I think there was a bit too much of the split-screen effect. Split screen is like zoom, handheld, oblique, etc--cinematically potent, but overuse them at your peril.

And I'd advise you to be careful about getting overconfident about all the praise; they love your concept because it's in line with their beliefs. Make a broader film with concerning a less sensitive topic if you really want fairer feedback on your writing, directing, and cinematography.
