  • "Owning Mahowny" is to gambling addiction what "Requiem for a Dream" is to drug abuse.

  • which casino was it?

  • @JazzKeyboardist1 you mean which one in Atlantic city ?

  • @JazzKeyboardist1 > Caesars Atlantic City

  • Can someone tell me why he (the player) is dealing the BJ hands???

  • @DMenase24 Was that really blackjack? I was going to ask what game that was because if this is blackjack, it is the most bizarre version of BJ I have ever seen.

What comes to the player dealing, I think if you are coming to play with 1.4 million they let you do it if you want :) In the movie that guy is a regular after all and lost huge amounts of cash.

  • I just did a little investigation, the game is Baccarat.

  • @kieku87 Haha yes, I learned that too. What an odd game!

  • @DMenase24 thts baccarat

  • odds of winning at a blackjack table is like 1 in 6 ........

you have to be either rich or have a very boring life to want to risk betting like that lol

  • @CanadianChronic2121 Not true at all....House holds 1+% advantage over you depending on if you know basic strategy and the rules.

  • @1eyefor2eyes

Most i've ever seen someone Lose is 13 bets in a row .

    Indian Casino's count their cards..

  • The Gambler ( James Caan ) is also good film.

  • First time I saw Hoffman was his few scenes in Boogie Nights . I thought to myself , as an actor , this guy is the genuine article .

  • 5:15 was one of the best scenes ever... great acting

  • Great movie. My only complaint is that the Atlantic City casinos scenes weren't convincing as looking like AC casinos.

  • @habyss

That's what AC looked like back in the 80's, in fact, it looked more amature and nickle and dime than what's portrayed in this movie.

  • cant find this anywhere online. Damn I wanna see it and the local rental doesnt have it... actually the local rented just closed shop. :(

  • @rareram

There is a copy on stagevu as of today, June 6, 2011.

  • i hate to say it, but im one of these addicts. i feel your pain dan.

  • @rg0r Get help while you can. It only gets worse. Take it from me....I know

  • It wouldn't be the New Jersey State police investigating it would be the New Jersey Gaming Control Board Investigating.

  • "You wanna know how we're doing? Talk to me at 4 am." The best line in the movie!

  • great movie, watched it yesterday. Hoffman is great actor as usual

  • best gambling movie ever. period. stick ben afleck and matt damon up your ass, the sting can be tossed in the can also...sorry newman and redford fans....this movie is tits

  • If a man wins a fortune in Las Vegas and it turns out that he used stolen money, then what will happen to the winnings?

  • @headmark915 he will return stolen money + penalties, he can enjoy in rest of it

  • @seventeenseventyfour There is an appearent error in the han where one hand is 5 and the other is 7. In either case the person with 5 should have taken a third card. What I wrote will make more sense if you start from the bottom.

  • @seventeenseventyfour If a hand with a total of 8 or 9 is dealt, it is a natural and no more cards are dealt. and a winner is declared unless it is a tie. The dealer always stands on 7. If the player has 5 or less, he takes a card. If the player does not take a card, the banker takes a card on 5 or less and stands on 6 or more. He is being paid as if he is playing the player hand, based on the position of the chip racks on the layout.

  • @seventeenseventyfour He is playing baccarat. There are two hands, player and banker. The proposition is that the hand that you pick will be the one that comes closest to nine. If you bet on the banker hand and win, you pay a 5% commission to the house. Add up the points in each 2-card hand. If you have a face card, they count ten. If the sum is more than ten, the last digit matters.

  • One of the best film sequenses I have watched in a long time.Seymor Hoffman at his very best, now this is acting folks.

  • the only part I don't like about this part is right after you hit the point of 8 in craps you need to establish the point and repeat to win. One 8 one the come out roll will not give you shit. you need seven or eleven. to win after the point you need at least to rolls, one to establish the point and one to win. they say shooter need 8 win. rolls again 8 winner, no you get 8 the whole prosses starts over again. without seven eleven on the come out you need at least two rolls to win.

  • Shut your damn tard mouth. Mahowny knows how to gamble dude.

  • @fVc4FACE You can have your bets "on" at the come-out roll, making it possible for a point of eight to win on the come-out. Suppose that you made a bet on 8 during the previous roll, some other number won, and didn't remove your bet. Most of the time, bets on the layout are "off" at the come-out with the exception of line bets (pass/don't pass) and one-roll bets like eleven and craps. Had I been calling the game, I would have said something like "Winner eight! The point is eight.".

  • This is one of the best films I've ever seen in my life. Hoffman is amazing- total embodiment of the character. The movie was so entertaining and fascinating.

  • Why didn't the two Canadian cops just arrest him in Atlantic City?

  • @critias7 They weren't building a case on him they were building a case on his bookie, at that point. No point in arresting someone if you can't convict.

  • 'Dan!! Honor as always. Honor and a pleasure!"

  • excellent film

  • This film captures the essence of the drug called "ACTION"...and every true degenerate gambler out there knows it's true!

  • 1774, I think you're talking about Bacarrat.

Mahowny takes the cards out the shoe. They are distributed to Banker/Dealer, and play proceeds from there.

  • What are u talking about?

He was playing Bacarrat and Craps.

    21/Blackjack later.

  • I bought this movie on sale because of Hoffman and I have to say, LOVED it!

    Where was this movie hiding?

    Awesome soundtrack too!!

  • gasnra09 - I found this film in England. It cost me four dollars! A great hidden gem of a film. The book is fantastic as well.

Let me know of any other favourites of yours.

  • By Richard Grassby-Lewis and The Insects

  • it's not black jack you non gambling retards

  • 'ribs, no sauce and a coke, right?"......john hurt fkn rulz

  • more clips from this movie......PLEASE!!!!!

  • its black jack

    he wins

    he gets the money

  • Definitely NOT blackjack.

  • BRILLIANT acting!

  • I would totally be a leg-hanger like that black guy. Try to mooch off Mahowny and get him to spend his cash of drugs and hookers.

"C'mon Dan, fuck Atlantic City and lets fly to VEGAS baby.. where the REAL action is!"

  • Very cool video.I will vote for it!

  • Well, Its just like loosing money in the stocks market... Despite of the loss some people just go on and on and i dont know why but they do and I guess there is some thrill associated with it !!

  • PUTAINS DE CANADIENS

  • lol I think mahoney is a pretty cool guy he is a gambling addict and doesn't affraid of anything

  • WHO WAS PHONE ??

  • btw Victor Foss (John Hurt) as club manager was acting Elephant Man

  • the guy was fired because the manager saw him telling the player to quit.

  • nope, he was fired cause he brought him an empty fuckin' bag

  • just a flat-out BRILLIANT movie...

  • 5:20 - 5:45 is the perfect depiction of the gambling addict! Up so much, but no, can't leave, just got there! Got to have MORE! This is my second favorite movie about the true highs, lows, rush, and addiction of gambling. The Canadian film "Luck" (2003) is my favorite, and I'm an American.

  • It´s me !....ouh GOD !

  • Ladies and gentleman pay attention: This is a real actor. Many in Hollywood pretend to be actors but this guy is the real thing. They are very rarely seen in bad movies and most Americans will not know their names. If you only enjoy explosions, car chases, or hot chicks in movies odds are you will never see this guy or know he exists. He was in MI3 but everyone is allowed to be in a summer blockbuster once in a while. Besides he was damn good in it!

  • can you say that on english now ?

  • I thought it was pretty clear.

  • Hands down, you're absolutely right. Phil Seymour Hoffman is an amazingly talented actor. The only other actor who is up at his level is Kathy Bates.

  • I think there are more people at his level than just bates. Daniel Day Lewis for one.

  • your out of your mind.....

  • @olivemike81 i agree, he has what they call '' energy'' , like little soft words that creates energy

  • thats me at chucky cheese

  • god this movie is me....maybe not the same stakes...but jesus christ have I lost some serious money in casinos. and fuck you guys that will say yeah whatever...I'm talking tens of thousands

  • I like your story, I am casino co-owner :)

  • one of the most under rated movies ever. i hate movies like two for the money where the gambler wins at the end because ultimately the gambler always loses and thats how the story should end.

  • this is some drama for yur ass

  • Just an incredible flick. This guy is why I love the movies

  • great movie the music was fantastic but i canot get a cd any where ..anybody can give me an idea where to buy a copie?

  • The Hoff is magnificent as the GAMBLER FOOL

  • This is how real gamblers act. If you are a gambling addict you can definetly relate.Just go to any casino and watch they are there.

  • Very sad that some people can't seem to help themselves.

  • He Can't Stop!

    Wow!

  • hehe, well he "knows" his job :P

  • Bernie i just got here. lol
