on a blackberry, it says its an SMS text. is that the same thing as a regular text?

on my BB when i put compose sms txt and i type wat i want to send and send it a clock apears beside it and after a while it tunrns into a red X but wen i put compose mms it sends fine but wen recipient gets it the brackround is all white like a picture msg please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
