GotY shouldn't exist, I've seen "Game of the Year edition" for so many games this year is fucking annoying. 4 out of 5 of those games come with absolutely nothing new/extra then the regular version, so your just paying extra because they slapped a GotY sticker on it.

The games that do come with something extra, like a free add-on or expansion, is just a giant "fuck you" to everyone who already. bought the game

@SloeElvis 2 of those games you mentioned aren't good enough to be GOTY. Infamous was good but i wouldnt say GOTY and Demon Souls i havent tried. New Super Mario Bros Wii is great though so its being on this list is expected.

You want to discuss the technical quality and fun factor of a game like Modern Warfare 2 and Killzone 2 and compare them to Super Mario? C'mon Forza 3?? There is NO discussion. Super Mario is fun, but I bet, I can BET WHATEVER YOU WANT not even Nintendo made it expecting it to be nominated for Game of the Year. They don't care if their game is good, they just want it to be fun and family friendly, which will make it sell like water. There's no arguing here.

You didn't mention MW2 (I have it I KNOW how fun it is) and Killzone is mad IMO definitely not as good as MW2. Forza, well IMO no racing game should EVER be GOTY. No company expects games to be GOTY they hope they can acheive that but no company does it just for that sole factor. The amount of fun a game like NSMBWii provides makes it a HIGHLY worthy contender for GOTY.

If you haven't tried Demon's Souls, how do you know it's not GotY? And yes, a company does expect a game to be GotY. This game is for casual gamers and didn't make very high bets, it just played it safe so it could sell well. Uncharted 2 for example, on the other hand, was a game with a 20 million dollar budget. Incredibly deep multi and singleplayer, attention to detail that is simply UNRIVALED. And your opinion doesn't really matter... GotY is an award for outstanding game quality = Forza 3.

My opinion is just as valid as yours which in actuality is worth nothing following your logic. GOTY is the opinion of a couple of gaming journalists and gaming websites I never said Demon Souls wasn't GOTY if you read correctly. I clearly stated I never played it and left it at that not making any assumptions on quality. Mario is NOT for casuals its for EVERYONE theres a BIG difference. And once again companies dont expect GOTY they expect/hope for big sales another major difference. .

A game that offers so much as Forza 3, with so many options in customization, cars, tracks, online play, car sharing, graphics, track modes, and fun factor is a definite nominee.

Today, games are art. You can't (or at least shouldn't) nominate a game for GotY just because it's fun. There's a number of factors: Fun, Presentation

Graphics, story, etc. A game should be GotY only when it succeeds tremendously in all these factors. If a video gaming website only nominates for GotY based on their opinion, no one should listen to them, because their "opinion" is just as good as ours. An opinion is worth NOTHING. They can say a game is good based on their opinion, then you go out and buy it, but as it turns out, it wasn't good for you. So their opinion didn't help.

Their job is to analyze the many aspects of a game

and based on how well all of those aspects were executed and delivered to the public, they nominate the GotY winners. They know more about games' quality than us, that's why we listen to them when they review a game. At least I do. They always explain the game's quality and what it has to offer. If their opinion mattered, they'd just say in every review: "I like this game".

But a good website like IGN, always says "I like this game, but it's not for everyone".

Its STILL an opinion which is exactly why there is no unanimous GOTY winner throughout all publications. Alot of them can agree but very rarely will EVERY outlet pick the same GOTY.

I know. But a GotY award, like this one, which is purely based on opinion, is worth absolutely nothing. Destructoid actually said DAMNATION is better than Assassin's Creed 2... And anyone with a brain knows that's not true. Even score aggregator websites like Metacritic rarely ever consider the score that Destrucoid gives because it rarely ever isn't heavily based on opinion. So Metacritic and Gamerankings hardly ever count their scores, because... They're not worth anything.

Just because they have a differing opinion doesn't make it any less valid than say 1up's or Gametrailers. ALL reviews are based on opinion there is no universal criteria that determines what score a game will get. Score aggregator websites like metacritic and gamerankings are pathetic because as long as your review has a score attached to it you will be counted no matter the legitimacy or credibility of the website.

You know the reviewer at Gametrailers publicly said he didn't like Crysis, but still gave it a very high score, because it's undeniably a fantastic game. It's not like that in Dtoid. That's why their opinion is less valid. MUCH less valid.
