These are all very astute observations - the ones I am reading, not mine. I think of the poetry of Carl Sandburg and Robert Levine. I wish I were in college and could write a paper about this kind of poetry. Listen to it w. "America" he did w. Garfunkel: "Cathy I'm lost ... I'm empty and aching and I don't know why." The harsh reality of of Dylan's Rolling Stone.Think Kerouac and Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Commentators: you're on a quest. Good luck.
Then you have poor taste in music my friend. The 80s had a lot of bad stuff like very decade does but the 80s more than decades preceding it also had some of the greatest stuff coming out. Michael Jackson's and Madonna's biggest hits for example came out in the 80s. There's Queen, Guns n Roses, Metellica, U2, The Police, Phil Collins etc. My favourite is Steve Winwood, he has the best album of 1986 with Back In The High Life.
All those acts you mentioned sucked... except Queen and the Police... but Queen was only okay for a queer band... and the Police's albums were mostly filler w/ their hit singles the only reason they're remembered.
Metallica? Band members would quit just to get away from those jerk offs. You can't say someone has bad taste in music then profess MJ, Madonna as epic. G&R was just inharmonious noise and garbage lyric from a racist homophone.
Thanks for enlightening us with your severe lack of musical knowledge. In your rushed attempt in trying to intelligent, you overlooked to tear down U2 with your pitiful wit. However, I am sure you are able to come up with something so you can drag them down too, and which is enough bullshit to draw accolades from your 15yr old peers.
@johnny2o2o Musical Wasteland? Clapton "Journeyman", Dire Straits "Brothers In Arms", Genesis "Invisible Touch", Paul Simon "Graceland" - four awesome albums, need I say any more?
In studying music and success, I've seen it so many times where their a seminal album or series of albums that just hit it right, high and hard. Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints see Simon just hitting high and hard, on all cylinders. Amazing work. My favorites, certainly.
This album came out when I was 13 & its definately one of those 'Desert Island' picks, one of those albums you cannot go without. While the whole world seemed to be going crazy over Bon Jovi's 'Slippery When Wet', I was diving into this masterpiece called "Graceland".
Me and my parents never shared much in the way of music tastes, but my mom used to always play this song when I was a kid, and now it's become one of my favorite songs. Such beautiful lyrics!
Notice the amazing harmony vocals added by Phil and Don Everly right after 2:00 - just one more component of this incredible Paul Simon work. Excellent post, thanks very much!
@jtr4ever2 Everybody see's your blown apart ...........boom - Salt and pepper the lyric. Two beautiful lines even on there own !!! Put together , I rest my case XX
@jtr4ever2 that's the line I want to hear most. he has so many of those in his songs. ever hear the line in "further to fly' , "the open palm of desire, wants everything, want's everything" that's another sublime one.
@jtr4ever2 I so agree with you, this is my favourite line of this sublime album and definately in my top 10 favourite lyrics ever written by anyone.
I recently watched a great documentary about this album again. It shows what a genius musician this man is; how he listens to music, at such a higher level than most of us will ever be able to. Totally amazing.

@dsdan83 Simon, Jackson, Madonna,Queen - and that's it. The others wrote and sang. Those four spoke through music.

They wrote beautiful songs and sang beautiful songs. The Joshua Tree for example is a magnificent album and I am not even such a huge U2 fan.

@AvonStCyr I don't dispute any of that list, but I would add Knopfler, Rea & Clapton.
