The battery will probably have less capacity in order to make space for the charging circuit. But the increased convenience it can bring may well justify the decrease in capacity. Furthermore, it will be much easier to find a generic battery manufacturer to make this battery than persuading those big guys in the business to build the charging unit into their products.
The beauty of eCoupled technology is the flexibility and simplicity of design opportunities. The charging circuit is low profile and diminutive in size. In the remote control shown in this demonstration, Fulton engineers have actually replaced the batteries with a supercapacitor which has nearly limitless recharge and discharge capabilities while maintaining the exact same form factor for the device. Imagine never having to worry about dead batteries in your remote control ever again!
Most wireless charging devices on the market right now requires the use of an additional adapter which makes the whole wireless idea much less attractive. Is it possible to design a replacement battery with built-in charging circuit that is compatible with the original battery, similar to the USBCell concept?
We realize that wireless power adaptors are not the ideal solution for most consumers and are simply an interim step to full integration. However, we also realize that there is tremendous demand from consumers to retrofit the billions of installed consumer electronics devices they currently own.
Not all consumers will want to immediately go out and purchase a brand new cell phone in order to enjoy the convenience of wireless charging (especially if they just got a new phone with 2 year contract!) so a sleek new eCoupled-enabled protective case would make perfect sense a consumer in this situation.
Likewise, leveraging the existing power distribution infrastructure that already exists (in this video, the set top box already contains the primary charging circuitry) enables simple adaptive integration opportunities for manufacturers and consumers alike.
Fulton Innovations long-term vision is for eCoupled technology to be fully integrated into devices and infrastructure in order for wireless power to be as seamless as possible. This is why we are diligently working with dozens of industry-leading OEMs and ODMs to incorporate eCoupled technology into their products.
