I'd like to know what these troops are doing there since 2001. First they said they had to get rid of terrorist training camps: surely in 11 years they have achieved that. Then it was to capture Osama Bin Laden, & now he's dead... so why are they still there then? There's a massive economic crisis: how much is costing Western countries to keep there all these troops (plus engineers, medics, nurses, cooks, journalists, etc..)? They're getting slaughtered as well, so what's the point?

Pakis are training and sending Taliban into Afghanistan and the coalition cant even go into Pakistan's tribal areas to take out the terror camps. So, as long as 180 million people of Pakistan exist there will be an unlimited supply of disposable mujahiddin for the Pakis to use as proxy against the coalition, especially the Pashtuns of Pakistan's side of the tribal areas who are the foot soldiers and cheap cannon fodder to fight and die against the coalition forces.
In this sense it is futile for the US just to be fighting in Afghanistan. As long as Pakistan is the source of all terrorists pouring into Afghanistan, US will just be doing a policing job in Afghanistan and not actually confronting the source of the problem.
The source of the problem lies in the Pakistan and the treacherous Pakistani military that takes US money and uses that very money to train the Talib and kill US and British troops. @MuminahG Well, I'm sure its more complicated than that cuz it takes money and politics to fight a war. Both have strong doctrines - Taliban for Allah and US for American style of "freedom". Each is fighting to retain his way of life. It's a contest of the strongest will. But the war is more than just Taliban vs. US. It's a very complex situation with many different stakeholders cuz of the many tribes and countries participating with different interests.

@JLaw012 There was a recent NY Times report that Afghan. has $1trillion in natural resources. The whole central Asia region is rich in nat. resources. The world's oil & mining companies are just waiting to go in there.
Actually those 62 countries are allies of the US meaning trade partners. Eventhough many of their citizens are anti-war, many govts sent their support cuz US is a major business partner.
"Freedom" actually means US "way of life" - consumerism, decadence, growth, etc.

Atlantic Council - December 18, 2009 Iraq awards contracts to countries to extract their oil, it is THEIR choice of who wins the contracts not ours. The war in Afghanistan was a just war there is zero doubt about that, however if we are going to fight a war i want them to do it right (Brits included).
