@Johnlindsey289 Because he was squeezed so hard that he was loosing circulation to his head and turning so "red like a beet". Squeeze one of your fingers really hard at the tip and hold it and see how red it gets.

They seriously need to make a Popeye the Sailor movie (modern one). But one where it's true to the characters, not horribly inaccurate like most movies made these days based off old shows.

I've read this cartoon took two years to animate, and it shows. The backgrounds are lush and beautiful, and there's a lot of attention to detail. Popeye taunting Bluto by popping up everywhere was used a year earlier in "Beware of Barancle Bill".
