It was Phil's spoken introduction this this song that attracted Jeff Wayne & lead him into choosing Phil to play Parson Nathaniel in his adaptation of War of the Worlds.
In my Top 3 of Thin Lizzy songs. I remember playing the same section of my vinyl record back in the day trying to learn this solo. Still blows me away with its feel...
@DetroitSquirreL yeah the key it's in and some of the changes. the instrumental version reminds me of it more. not sure which came first i assume thin lizzy but both songs are good
Hunters and Collecters' Holy Grail song is another rip off of this classic Lizzy tune. Man it makes me angry how unappreciated Thin Lizzy are. Best band ever.
The vulture sits on top of the big top circus arena, He's seen the show before knows someone's going to fall. Just near the part where the beautiful dancing tightrope ballerina forgets the safety net isn't there at all...down he swoops with claws drawn to take her...so savage is she mauled? Oh my God, is there no one who can save her? In steps the fox to thunderous applause.
This is mere perfection...RIP Phil Lynott God took one of the best!!
I taught this song in my English class many moons ago, explaining how Lynott turned language into another music instrument. Said one kid, "Just like rap." The kid had a point.
@ProfessorZaroff I've often thought Phil was one of the first rappers. Right from the earliest Thin Lizzy songs he was using words as much for their rhythm as their meaning, and bending the melody to fit them in.
This song is fantastic. This album is so good, so really, really good. It goes without saying that Phil Lynott is one of rock and roll's true geniuses. A rock soul with a poet's voice. A gem, a great groove with a little Jameson, winter-dark evening, loudness on. In steps the Fox to thunderous applause. O yes indeed; and forever.
I know Lizzy doesn't get enough credit as a Rock band, but how about Scott Freakin' Gorham, another just amazing solo, that at first one thinks ya it could be this and it could be that and then just try to play that, it's got it all, licks, feeling, direction, statement, this guy has played some of the coolest solos ever!
@PSOOPE ... an amazing player - it is tight to the rhythm yet still full of freedom and feel - one of the great lead guitarists... if we still had Phil and Lizzy today Scott would be properly lauded for his skills by one and all - in my book one of the best and certainly my favourite player of all time - I even got him which was great because at least I can say I met a hero of my youth.
@whitbyjet65 Yea and whats your point? Phil considered himself more irish than brazilian as he was reared in dublin since he was a baby, plus he never knew his father and who gives a fuck where he or anyone else was born? That means fuck all, its about what's in your blood and your heart, going back generations so don't start with this 'he's born in england so he's one of us' sorry but to quote Philo himself 'I'd rather be dead than considered English' think that puts the debate to bed
you are correct to let you know many bands or artistic groups were influinced by thin lizzy and if you do your research you will find other groups admited doing so.
Imagine waking up one morning and IMAGINING that you are Frankie !
Thanks for the great memories PHIL
I will always remember seeing you live in the 'arc' the arcadia ballroom - yes it was way back - but then we had to get a train from Cobh all the way to Cork (avoid trouble on the way up to Cork !! ha ha) at the 'lizzy concert' wowo it was what they would now call 'cool'.:)
My dear old brother who bought the tickets well he died many many moons ago and his passing saddened a lot of people.
Always my favorite from the group. I still have this original album in perfect shape. This had some airplay in 76 I recall, but over the years it dissapeared from radio.

OMG Tennant1980, Ive seen limehouse lizzy 5 times 2 n vere almost as good as da real lizzy, vo tim read will neva eva beet scott goreham but vey hav a real lizzy vibe
this is a prime example of the kind of range the boys had..........we all know they could rock the house down........but they also had plenty of beautiful ballads in their arsanel. oh how i long for those good ole days again......we so miss ya Phillip.
Holy crap, BucksStudent, you're right! I'd never heard Hit Me With Your Best Shot before, so I listened to it on here, and it sounds VERY similar. Nice catch!
This song is a masterpiece. Scott Gorham should have been given a special Grammy for his solo, which is one of the best in rock history (and, tragically, one of the least known).
Er, it's a chord progression which is different than a riff. My guess is that Phil wrote the outline as a simple repeating bass part (E,A,C#,B) and Brian Robertson (because he knew theory) wrote the chord progression and its substitutions...who gives a fuck about that though. I was referencing the solo in this song, which is immaculate in both its composition and performance. Scott's tone and his phrasing in this songs solo (as well as in Freedom Song) are on a different level.
No, Lynott did not know theory. It's common knowledge that Phil was taught the basics of playing bass guitar by Brush Shiels, and also that he was largely self-taught. Phil played it by ear, same as Scott did. Robbo was a classically trained piano player who brought theory to the band (same as Gary Moore and Darren Wharton did later). Most of Thin Lizzy's songs during the Robbo era were written by Phil and Robbo. See.....you learn something new everyday..... : 0
I wouldn't call this a conservatoire piece, so I honestly don't see what classical theory has to do with this. And as a matter of fact you'll always need basic musical theory if u want to use chords
Exactly, you've just made my point. Since Brian knew theory and Phil and Scott did not, I'd have to believe that Brian Robertson was largely responsible for writing the chord progressions in most of Thin Lizzy's songs from his era, including The Boys Are Back In Town and Cowboy Song. Of course, I'm just speculating as to how Thin Lizzy got it done..... The bottom line is they did get it done....time and time again with different line ups.
