ALSO, this move was not developed by Bruce Lee and isn't an exclusive JKD technique. It's something he learned and taught but was never described as a move made for JKD. It's a Kung Fu technique. Why did you insist on throwing around Bruce Lee's name? Idiot.
Wait, but when your hand absorbs the punch wouldn't it move towards your face? If your hand is right in front of your face you're gonna get hit anyways except it's with your own hand??
That's wrong. You parry by slipping your hand out and pushing with the palm, which in turn moves his hand in the direction of your palm. From there you can do what you want. You dont create a wall with your hand to take the punch.
Its a wing chun thing not jeet kune do. Bruce took alot of wing chun and updated it to fit jeet kune do, but in reality it's just wing chun. Your right (rtbaer06) this is an old chinese method. Watch ip man2 and you will see this alot
hmm... I don't like it. From what i've seen from Tim Tackett. You would stike first then parry. either reading the opponents emotional or natural tendencies. this is a good technique though. he talks about JKD evolving but this is an old chinese method
Jeet Kune Do, the "styleless style". Bruce Lee's invention to break away from standard styles and art's. Like Bruce said, "...One person made a doctrine on fighting, then other person, then it became the gospel truth..." He wanted to break away from that. And now Jeet Kune Do, even before Bruce died, became a standard martial art with Bruce's doctrines becoming "The gospel truth" on how to fight. It's the same with everything else: BJJ, Karate, JKD, TKD, Boxing. All the same.
haha ive always thought if u wanted to knock a guy out u ounch him straight through his jaw or punch his tempple (i have no clue how to spell temple)...
u mug what r u talking about his punch would hit your hand and would smack your head u cant generate enough stoping power in that short space also u cant meet power with power this guy dont no what he is trying to explain he made it up as he went through
that block is NOT going to stop nothing if you put your hand if front of the punch and your face is behind your hand you are going to get hit 1:36 dont do that hahahahhahah
No I do not know much about Jeet Kune Do techniques, however I am familiar with the palm catch, I agree with the fact that you'd probly do not want to catch the punch a full extension, breaking your hand is probly a lot better than getting in the face. Having said that, catching a strike is like catching a baseball, you want to catch it in the pocket of your hand, your palm should be making contact with fingers of the fist, and then allowing your fingers to wrap around the rest of the hand.
Haha, this is hilarious inaccurate as a JKD / Wing Chun concept. First of all this dude is wearing a Gi, which indicates a karate background. Why would open-palm block a straight punch at its full extension? You're asking to get your hand broken and the force required to block like that is way too much. A simple wing-arm style deflect & counter is much more practical in the situation. He can't even pronounce Jeet Kune Do correctly each time.
Blocking and striking at the same time is Wing chun in which Bruce incorporated into Jeet Kune Do. If you leaned back, that straight punch would be less affective.
I think blocking an attack is very overrated for self-defense. Footwork is a much better solution, if i stand there and punch you, you are not gonna block if you're not ready.
During a threatening confrontation, you want to get in and close, and deliver the first punch, then get the hell out of there as fast as possible. Technique doesn't matter, aslong as it's faster and powerful. Technique only comes in if a fight actually starts. But street fights only last anywhere from 1-30 seconds tops.
Well, all that I can say in honesty is that we could all do that if we knew what the attack was and where the attack was coming from! I have a great pal whom I "play with,(Aikido) if I tell him my intentions he gets me, if I don't I always get him, Always fun of course!
I dislike keyboard warriors as well, obviously there are multiple ways to defend against an attack. This is just one, where he would actually be able to throw a full powered punch while taking minimal damage. If you reach out for a parry, the guy isn't close enough for an instant counter with full power. The technique shown here may not be very effective against someone much larger than you though.
I shouldn't have come off so spiteful in my previous comment, it only adds to the hate. I just despise all the (mostly ignorant) whining so many video comments have from those claiming expertship behind a keyboard.
I apologize for my insult.
What I should've typed is, if you turn around and see a punch coming with your hands up, it's quick and simple to try and meet the opponents hand with your own to try and parry it or slow it down, giving you time to evade or counter or whatever you wish.
Look at the keyboard warriors showing off their ignorant wisdom.
The point of a block is protecting yourself when you can't evade. It's infinitely better to get your backhand slammed into your face as opposed to the other guy's knuckles. If you see the hit coming, evade. If you don't, block and, as is the point of the video, counter at the same time. Unless you have trees for arms, you're not gonna stop the hit, just protect your body the best you can with your guard while striking back.
@TheDudecof hmm... lets see, im really close to graduating high school and you still have years left until you graduate, im pretty sure im smarter then you are, so if anybody here is a dumb ass, its you.
@TheDudecof hmmm... who should i believe more, an older and more mature guy who seems to know what hes doing or some stupid 12 year old kid who acts like a stupid 12 year old kid.... wow that's really hard to decide (sarcasm).

this is real, but it only works against experienced sport fighters. sport fighters stop their punch after some contact, so you're tricking them into not giving you their full punch.
a random (strong) opponent from the streets would have just punched him with his own hand
@trentinium it is true actually. This guy is a poor instructor, that's why it looks like a ridiculous idea. The one time he does it naturally you can see that he actually knows how to use it. You actually DO reach out a bit and gradually slow down the hand of the opponent, hoping he gives up before reaching your face.
There are much better ways to avoid or deflect an attack, but you may still see it used in championships, because of the sheltered nature of many karate schools
That was great except how do I know if his fist will make contact? How do I know how far I should move my head and in what direction? What if he's faster than me? What if my strikes on his body doesn't hurt him because he's stronger than me? My instructor says that for every move, you need to practice it 500 times.
they have different styles of blocking and tbh i got into a fight and i did use this... well the punch still hurt so i'll just keep this short and simple... this SUCKS! there are better ways to defend yourself and counter attack a straight punch without actually taking the hit!
ok, if i step into a fight with a guy that can throw 500kg of a punch at 80km/h means i should BLOCK his punch??? LOL!
i've been in a few fights (legal, kickboxing, not street fights) with some ppl that are begginners and cant even hit for a KO. i soon realized i cant block even that kind of jab. a weak one. then, once you get hit for a KO with a stronger jab, you will NEVER try to block someones flying fist again. learn how to parry and slip punches. screw this vid.
there are two reason this can be success 1. the other guys hand gotta be shorter than your hand @_@ 2 He must be weaker than you. if there are none of these reason in it you can barely move your other hand or major lose ^_^
actually ynoe sth.. its gt to do with you... how you execute the move.. if youve been in a tounramnet fight or training for such youll realize that youre never gna be fast enough to fully doge or block a punch.. by just putting your hand infrnnt o f your face and absorbing the punch you actually have a lot of options.. like for example did you know if the guy threw you a hook youd still be blocking with your hand covering your face.. youre just gna absorb teh hit and itll feel different..
I'm sorry, with all due respect. If I notice someone has their hands that close to their face, I punch their hand into their face. I like to hold my hands in a Muay Thai manner in order to have more time to block. Meaning hands forward. Even if i miss the initial parry, I still have time to make contact. You should check my very primitive and awkward videos at Changtzu63. :) I'm no Martial Artist. I'm just a fighter.
RE: 1st in last out comment. . . . I do not spar for fun or recreation. I have been sucker-punched twice, and since the last time I have been determined to strike an attacker before he get his fist or weapon "loaded". I don't believe in killing except as a last resort (multiple attackers).
@ beefechunkybee to practice do slow counter block so u can i practice Istunka Somali martial art predates back in the early time to learn first do slow counter blocking then u learn practice make everything easy so just practice and go to martial art classes it will be easy for u then good luck

there are two reason this can be success 1. the other guys hand gotta be shorter than your hand @_@ 2 He must be weaker than you. if there are none of these reason in it you can barely move your other hand or major lose ^_^

actually ynoe sth.. its gt to do with you... how you execute the move.. if youve been in a tounramnet fight or training for such youll realize that youre never gna be fast enough to fully doge or block a punch.. by just putting your hand infrnnt o f your face and absorbing the punch you actually have a lot of options.. like for example did you know if the guy threw you a hook youd still be blocking with your hand covering your face.. youre just gna absorb teh hit and itll feel different..
