Just because someone isn't able how to read and write, doesn't necessarily have to mean he or she is inferior or uncivilized. And the English language is not even a basis of literacy. Nobody is putting anyone down here. Just try to look up the meaning of the word 'literate' in the dictionary...it just simply indicates a person who is able to read and write, regardles of what language s/he uses. This has nothing to do with one's culture, knowledge of the seas, etc.
