I def feel that langauge is very important... but I do not support the use of only one language. I think we should all strive to learn as many languages as possible because each language and its accompanying culture can present a new way of thinking, further opening minds to unknown possibilities. One global language is harmful as can be seen in the way that so many cultures who have adopted the English language have also lost some of their individual identity.
I don't think one universal language would solve all problems, even less so if it was that of one nation because that would give a sort of primacy to that nation. But learning the language of another country (China, Irak, whatever) is an important thing because if nothing else it shows that one is willing to make a huge effort to communicate with people of that country.
what should be that international language in your opinion?
...culture especially America has led to this global situation. I do agree that learning an additional language is important (i myself am bilingual and hope to learn one more come university). I don't think however that there should be a language police if you will that would force global understanding upon the world via a language. I can still hate someone whether it is in German of Swahili
The idea are proposing is basically the world of Blade Runner (language wise). Not to mention attempts at making a universal language such as esparanto failed, and english is already the language which has been globalized. The Chinese are making massive efforts to learn English as is the rest of the world. I am not saying that english is better than any other language it is just the major language of oue age. Technology (internet, computers) is dominated by english as is the influence of western
I think language can be a barrier to understanding each other, yet there are much bigger problems which are hampering cooperation. I like what you are doing here with these videos and I agree and am very interested in most of what you say, but this I disagree. Politcs, money, religion, ethnicity etc. are much more potent factors. There have been so many civil wars in which both sides have spoken the same language and they still disagreed.
It's not so much that a unified language would cure cancer, but more that with everyone being understood verbally by everyone else, it eliminates alot of the trust issues that some people have with people from another country. You fear what you don't understand, and I always feel like people speaking a language that I don't understand are insulting me, thinking that it's ok, because I don't know what they are saying. It would help with trust. I'm all for it. I planned on learning chinese anyway.
I entirely agree with your idea that people need to learn more languages... and that languages are a great way to bridge the gaps between the differences between different cultures. I do not, however, think that we require a unified language that everyone can learn. It sounds so imperialist don't you think?
Anyway, even with a unified language, I cannot see how it would cure cancer (or any other problems). People can still relay information with each other with translators and thats importan
way too simplistic solution. Sure, we should all be multilingual and (correspondingly) think more diversely. But then you make a comment that seems to contradict that:
"one language that we can build a basis of trust with" is it 1 language or many? I value diversity so I hope its the latter. I laughed about your comment "A translator causes the war." Greed and lies can happen in any language. I think the problem stems from ethics more than language (also the attachment to free market fantasies)
crossmack, I was forced to "learn" your linguage in school for 7 years but in 1/2 (what is the word?) of your video I only understood "Bubew, Kreakingh, Xlaxion, Wowkin...", so I can't answer you :-(
I think you have a point, but we shouldn't give up our languages. The United States really needs to push for bilingualism, we gain so much by speaking multiple languages, but at the same time there is a barrier. I'd like a world where every country has their own native language, but also speaks a common language with the rest of the world. I doubt it will ever happen and I honestly don't completely agree with you, but it is a world issue.
Please don't patronize me or one of the two movements to which I've dedicated my life. It suprises me to no end that more people haven't seen the sarcasm dripping from this video in every second.
I'm Korean/Japanese/Peruvian, and one of my native languages is Spanish but....in my opinion. I don't think this world could ever have a universal auxiliary language. However, I think Americans can go a long way by embracing Spanish as a second language which many Americans already speak and then go on to enter into the extremely complex (syntax and difference wise) Chinese-Mandarin.
latin. maybe chinese is the most widely used language but most languages are at least somewhat based on latin. Going back a couple hundred years all educated people could speak latin and any writing that was to be taken seriously was written in it.
"Esperanto is the most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language. The name derives from Doktoro Esperanto, the pseudonym under which L. L. Zamenhof first published the Unua Libro in 1887. The word itself means 'one who hopes'. Zamenhof's goal was to create an easy and flexible language as a universal second language to foster peace and international understanding."
But it shouldn't be english because english language is connected with english culture and we should try to maintain world's cultural diversity. In conclusion, the best way is to create a whole new language.
I'm German and I learn English, Spanisch and Chinese. I hope one day I will be able to speak these 3 languages fluently cos that would mean that i can communicate with the great majority of people on the world. So, it is good to learn other languages but i personally think that we should create some kind of universal language that everyone has to learn.
i agree with you that a lack of communication causes many problems and that english-speaking people should learn other languages. The problem is that because of the world dominance of american and british culture and language caused by their extraordinary imperialism the've become arrogant and they dont want to learn foreign language, they want other people to learn their language.
I agree that Global Communication is important, vitally important for the future of mankind, yet, that is a mute point if there is lack of communication within the walls of our own homes, our next door neighbors, withing our own communities. And the biggest of all, objective communication towards self. Lets start here and clean up before taking on the world. Oh, and it has started. We are all one, Robin
I'm on a similar kick right now where I'm obssessed with technology isolating people in the attempt to bring them together so I think I get where you're going with your human interaction gig. It kept cutting my comments short!
I get where you're coming from about language but it needs to go further from that. Here in the US we are so isolated from the rest of the world and so sure of our own superiority that I think we choose not to understand or learn about the rest of the world which ultimatly cuts communication. We need to understand the cultures and needs and problems and desires of other people before we can ever really begin to communicate, before we even address language.
It's very much the same here in England, perhaps especially because we had an empire. English people tend to have the feeling that others should learn our language. Of course in the continental EU, where all the countries are next to eachother, it is the norm to be multilingual.
I think the main problem is that so many people in Europe do speak English, since it's profitable in places like holiday resorts. So noone here can see the point in learning other languages if they don't have to.
A sad thing is that there have been efforts to improve global communication in the past which have failed. Consider Esperanto ( there's a website if you're interested ), a language designed to become the global tongue. Have you ever known anyone who speaks it?
It's one thing to give people the opportunity to learn, it is another to create a will. As with so many issues, there is a huge lack of will that must first be overcome.
P.S. Sorry this is text, still need to sort out video capabilities.

Why should English be the language of choice for the whole world when it's only the second most spoken language? Why don't we all learn Chinese then?
English is a poor choice for a second language. Esperanto is a good choice. It's very easy as a "second" language. It's also very fun to learn.

we need a global language
leaning a language that already exists is going to cause alot of contraversy
and if this language is to help the peace
then it should be something new entirely
