Not at all. Using the Standard Gamecube controller setup, set the L button attack and leave evrything else like it is. Hold down the L button, it helps to jump first, then walk to the Left and tap the C-stick diagonally upward to the right. To Auto Pivot to the Right do the opposite.

Actually there is a much simpler way to do this. Simply Jump cancel into counter, Like you would Jump cancel grab in Melee.
