This is probably close to what Rogers and Hammerstein intended. I don't recall if she did the Broadway version of State Fair. Most of the versions I heard of this were Jazz versions so it was nice to hear it originally and with the intro. I never cared for Danny Thomas or Make Room for Daddy. He was kind of scary because he was always yelling all the time. Yikes! What a nice piece of film here. Thanks for the post.
why doesn't Maggie whiting's 1945 version ever show up on "youtube world"? that was the definitive version, in my book. shirley sure had looks and talent though.
In the Orginal State Fair, the girl who plays this character had to have someone else sing her songs...I wonder why they just didn't ask Shirley, she is wonderful!
@katerbuggz The movie State Fair came out in 1945. At that time, Shirley would have been 11 years old. But you are right about one thing, she would have been great playing that role.
What a truly nice voice she had ~ no wonder she was featured in some of the most popular Musicals on the silver screen....I think she was wasted on TV shows such as
"Our State Fair..is a great state fair! Don't miss it...don't miss it! (Don't even come late...)
This is the best version of the song. Anne Margarette did a version and hers was good but I think Shirley Jones was a Mezza Suprano...Anne Margaret...NOT!
when I was 5 years old watching her in The Music Man, I thought I'd die, I was so much in love with her. Ronnie Howard was so lucky to be in that movie with her. --->Fast forward to 2007, saw her in solo Concert in Waltham MA at the high school. Terrific show, she is very tiny I got to be close up to Shirley. I also had a crush on her step-son David Cassidy, also her other sons.
Shirley came and sang here in Austin, Texas a few months ago. She gave a wonderful performance and was very gracious and beautiful. I was truly fortunate to have had the chance to meet her!
Shirley Jones has a voice like an angel and always lights up the screen. (I only saw her in Oklahoma, Carousel, and The Music Man) Her rendition of this song is even better than the original version.
Fabulous of course... Was this a live performance, or from a film? I am always bemused... In these musical films, where does the orchestra suddenly spring from?
Lovely. She should have made more musicals, too. "Oklahoma!," "Carousel," and "The Music Man" showcase her talents as an actress and singer, but in later years she became known simply for "The Partridge Family."
best performance of this song I've ever heard

Shirley Jones' rendition of Might As Well Be Spring
surpasses the versions of Audra McDonald, Jane Monheit,
Bryan Turfel and others I've heard on You Tube.
Richard Rodgers could write those haunting melodies.
