  • best performance of this song I've ever heard

  • Dude plays the piano, but where did the strings come from?

  • OMG Marian the librarian!

  • what a voice

  • Shirley Jones is the perfect Rodgers and Hammerstein ingenue. This is wonderful.

  • red flags of depression....

  • I love Shirley, eve if she's a Republican - lol.

  • This is probably close to what Rogers and Hammerstein intended. I don't recall if she did the Broadway version of State Fair. Most of the versions I heard of this were Jazz versions so it was nice to hear it originally and with the intro. I never cared for Danny Thomas or Make Room for Daddy. He was kind of scary because he was always yelling all the time. Yikes! What a nice piece of film here. Thanks for the post.

  • She makes me think of snow white or sleeping bueaty disney version

  • Shirley Jones had a great voice. She was also excellent as Miss Marian in 'The Music Man'.

  • Yep,she was some babe!

  • she is beautiful and talented but jeanne crain is better

  • @melaniehoover Jeanne Crain didn't sing it, her's was dubbed

    Shirley 1 Jeanne 0

  • this is amazing.

  • why doesn't Maggie whiting's 1945 version ever show up on "youtube world"? that was the definitive version, in my book. shirley sure had looks and talent though.

  • love her expresion 0:38

  • She's one of my favorite singer!!! I like her in the movie Oklahoma!!!

  • In the Orginal State Fair, the girl who plays this character had to have someone else sing her songs...I wonder why they just didn't ask Shirley, she is wonderful!

  • @katerbuggz The movie State Fair came out in 1945. At that time, Shirley would have been 11 years old. But you are right about one thing, she would have been great playing that role.

  • happy song

  • She sings so wonderful!! The theme song from the movie State Fair.

  • love it i know this song by heart

  • she's so beautiful it's unbelievable! and her voice is so lovely it makes you want to cry. if only there was talent like this in the charts nowadays.

  • Why is Lauritz Melchior (the great opera star) playing the piano for her?!

  • @dallyx66 He played her father in the episode.

  • im thinking of doing this song for a musical audition, and shirley jone's voice has almost won me over completely!

  • A very nice artist and performance! And I wouldn't be surprised if Roger Whittaker was inspired by this song when he wrote "The last farewell...":-)

  • What a Doll!

  • I might be getting old; showing my age, and a sucker for nostalgia. but damn if this stuff doesn't bring a tear to my eye.

  • @rickcee Don't worry. I'm teary-eyed, and I'm only fifteen. This is such a beautiful song, and I absolutely adore Shirley Jones.

  • Arr lovely! Danny Thomas Show was good too.

  • i love her voice! i also love this song

  • i first knew of shirley jones from david cassidy show, then oaklahoma, she is fantastic.

  • I would have married her b4 that song ended! Beautiful woman and human being!

  • Magical and wonderful

  • Great acting and singing

  • Shirley is the most beautiful woman who ever lived!

    XXXOOO

  • She's so amazing =)

  • I'm singing this in a revue!

I love shirley jones, but I didn't know she sang this! What a role model!

  • Wow. What a showcase for Shirl's talent!!! Bravo for posting!!!

  • I'm not going to lie, I've only just discoverd Shirley Jones. Her voice is breath-taking. I think I'm just simply in love with her. <3

  • i am so in love with shirley jones <3

  • Awesome. I'm doing this in voice lessons it's really nice.

  • i'm singing this song with my vocal coach too!! it's beautiful.

  • Haha, so am I XD

  • beautiful!

  • can anyone post dick haymes version?.one of the greatest vocal performances in popular music history.

  • what kind of piano is that?

  • What a truly nice voice she had ~ no wonder she was featured in some of the most popular Musicals on the silver screen....I think she was wasted on TV shows such as

PARTRIDGE FAMILY [cute though it was].

  • This is one of my favourite musical songs and Shirley's version is perfect. She was so beautiful here.

  • tout à fait géniale!

  • One word: BEAUTIFUL!

  • She is so beautiful!!I can't believe her voice! The prettiest one I've ever heard!

I LOVE hiw she say "pretending that I'm wonderful, and knowing I'm a dope."

with a pretty smile at the end!

  • Umm...I meant how,hehe.

  • Shirley's not a bore, she's just 74. Happy Birthday. 3-31-08.

  • Lovely.

  • I love Shirley Jones! I'm a huge Oklahoma fan because of her and Gordon Macrea.

  • She sure was pretty.

  • "Our State Fair..is a great state fair! Don't miss it...don't miss it! (Don't even come late...)

This is the best version of the song. Anne Margarette did a version and hers was good but I think Shirley Jones was a Mezza Suprano...Anne Margaret...NOT!

  • when I was 5 years old watching her in The Music Man, I thought I'd die, I was so much in love with her. Ronnie Howard was so lucky to be in that movie with her. --->Fast forward to 2007, saw her in solo Concert in Waltham MA at the high school. Terrific show, she is very tiny I got to be close up to Shirley. I also had a crush on her step-son David Cassidy, also her other sons.

  • nice voice for that time period, i bet she was super popular (i'm a garland fan myself hee hee)

  • One of the most beautiful woman ever to walk this earth, and a beautiful voice to match.

  • isnt she coming out with a christmas cd?

  • 0o0oo0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o0

  • Man I cant keep listening to it. I know all the lyrics after hearing it for the 1st time yesterday. WOW it REALLY stuck in my head!! xD =D thanx!

  • I loved her, i love this song, i just love it all!!! Gorgeous!

  • Shirley came and sang here in Austin, Texas a few months ago. She gave a wonderful performance and was very gracious and beautiful. I was truly fortunate to have had the chance to meet her!

  • Absolutely perfect! I don't know if I've ever heard a better rendition.

  • Shirley Jones has a voice like an angel and always lights up the screen. (I only saw her in Oklahoma, Carousel, and The Music Man) Her rendition of this song is even better than the original version.

  • Oh my gosh YES!!! i always watch this song instead off the movie! and i own it!

  • Another thing I saw Shirley Jones in was Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

  • Fabulous of course... Was this a live performance, or from a film? I am always bemused... In these musical films, where does the orchestra suddenly spring from?

    Seriously good music.

  • It was done for the Danny Thomas Show around 1959. The show was recorded in front of a live audience and then broadcast on tv a few weeks later.

  • Wow, as much as love Audrey McDonald's version, Shirley's is my very favorite.

  • I LOVE Shirler Jones. She has the perfect voice.

  • Lauritz Melchior accompanies her on the piano.

  • Dear AEIPop,

No! Ms Jones is still alive..she just doesn't

    perform as much these days.

  • She us very much alive and well.

  • Shirley Jones' rendition of Might As Well Be Spring

surpasses the versions of Audra McDonald, Jane Monheit,

Bryan Turfel and others I've heard on You Tube.

Richard Rodgers could write those haunting melodies.

    America's opera.

  • I saw her a few years ago on Broadway in 42nd Street. She was wonderful as ever!

  • She is simple yet elegant, thanks for sharing.

  • oh Shirley. :)

  • Lovely. She should have made more musicals, too. "Oklahoma!," "Carousel," and "The Music Man" showcase her talents as an actress and singer, but in later years she became known simply for "The Partridge Family."

  • Ahh sshe is so pretty and talanted!

  • Wow I've been looking for this forever. I knew Shirley was on an episode of the Danny Thomas show, but never found it. Is it on video?

  • Shirley Partridge! Although, I must admit, I never really cared for her voice that much.

  • I enjoyed it very much. Shirley Jones had a beautiful voice and face too.

  • Remember the Partrige Family ? David Cassidy`s TV mother !

  • Not to mention Drew Carey's TV show love interest.

  • Beautiful song!

    Shirley Jones is the best!
