Playing devil's advocate and approaching this from the opposite end of the spectrum, what if concealed single round derringers were treated more lightly under the law, would a private citizen be more likely to be armed and able to intercede in mass killings? I could live with a 12 round limitation on pistol magazines and a 16-20 round limitation on rifle magazines.

Although limiting the magazine capacity of a weapon generally sounds like a good idea there are problems. On a pistol when the magazine hold more than about 12 rounds it protrudes from the gun, is obtrusive and affects the balance of the weapon, so minor limitations are something I would comply with regardless. The government which suffers from chronic incompetence would take a good idea too for and have us all with 6 round magazines that defeat the purpose of having a semi auto in the 1st place

i cant say it enough limit the mags to 10 rounds and he would have just brought 3 10 rounders. it takes a second to change a mag so whether it was 3 10 round magazines or 1 30 round magazine the same amount of people would have died.

Perhaps the reason why extended magazines exist is because the American civilians need to be able to have at least something close to the capacity that the military has. Civilians should have the ability to at least believe they can defend themselves from an out of control government. With the technological advances over the years the military has access to weapons that are so advanced that most people would think it was science fiction even if they saw the weapons in use.
