apparently, there were life boats that were not used and some lifeboats that were used were not filled to capacity. So many lives were unnecessarily lost.
@LightStijn google'' Titanic Facts True and Target '' and it says their were 20 lifeboats filled to capacity, but some of the limited lifeboats were lowered only 1/2 full, according to what i read.
@flargmuffin92 Well IMO, children and younger people must go first! Though you don't think that way, if it is only the 1/5 to survive it's better to be children and young people not only because of their age, but because they'll live to tell what happened for years ;)
no, according to the history books, Captain Smith said "Women and Children first", but the officers took it to mean "Women and children only", that is what made the difference...
@flargmuffin92 i know the people were stuiped and i felt so bad for the kids on the ship have to see there daddys died i know that there are dumb for just women and kids only oh and same kids mommys died because all of them were filled!!!
i heard that they makin a titanic ii in 2012 and its goin to voyage across the alantic i dont know if its true or not but thats what i heard i really think they shouldnt repeat history.
I think the two collapsible Engelhardt life boats that supposedly "floated off when the Titanic sank" may have been used by the captain and select crew members to row to the nearby Californian. Fun theory. Always thought from the statistics (like the ship was less than 50% full to capacity for passengers, and for a maiden voyage to boot), that this sinking might be insurance fraud or some other kind of foul play. There you have it. And remember, that's Dr. Crazy Nutjob to you.
@flargmuffin92 I am not buying this notion where men were crapped on here or acted especially heroically. They just seemed to act especially stupidly more than anything. Obviously a lot of the early lifeboats had plenty of room for men and the men turned it down because they didn't believe the Titanic would sink. Also, of the 1690 men on board the ship, a majority (885) were crew members, and since they had a greater survival rate than passenger men, I'm thinking they had better info.
I also read that they didn't fill the life boats because, at the time, nobody thought the Titanic was really going to sink and most preferred to stay on the big ship rather than load onto a little dingy in the middle of the night. By the time people realized what was going on, it was too late. Not sure more people would have been saved by waiting to launch a full boat every time as panic would prolly render the boats launched late useless as many might be capsized from overloading. Tragic.
I read that it was the Californian that was close by at the time of the sinking and had turned off the radio. Crew members on the Californian had even seen the emergency flares and apparently thought it was a celebration? I am kind of not buying this story, but it's possible.
I read today that the Carpathia has been found off the Coast of Ireland. She is 500 Feet Down. I read that the ship is relatively intact except for big holes in her side.
Can the Carpathia be Raised?
Carpathia is a piece of History. she also took part in an act of Mercy rescuing the Survivors of the Titanic Tragedy. Carpathia's builders and architects would be honored at her Resurrection. what a Museum she would be docked at the Titanic Museum in Ireland.
Apparently the Carpathia was much closer to the titanic when it started sinking then everyone thought and the carpathia turned their radio off at night and went too sleep if they had kept it on they could have rescued alot more people as it was sinking :/
Apparently the Carpathia was much closer to the titanic when it started sinking then everyone thought and the carpathia turned their radio off at night and went too sleep if they had kept it on they could have rescued alot more people as it was sinking :/
@Roadracer987654321 Man how many ships cant be raised.Britannic,Titanics sister which is {besides from the bow}intact and its here in my country,Greece, just 100 meters bellow surface less than half of the ships length.Carpathia ass you said.
The thing is that they cant find a good way to raise them, and no one is willing to spent money to raise them. For titanic it can be raised in one piece ever!Neither in piece,it will be 1000 piecesof 10 tons each!!!!!!!!Sad but true!!!!!!!!
I'm not trying to be clever, but if I was the captain or a member of the control crew I would not only have 'all-stopped' the engines after hitting the icebergs , I would've then reversed the ship back to as near as possible to the icebergs. That way more people would have survived - there would be a good chance that people could clamber on top of them instead of freezing to death in the freezing water.
The whole women and children thing was a mistake, really. He didn't mean it that way.. I think it was more women and children had top prioity, but the officer that heard that, probably misunderstood, and said woman and children only.
Actually they failed to say "first" they left out "first" part and made it sound like Women and Children "only" which was why alot of men died and the lifeboats were half empty.
@Matlike1 alot of men did die but not as many as people think. if u read or listen to accounts of survivors alot of men got on the boats sometimes more than women. and the fact that more first class men lived than 3rd class women and children disgusts me
@Poparatiz Yes, it really pisses me off that deficiencies in the evacuation meant a number of lifeboats weren't loaded to full capacity. So they didn't even save as many passengers as they could have, even with the inadequate number of lifeboats.
This film was actually taken after all of the survivors had left the Carpathia. The press was then allowed on to film. However, the first part is accurate, and does contain survivors of the Titanic, before the Carpathia docked.
the wireless operator on the Californain didn't rewind ...(i forget the name of it right now)...didn't rewind a certin box that allowed other wireless messages to come through
The californian from what is said could see the flares that were given off from titanic, but ignored the fact that a ship may have been in danger because it must have been something small and were in icy water so it would have been dangerous to come to that rescue, which is terrible upsetting to believe :( well i think, when the californian could have saved them
Thats incorrect. Titanic was as we all heard that ship that "god himself cannot sink." Now as im sure we are all aware, they didnt put enough life boats on the ship so they could have more deck room but the story with the flares is that the ship was dubbed "unsinkable" - the ship never had the correct color of flares (which i believe is red) to signal that they were indistress so when they shot up blue/white flares, any other ship watching would have never known that they were in trouble.
Well you see if the went straight into the ice burg then only 2 or 3 compartments would have flooded and it could still float and make it to new york.
They would still have to abandon ship, or most passengers, because if they started moving again, more water would flow onto the ship, so they would have to get rid of as much weight as possible.
It's also been found out if Murdoch hadn't of reversed the engines, and turned hard-to-starboard it would of missed.
can i ask how you know this, without sounding rude ? because it is very unlikely that eventhough she was classed as being 'unsinkable' i think it would be wrong to not have put all the correct flares onboard. Also ongoers such as the californian probobly would have noticed and flares shouldnt be used for a warning and a celebration, seems all too farfetch for me to believe.
Its cool. I didnt think your question was rude at all. U just want to know how I know that. After James Camerons version of Titanic came out and everyone went into Titanic/Leo mania, there were countless documentaries on tv and in magazines and such and I read it in one of those. Im sure you can do some research and find it on the web for yourself. Also, the thought of it is not that crazy. Wouldnt you consider it more "wrong" with just the fact that the lifeboats couldnt save more than half?
I wouldnt exactly say that I find that to be more unbelievable than to build a ship and have it hold lifeboats that cant even carry everyone but also keep in mind that back in that time, the laws were different. It wasnt mandatory for a ship to have those things like it would be today. Also, passengers had a hard time believing that the ship was actually sinking so it was tough to get them from out of there warm rooms and into the boats.
True everything just seems to fit into perfect place, which made it a true disaster. you hear loads of things, no binoculars , the californian ignored them, if it hit head on it would have got to halifax, people didnt believe it. i just wish i had been there and saw with my own eyes what happened.
The water was soo cold that night that the average time that a normal sized human (adult) could survive in that water was about 7 minutes. Put it this way. Stick your hand in a cooler thats filled with ice and water. I dont think you can keep your hand in there for more than 2 minutes. Your hand will hurt so bad within the first 30 seconds. Now imagine your whole body feeling that way and you cant do a thing about it. No, I dont believe you would really wanna be there. Be glad too.
History records apparently show that the Titanic Marconi operators had annoyed the Clafornian when they were trying to warn Titanic of the ice they were surrounded by. Unfortunately, it not only denies it, but makes others do the same, thus letting a guilty man have nothing but himself to tell him what he did was wrong.
