaputt", helping out my memory), but who cares as long as the result stands up for itself. I don't mind krauty electronics influences for sure (Klaus Schulze, anyone?).

Sonic balance seems a little bottom-heavy though.

  • this is both the strangest and best music I've heard in ages..

  • The beginning brings me through the late 80's, early 90's. Then it progresses to late 90's to 2000's. By the end, I'm popping and locking. now now

  • First 3 minutes: 3 million points

    Last minute: -1 million points

    2 million's pretty awesome overall.

  • @hylton11 the last minute is the best part!

  • @MicahBuzan It sounds like Yngwie Malmsteen cock-rocking out on a keytar.

  • @hylton11 i disagree. it adds more dynamics to the song and leads off the chorus perfectly. the song starts off mellow, then gets progressively more tense until, finally, the tension is released through the solo (eargasm).

  • wtf? this is so awesome!

  • She could easily turn me straight.

  • @MnNice21 Haha, I was saying the same thing in comments the first few times I saw her.

  • Easily, best song 2011

  • and also she is soooo awesome live :D thank god i saw her! and she's an angel. marry me!

  • MaNY Thanks to KCRW & Jason Bentley for melodically leading me here!!

  • enamorado

  • like.

  • Dis shit go

  • so chill

  • im 105 years old and i love this

  • @ColtonBrassie you old cunt. i love you

  • Marry me Annie.

  • wow. absolutely amazing.

  • WHY IS SHE SO BEAUTIFUL FUCK
