  • FUCK YOU Carmack !!! He did not let go Rge for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.

  • And, yeah, Rage failed.

  • SUCK IT UNREAL 3!

  • This tech looked impressive in 2007. When RAGE released in late 2011, the tech looks last gen, compared to newer engines, like Battlefield 3's Frostbite 2 engine. Cmon Carmack, get your mojo back man!

  • I remember watching this back when it happened... what happened??? Where's RAGE for my mac???

  • Fuck you John Carmack, PC version of RAGE was broken like a piece of shit and you blame Nvidia and AMD/ATi for your mistake. Both PS3 and Xbox 360 suffers from horrible texture pop in. You spent 5 years developing a piece of broken shit. I will never buy your product again.

  • @EpicHotCheese You realise why right? They had to use at least 5 different compression methods to stick 1 TB of resources onto a 25gb disk. The popup textures are due to there not being enough power in the consoles GPU to pull the texture out of the page files quick enough

  • Hay at 0:00 isn't that good old Steve Jobs?

  • 4 years later... looks worse

  • i see Steve Jobs!

  • Why the hell are they even at WWDC...

  • Totally wish they would remake DOOM 1....

    Same Gameplay

    Remastered audio

    Remastered music

    and...

    id Tech 5. XD

  • John Carmack is a legend.

  • This truly is the best future game tech. (Frostbite 2.0 is also an amazing engine) This game would look 5x better if it ran a 30fps and had dx11 support but the consoles bring down the graphics a bit, but Doom 4 will truly show its true potential bcuz it runs at 30 fps and I cant wait.

  • @mattbassace None of Carmack's engines have "DX11 support" because they don't use DirectX. They're all OpenGL based.

  • @tapo yeah and OpenGL is kinda outdated i wishes they could use directx on rage and not the ugly OpenGL

  • @cockmaster2006 OpenGL is just a method for communicating with a graphics card. It isn't outdated or ugly. Rage uses OpenGL 4.2 which just came out this August.

It isn't as easy to use as Direct3D, but it still dominates all non-gaming fields (like CAD) and is the standard for 3D on Linux, Mac, Android, and iOS.

  • It's hilarious when tech demos are shown to an audience who don't give a fuck about the finished product. Or did Mac users start being gamers behind my back? :D

  • He's place #1 on my list of the greatest game designers and programmers. this guy is great.

    #2 david braben

    #3 peter molyneux

  • @adsci How bout a guy named Tim Sweeney? He's should be ahead of Peter molyneux considering half the games today run on unreal tech. He's right behind Carmack. Carmack still #1

  • @mattbassace oh yeah, tim sweeney. another "epic" legend. i just didn't follow him that much. i bet there are even more who deserve to be on the list. in the end its my personal taste ;)

  • Long story short: John Carmack did everything, a large amount of games simply used modified id Tech engines, (Half Life, Call of Duty, MOHAA etc,), even the source engine (Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike Source) is a heavily modified quake engine. And John Carmack worked on all those engines I believe, basically he did everything.

  • Actually, the original Doom (1993) was a ripoff of Half-Life 2, which itself was a mod for the then-popular playstation game Super Mario Bros 2. Then, Tony Blair hired Tina Turner and Stewie Griffin, who ported it to the coleco-vision and called it "doom".

  • It seems Carmack still likes Apple's techologies, since the NeXTstep age. AFAIR, the previous generation of this engine, id Tech 4, was first shown at Macworld.

  • These guys are the grandfather of FPS games. I love ID Tech. I emailed John Carmack about an DOOM 4 game. I wanted it to be about Angelfire. He would be an OSS spy. He would infiltrate a Nazi base. And fight Nazis and DEMONS! :)

  • is John Remero dead? I keep forgetting :D

  • @MrEverythingepic To win the game, you must kill me JOHN ROMERO!!!!!!

  • None of the current game engines come close to what is possible on idTech 5.

  • cryengine 2 better

  • @capatais777 nope

  • @MouthofSaurons cryengine 2 the best

  • @capatais777 CryENGINE 2 provides visually pleasing results, but scales horribly towards older hardware configurations, with greatly diminishing returns and grants insignificant performance compared to the visual quality.

That is not the case with IdTech 5. This engine delivers great visual results, but with the core principal of a fluid and fast gaming experience. That is achieved with great optimization and unique rendering technologies, such as the Virtual Texturing technology.

  • @MouthofSaurons i like big usses of pc

  • @MouthofSaurons Just curious, how does id Tech 5 compare to CryENGINE 3? Since I'm sure that CE3 fixes a lot of the flaws the CE2 had. Again, I'm not trying to argue I'm just curious.

  • id softwares compaction would probably be epic games. the unreal engine looks just as good and is licensed out more too. what engine do you think sells more games,

  • John Carmack and Ken Silverman - Legends!

  • Comment removed

  • john carmack defined the FPS genre once, I hope he does that again!

  • If you notice at 1:40 that guy is playing with the Soul Cube from Doom.

  • idk, The engine might be great (I hope it will be), but I have seen better and more realistic looking graphics from other games.

I just hope this game is modifiable or at least doom 4 will be.

  • @DMalenfant1 This demo is 3 and a half years old. The engine and the game looks a whole lot better than it did back then. It looks pretty breathtaking now and it will look even better over the next fews months until it's release. He also notes that they put this all together in 10 days.

  • @Chigokai1080 You can put most things together in 10 days if you have enough people working on it.

  • @TheRobin1232

My primary concern at this time is how Id is going to survive now that it's been bought up.

I have not seen one dev survive for long after purchase and Bethesda hasn't made a quality game since Morrowind. One could say they do give a damn and thats why they bought Id for it's skills and know how.

But on the other hand it could simply be Bethsoft being jackasses, we'll see how Carmack tackles this and how Bethesda responds.

  • there has been talk that Skyrim is useing the id Tech 5 engine as now that Zenimax owns id software and have ditched the gamebyro engine bout time after the lazy re skinning of new vegas i hope that Skyrim will be awsome i think it will ''JUST DONT FUCK IT UP LIKE YA DID NEW VEGAS''

  • dude the cryengine just pwns that thing IN THE FACE!it's just that the cryengine hasnt been pushed to its limits.but hey, crymod did it.and it's with crymod that the cryengine is the most powerful game engine around here.

  • @RaYk1LL3r

ok go look at it now

  • @Alaxh gimma a link mate.but hey, dont take me wrong.i'm not saying this engine sucks.it looks actually so good.but the cryengine is just better.that's all.and if it's not, crytek CAN and WILL make it better.and it's the engine that powered metro 2033 on the pc right?

  • @RaYk1LL3r

Metro 2033 uses the 4A engine.

So not only are you wrong, you're also talking out of your fucking ass.

The cryengine is horribly optimized and it falls short in comparison to Id Tech 4 which ran on most systems during it's release. And Tech 4 was known as the poorly optimized id engine.

  • The engine looks alot more impressive than this now. This demo was in 2007.

  • frostbite engine 3 ftw!!

  • john carmack is awesome!

  • Carmack is the shit. I love listening to him speak about techy stuff.

  • im not gay but i will suck that dude dick just becouse who he is

  • @123456cephiro that's what you call being a Geek

  • @123456cephiro this means you are gay. Not actual gay, but a potential gay.

You just need someone to push you to it. :P

  • Yes yes and YES!! Every popular company from today made their first games with an edited version of IdTech, from old to new:

    -InfiniteWard,Bungee,Valve, and lots o' others

--John Carmack is a legend! FTW!!!!

  • Without Carmack, there would be no Infinity Ward, and there would be no Call of Duty or Modern Warfare.

  • @GoldenKevin you say it as if it's a bad thing

  • This Is the same Game Engine i think that the elder scrolls 5 will use

  • @MullanLadd no they confirmed that they are not using id tech 5 too bad but maybe theres will be good 2

  • @MullanLadd Source?

  • @MullanLadd It is going to use the same engine as elder scrolls 5 and Rage !!!

  • If it wasn't for John Carmack... there wouldn't be VALVe probbaly... and without VALVe, there might not be RAGE...

  • No doubt that iD have always been a reference in technology, but since Quake 3 (1999) they have sorta, lost the touch. Rage doesn't look that good, Tech5 is again a DirectX 9 native engine (DirectX9 are from 2001) and gameplay seems like the old school iD-Raven shooters. We still have to play the game, but it doesn't look like they learned the lesson from Valve in 2004. We'll see.

  • @sm4sh3d Basing it on DirectX 9 makes sense- WindowsXP is still pretty much the world's most used Operating System (certainly in the Western world) and it can't run DX10. Plus DX10 isn't currently ported to any non-Microsoft platform and doesn't have any real equivalents, making it difficult to port games.

  • I hate ppl saying this game is copying other games, its been in development for almost 4+ years

  • John carmac is good at making engines but hes fucking shite at making games with good gameplay. Hes a fucking geek

  • Can Id Software give me some programs to edit doom 3 maps really quick like GTASA map editor?

  • dude this is RAGE game,from 2007

  • lol that's Rage. That was 3 years ago!

  • Carmack is Albert Einstein in disguise.

    Genius man.

  • JOHN CARMACK IS PART OF DOOM AND QUAKE DNA :)... pure genius

  • Awsome! This new engine will rock!

Id did invent FPS games and its awsome the same guys that did it still work for id (some of them anyway).

  • cool!

  • So what? Mac's only have certain hardware config's, making it easier to test and demo stuff.. what's the big deal?

  • you have a good point

  • This engine will be... Epic? Yeah, that's about right. The Tech 4 looks awsome even today.

  • this demo was run on an 8 core mac with 512 memory and an nvidia quadro card back in 07

  • it only used 1 core though

  • I am reading Masters of Doom - probably the top 5 entertaining page-turners in my life. I am enjoying it especially because I was Keen addict when it came out and I remember everything about what was going in my life during that era. Great memories to relive, through reading about the creators of this game. And being a programmer myself, love reading about his ability to focus and his passion to really own his skill and conquer that world.

  • Still relies heavily on texturing fill rate. A very primitive game engine.

  • john carmack rulz, he also won a competition for nasa with his armadillo aerospace.

  • it sounds like the next big thing since doom

  • <3 Carmack

  • Agreed. Carmack is one of the few uber-nerds that could get pretty technical and still give a well-rounded summary of what the content suggests.

I only wish my internal organizational skills matched his. Not to mention my paycheck.

  • wow, can i have the "bad" ps2 game that you're talking about ?

  • so you're admitting that this is as good as CGI cinematic scenes?

  • FURTHER MORE...

If you really and truly question if these guys are any good or not...

Google "Quake Engine" you will see a family tree of all engines and games based off of their work.

These guys are the einsteins of First Person Shooters.

They are the Jimi Hendrix of American game development.

Even if you don't like their games, you should atleast agree they have made gaming what it is today.

  • John Carmack is largely responsible for proving PCs as a viable gaming platform. It started with his engine that could smoothly scroll a 2D tile-based map on-screen; which had never been done on the PC before. They first tested it with a recreation of the entire first level of SMB2 (search YouTube for Dangerous Dave in Copyright Infringement). It was then used for their Commander Keen games. Then came Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake... He's been at the forefront of every leap in game engine tech.

  • Let's not forget the fact the original Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake games had different directions in terms of gameplay during the development. :p lol

  • @lupine73 Smooth scrolling of 2d maps is easy. I did it at the age of like 13 on my Commodore Amiga. You just use a data store of what blocks there are, add the new blocks off screen and remove the old ones that already went off screen. Then you smooth scroll them over by lowering the x variable of the graphics. I also did it for the Y axis for smooth scrolling in all directions. Cryengine kills all other engines for like years now.

  • @musichopper

    no you didn't.

  • @musichopper

Why don't you answer me you fat balding talentless manchild :3

    Oh thats right, I'm correct.

    U MAD?

  • @lupine73 I LOVE DOOM, QUAKE, WOLFENSTEIN 3D! THEY ARE ALL AWESOME GAMES! :D

  • @LgndryThndr they created the first person shooter genre.

  • @LgndryThndr true this. Not even just American, lots of devs from other countries use Ids stuff.

  • @LgndryThndr Yeah, but then came Epic with their Unreal Engine, and they dominated the market of engines ever since.

Id tech is going to have hard times battling this giant. (Crytech failed horribly) I really wish them much success (to both id and epic). Some of the last studios that keep cooking nothing but high quality stuff.

  • the engine is still too "plastic like"

    but, quake and doom rlz

  • You're watching it on a fucking projector.

And on youtube for god sakes..

  • That was the old engine jackass and even then when it was released it was highend.

please yourself, do some god damn research.

    subjective opinion is subjective.

  • This is coming from some one who likes Shovel ware like Plants vs zombies.

go play your bejewelled you god damn casual.

  • Comment removed

  • John Carmack is the fucking man... took him 10 days to do that?

Doom 4 is gonna own. Its coming to 360 and PS3, but will be written in Open GL for PC, which means open-source operating systems like Ubuntu will be able to run it without ANY problems. This is the beginning of the move-over from Vista, which is the best news I've heard yet. In an interview Carmack said he isn't interested in DirectX 10 at all -- which means it wont eat your mid-range setup at high settings.

    DOOM 4 FTW

  • If they get the gameplay balance right then no need for dx10 effects really.

Crysis anymore engadging or immersive using dx10 tech? Open to argument

  • Yes, I found dust dynamically Blowing through a dilapidated hut I was sheltering as shotgun blasts tore chunks off the wall above my head realistic, not to mention dodging from behind a fence, as a flaming jeep wreckage blurred into it, crushing an adjacent soldier and burning several more with volumetric flame effects...

  • He didn't say the whole thing took 10 days. He said they "got it together" in the last 10 days. The coding and modelling will have taken months but this demo level was just put together in that time.

  • Wow props to mac on this one i just hope it doesn't slow down my xbox 360 when i play modernwarfare 2 =}

  • it wont he said it stays on a max of 60 frames per second... and even more on a pc.

  • mortal kombat need s this. bad.

  • cry engine is overrated..

  • No its not. Believe it or not its actually dumbed down. Once everyone gets PC that can run it your gonna see some really good mods.

  • I'd have to agree there Weirundbreit, but being quite a fan of it, it's not overrated for nothing.. Try searching "Amazonian Rainforest Cryengine2". I don't think that there is any game that can beat that.

  • DUDE YOU CAN ZOOM TEXTURES you cant ZOOM TEXTURES IN FALL OUT!

  • ID é a good producing but the problem of its engine after doom2, is that it only work weel on a closed environment. I think open environment is much fun. Therefore in this case, i prefer CryEngine.

  • george3dmax i am not idiot,if you can't see in ID Tech 5 grafic looks like Fallout 3,and worst than crysis, that's your problems

  • you are completle Stupid,Wait several Times until Demo Version Of Rage releases then download demo then try then Reply to me

  • I wasn't troll.CryEngine 2 is better than id tech 5

  • no idiot

  • Do you even know anything about the crysis engine or tech 5?

  • guys game engine is wroten good so you wont see any low performance

  • What the hell are you arguing about. Killzone 2 isn't even the best looking game so far (although it's stunning, just tested it a moment ago), so using that as a some kind of benchmark is, at the best, Sony hype blindly swallowed. Crysis and GoW2 for example are both superior to Killzone 2.

  • ok sry,doom3 story rocks but when i look on the rage is hell better than doom3 but still quite good graphics doom3 owns

  • SOUL CUBE OMG ???!

  • This engine is impressice because of the ammount of things it can have on screen at once. And how big of textures it can handle.

    Read up before you troll.

  • At 1:38 that guy had the Soul Cube from Doom 3

  • he sure did

  • hopefully we'll get a wave of game developers to license this over the UE3 engine. every game using UE3 has been a buggy laggy piece of shit

  • yeah, thats true

  • Carmack is very intelligent: with computer science and mathematics. Amazing work he's accomplished. Respect for this person who dropped out of college. He's brilliant at his work. I admire him (even though I'm a atmospheric science major).

  • for pc only or playstation 4 or xbox 3

  • PC, PS3, and 360.

  • lol, werd

  • damn bro u got the ps4 hook me up.Lmao!

  • LOL!

Killzone's little ass 2x2 thumbnail textures? No.

  • If you'd played the game you wouldn't be saying that

  • I have. Sure everything looks good from a distance, but take some time to zoom into a wall...

    Low rez city.

  • You zoom into a WALL and then complain about how the textures look bad? WTF...

Do you go right up to a painting and look at it through a microscope? No, you observe it as a whole...just like you should with videogames. Its the best looking game to ever hit a console and easily rivals those on pc. Plus the gameplay is great, story not THAT good but a must buy none the less.

But yea, these graphics here are better than KZ2

  • Well when it is released, i think you will look at the walls in KZ2 and think it was on the ps2.

  • Lol Its been released for almost 2 weeks now dude. I have it and have finished it. And the graphics are NOTHING to make fun off. Also, no game on ps3 looks like ps2, except maybe the Godfather...

  • You suck Dude Have you ever Seen MegaTexture in this engine you can Zoom Texture Instead Of that game can run on any Pc Smooth,it will be optimized

  • I suck because Killzone 2 has good graphics and I recognize it? Don[t own a ps3 and can't play it? Then it is you who sucks. And what you're talking about is Procedural Rendering and I know all about it. WOW, zooming into textures. Have game developers really run out of game play ideas? Not saying it isn't a good idea, but there are more to games and graphics than textures..

  • Killzone 2 blows, it sucks so bad the dev team couldn't even oust an autoaim exploit in the game.

You know whats funny about you sonyfriends? Every year its, METAL GEAR WILL SAVE THE PS3 MICROSOFT IS FINISHED! WAIT, LITTLEBIGPLANET WILL! WAIT, GOD OF WAR WILL!

Your console is a wet match in a dark cave and your head is in the sand.

Tech 5 will revolutionize and make console differences obsolete. No longer will there be console wars as the games will be identicle on all consoles.

  • You're deluded. MGS4, Killzone 2, Uncharted, GT5, God of War 3, Final Fantasy 13, and more are all, and are going to be, A++ titles. And what about all the multi-plats like COD4, Fallout 3, GTA IV, etc? Are they also wet matches in dark caves? NO... You probably haven't even played killzone 2, I have and while it isnt the best game ever and has flaws, its still amazing.

  • Yes multiplatforms that suck when on the PS3, bad textures, shotty Anti aliasing not that PS3 had any AA to begine with.

And the console in itself is a wet match in a dark cave, also most of this is your opinion and opinions are subjective ; )

Also its not amazing, it doesn't add anything to the run of the mill shooter. It doesn't pioneer anything, it has nothing new to offer, its mediocre.

There are shooters that have scored poorly in comparison to KZ2 that have done far more. idiot

  • OH and by the way, Grand Theft Auto is a multiplatform game last I checked.

  • Yea gta iv is multplat... Just like cod4, fallout 3, etc. All good games that are on ps3 as well. Yet you continue to call it a wet match in a dark cave. Your opinion is subjective too, idiot..

  • Then why did you say it wasn't?

Oh wait, short attention span and no IQ I'm sorry I forgot I was talking to an illiterate and unintelligent fuck.

And the difference with comments and your opinion is that mine is backed up by FACTS.

The PS3 has no Anti aliasing, many of the multiplats are inferior due to its ass backwards cell and its texture quality is poor. Staring at PS3 graphics is like looking through smokey dark vaseline.

Because god forbid some one notice their jaggies. retard.

  • "And what about all the multi-plats like COD4, Fallout 3, GTA IV, etc?" I never said it wasn't....

Ok whatever you say man, the ps3 has no AA. Yep.

You do know that it is up to the developers to implement AA and everything else into their games using the ps3 hardware as best they can, right? Look at MGS4, perfect models with minimal jaggies, even very close up.

There's nothing factual about any of the shit you're writing. Its all opinionated and plain dumb.

  • thats because of edge blurring. And the only AA I've seen on a playstation game is Temporal which really isn't shit either.

I'd put up some screenshots, but unfortunately this site prevents it.

All you have to do though is pop in google images and weep.

Also its not a devs fault sony couldn't make it less ass backwards console. Atari Jaguar any one? 64 bits, but poor build prevented any games to be made to its degree of limitation.

  • Well the games graphics look pretty good to me. Ive got cod4 on ps3 and 360 and there is no difference at all. But of course its going to look and play better on a high end pc. I hardly notice jaggies on my gaming set up, but when they are there in some games (bioshock, fallout 3) it does look like shit.

And i think its safe to say that killzone, mgs4, and uncharted are amazing achievements considering the ps3s "limited" hardware

  • firstly

Many graphic based difference cannot be noticed when the resolution isn't stressed.

for example, say you have a large high definition television. Or in my case a HD monitor with the proper output and input.

then these things become noticeable. Though they don't really affect gameplay, the main and only gripe is that for the price, work and support put into a console it should atleast be some level better than the other.

  • Secondly

The fact that you actually admitted a degree of fault and pointed it out shows alot of maturity. Not the age variety, but the gaming variety. Because you actually opened your mouth and said.

" Hey this does suck ass and there is no excuse for it" shows that you won't be tied exclusively to a specific brand or company and its excuses.

With that I'd like to also say that Killzone, mgs4 and uncharted are very bleak and garden variety.

Might I suggest a game, SystemShock 2 PC.

  • I also play on an HD monitor. When i play ps3 on my 50inch in the lounge the jaggies stick out like a sore thumb. Which is why i dont game on it.

I still love kz2, mgs4, and uncharted (although after playing the latter once...BORING), but i can see why they aren't everyone's cup of tea.

Will try SystemShock 2 when I get my new PC

  • Don't have to, SS2 is almost a decade old.

If your pc is running vista or has a dual core you will have to troubleshoot.

  • Oh cool, yea looks like my kinda game.

    I'll check it out

    Cheers

  • Good on you for saying those things, I'm glad that you haven't been hacked apart by console fanboys =) You might want to take at Cryengine3. It's quite something.

  • Eh, Cryengine is a resource hog.

    You're comparing an F22 to an F14.

the Tech 5 is going to turn game development into fucking legos. and thats a good thing.

Its going to make the problems that plague multiplatform optimization obsolete.

When Tech 5 is finished any game you play on any console will be exactly the same to the degree of hardware.

Id software isn't just some guys who made doom.

    They invented full 3d fps.

If not for them we wouldn't have any of todays games.

  • P.S.

I'm waiting for a real response with something to back it up other than a cheap parlor trick by mincing my words.

  • Lol sorry i think you missunderstood. I said that when Rage comes out (iknow killzone 2 is out and it is amazing) but the point im trying to put across is that killzone 2's textures will look like what ps2 looks like now, when you see the MegaTexture's in rage. (I hope you didnt think i was that dumb :P)

  • Oh lol sorry. Yea I hear what you're saying :)

  • Lol, glad thats sorted :P

  • HA HA HA OH WOW,

If that wasn't such a heap of shit I'd have argued it!

  • Yeah but there's like 20 zillion walls.

You're only going to get so much, man.

  • True, but the initial argument was whether the textures were bad or not. Not whether it mattered or not. But you're right.

  • if Id Software hadn't come up with FPS someone else would anyway
