i was watching family guy, and they said "we heard a loon". i was like wtf?? so i googled it, and THANK GOD i found this cause i wouldve been wtf all night
You are hearing the loon's tremolo; a call of distress. Probably indicating that this boat with its video is too close. Too many incidents like this cause the loons to leave lakes and can also result in stress to the young.
Will there ever be anything more beautiful then the different languages of animals to us? Humans. We consider ourselves complex beings...yet other creatures surpass us in so many ways, in knowledge, beauty, and how they live even. We are imperfect. They are not.
I was actually woken up by this bird call when I was camping just off of Canmore Alberta, it was beautiful, a wonderful bird that deserves to be on our one dollar coin.
I was sleeping in a tent up in the adk. mountains and I thought it was a girl laughing/crying I was really afraid, but they are so rare from where I am it was my first sighting/hearing of the loon!!!
When I was growing up we would go to Loon Lake by Vergas, MN every summer. I would hear this at every sunset.
The call just makes you feel so incredibly alone, like there's nobody else around for 100 miles. One of a few mesmerizing sounds that can relax you and freak you out at the same time. Very trance inducing.
@kasteman1 i know the feeling. i especially love it when they are far enough that you can use the hand thing and they still hear you and call back. its like you are having a real convo with a loon
i was in montana most of last summer and their calls rang through the valley.
fishing one time in spoon lake the current was taking me towards two of them, which as i got closer they started yelling, more and more panicked. when i finally snapped out of my baked state, and realized they were probably going to attack me if i got any closer i started paddling away as fast as i could haha.
Yes, this is THE voice of the northern wilderness that I fell asleep to, woke to and worked to from mid April until late October -early November. It is unreplaceable. I see some other videos here teaching how to do loon calls. Please don't EVER use them during nesting & chick rearing seasons, and don't approach loons on the water. Far too many chicks & adults have died this way.
I was watersking up in harrison michigan and while i was waiting for the boat to come around a loon came out of water about 6 feet from me. At first i was kinda scared because it just came out of nowhere. It was so cooL!
and here we have the uneducated masses fearmongering about the oil-boogeyman. Why would oil companies be interested in a tiny lake in minnesota you fucking halfwit?
Camping on Burntside and other Echo trail lakes,I fall asleep to the sounds of loons and bullfrogs,God made this perfect world and all of us, what a beautiful download
simply amazing!! one of my favorite bird calls! This is why i love Minnesota so much. i would so love to go camping more often and go on a nature walk and just get away from the city for once ^_^.
loons are in other places then Minnesota. There also in NY. Like in the Aderondack Mountains. The aderondack mountains are beautiful with the loons calling throughout them.
Is it odd that I don't like the sound of the call? It scares me. Really scares me. We hear them up at our camp in the mountains and... They scare me... Not the bird itself, just the call.
The Common loon is not endangered, and if visiting a remote region of Canada or the Adirondacks (or a remote spot in the lower 48 in winter) they are (how ironically) a common bird
