  • its called undulating not crouching

  • Much Respect, from Dan Cushing (aka-bubba) Nice.

  • AHHH! We play this in band && holy crap right away I was like :0 thats not Forticimo! but then they played louder! AHH!(:

  • The first sounds from a Drum Corp I had ever heard... Blue Devils F Tuning followed by the entire show. August 1976 at Drum Major Camp in Redding PA just days before they would win their first national in Philli. They gathered, I had no idea what to expect. I sat down dead center and about 50 feet away. From the first note, my hair went straight back, and I... was hooked. I have been a corpsman ever since... On with it BD!

  • They could play this for their show every year and I'd give them a 100.00 haha

  • i'm a woodwind player (tenor sax) and usually prefer less brass but this is amazing

  • I can watch this over and over again and it will still give me chills. God damn I love this corps.

  • @JacobKilledBatman

    SAME HERE

    TEARS OF JOY

  • i could have sworn this is the B flat tuning..

  • @heywhatsername92 I think after they switched from g bugles they still called it f

  • @heywhatsername92 This was before 2000. Concert F tuning.

  • @Drag2hand Wrong....This is 2001.

  • @miles211 Oh. Not exactly a big fan of BD.

  • TENOR SPLIT END OF DITTY <3

  • Pffft they are all bands now. Drum and Bugle Corps died when they allowed in Bb instruments in 2000.

  • oh ok, makes sense

  • Comment removed

  • f tuning is awesome!

  • *goosebumps*

  • Anyone have sheet music for any part of Ditty, or hopefully the full score? I have music that I can trade for it. Latin Lover, Latin Lover Grande, Double Beat 2004, Electric Wheelchair 2003, Bunco Rules.

  • Hey darthmitsurugi,

"That drum line is so in sync" because these kids gave up at least a whole YEAR of their lives to live the dream that lasts only as long as the show does. A whole year of preparation for a 10 minuute show.

  • AMAZING!

  • i hate to say it, but the opening does awayday and adam gorb a great disservice.

  • damn that drum line is so in synch

  • still, they're overdoing the crouching.

  • omg i we play this before competition but it is NOThing like theirs! i love Blue DeVILS!

  • I have so much respect for BD, they are AMAZING, but I think they look absolutely stupid when they crouch while switching notes, but they are simply unbelievable, some of the best brass players I have ever heard.

  • They crouch because they're putting all they can into some of those notes, and it adds a bit more oomph.

  • I think it's more for air support.

  • That is pretty sexy.

  • well said

  • agreed!

  • god i love this shit!

  • dude ditty is insanely fast in this!

  • Ah. Awayday 2001.

    Loved the show

  • Comment removed

  • it's a corps not a band

  • i converted this vid to my ipod touch and listen to it every day!!! GO TRUMPETS:D

  • that song was in our show last year except a simpilar drum part. awesome song. I was in eight grade tho so i only got to watch it from the stands

  • 1:06-1:11

    OMG snares

  • HOLY SHIT....

  • belle vidéo ,chaine très instructive, PHILOXIO

  • Those quads are SICK!!!! :D

  • the song at the end is called "Awayday"

  • The ending piece of this video is the real BD

Why couldnt they bring that out on the field this year?

    :)

  • BD definitely better than now as far as style and content but this is still a shadow of their pinnacle in the 80s. THAT was BD at its absolute peak. Never been the same since.

  • They begin playing a Field show version of the concert piece Trittico by Vaclov Nelhybel near the end. :-)

  • Oh how I love the Ditty.

  • GO CAVIES!!!! lol i like the blue devils too.

  • what is the name of that piece they are playing in the end??

i cant remember? can anyone help me out?

  • drumline from 1:07 on.........ridiculous..........insane.. ....

actually the entire time the drumline was laying down the law.

  • in 1:05 what year did they play that song please tell!

  • 2001

  • ne1 wanna trade drumline score for paradiddle plus score pm me

  • Ahhhh, F Tuning + Diddy = heaven on Earth!!

I love how the horns drown out the battery lol, this makes me wish I had been able to see it in person

  • its ditty.

  • if you need the f tuning music i can give it to you

  • it'd be great if you could send it to me

  • this is the stuff, that makes me, a drummer, wish i had chosen brass :D for real.

  • hi can someone enlighten me? Whys that when theyre playing the F tuning towards the third round of it many of the players are like bending their knees or sort of squatting? does it improve air flow or something?

  • It's purely a hype thing. Has no musical benefit and can be quite detrimental if done incorrectly. Looks cool, though.

  • i think there is some benefit to this exercise though most of the time it is used to make people crazy

  • there playing so high and so loud that the need to re leave all that pressure and they squat to get most of that pressure out

i do that and it helps to play louder.

  • It's called a Plie- It really helps your legs after standing in arc like that for a long time, and hey, it looks cool!

  • the tuning at the beginning they sound pretty nasty...sound is out of character with how u play horns.

  • camara, ass.

  • the drumming is so perfect.

  • indeed it is

  • The excerpt they play after the Bb tuning was the beginning of "Awayday Blue" from 2001.

  • o ok

  • how come i dont see casey brohard and tim jackson on the drumline

  • TO EVERYONE THIS WAS ORIGINALLY CALLED F TUNING IT WAS ONLY CHANGED TO Bb TUNING WHEN TRUMPETS SWITCHED FROM G HORNS TO Bb horns in 2000

  • Yea but the entire key for the piece is in Concert B flat, therefore making it B flat tuning and not F. The peice is named on the key from the entire corps, not just off of the mellophones. Sorry not trying to sound like a bad guy, just discussion that's all.

  • Isn't this B Flat Tuning....

The note is F on mellophone but it is in concert B Flat...

  • That's because Melophones are pitched at concert F.

  • HOOOOO......LLLyyyyyyyyy...... SHIT

  • We play this as a warm-up/psych-out at the football games and everyone goes crazy

  • all i can say is sexy

  • Damn, I would have had more fun in high school if I was in America, lol. Canada doesn't do anything like this! Not even here in Toronto.....for shame!! I would love to add to this squad's trombone line!

  • Canada did boast some world-class corps. I'll admit not quite on the same scale as Blue Devils. But within the past 20 years you had Dutch Boy reach 12th and Kiwanis Kavaliers reach 14th (both from Kitchener) of the best DCI corps in the world.

  • This is DCI not High school...Professional Bugle Corps. AMAZING SHIT eh.Although we competed in state championships all through my 4 years. Walked away Grand Champions my Sophmore year.I miss it so and try to catch as many DCI shows as I canin the summer=0)

  • Drum Corps marches Baritones :P

  • only good brass instrument...

  • yes sir

  • yeah i noticed that too! lol

  • AAHHH Stick Heights at 1:09!!!!!!!! SICK

  • YEEAAA BOIIII

  • HAIL JAZZ!!!

  • I like them both, but ditty is kick ass nonetheless.

  • ditty is so much better than grievous groove

  • Especially during the hornline warmup...gives me chills

  • friken awesome

  • What was Rudy during 55ish? Hahahah

  • This corp is off the chain :-)

  • corps, not a band ;)

  • It's still called F tuning cause it is the same exercise they have used for a long time, but it used to be played on G horns. So therefore since it is the same exercise it is still called F tuning...

  • its always is becuase the screamers want to stay out longer so everyone can hear them. they always do that. not becuae they dont know when to stop.

  • yeah...

they are typical trumpet players haha

  • Their warm ups are better than some corps shows.

  • you cant beat some f**kin old BD...this is awesome

  • my band director's brother plays the timphony for the blue devils. hah i know, great connection. but i think it's pretty sweet.

  • this is amazing.

  • Too cool!

  • this is from 2002 when they did away day

  • this is an old video... from a good couple years ago. more like 2001.

  • go blue devils. winner to the 2007 dci championships

  • There are a few different things in drum corps that will flat make you stop, and just say "OH MY LORD DAAAAAAAMN!!!!!" Blue Devils warming up is one of those things...

oh and btw, Spikaz003 must have never even been in plain ol' band to ask that question...that's bad, like real bad...

  • does anyone have a sheet music to these chords?

  • its like Bb then Eb first inversion then F first inversion and last Bb 1ST inversion. i think. idk but yeah.

    VgC mutha fakas

  • Bb-Bb/F-Bb/D/F-Bb/Eb/G-Bb/Eb/F/A-Bb/D/F/Bb

  • AHHH gives me goosebumps EVERYTIME!!!!

  • same. i couldnt beleive that this is how good somebody could be.

  • It is called F tuning because back in the day when they did this exercise it was on the bugles and it was actually done in F concert. It became known as F tuning and the name sticks today even though it isn't really in F anymore. Hope that clears it up for everyone.

  • They played ditty! in this i love Ditty

  • ditty is such a sweet warmup

  • damn i guess your all damn geniuses huh? your right its in f***ing Bb. but you can call it whatever you want, and btw its I I6 I6/4 IV V I, because you can hear the authentic cadences. and if you cant hear that then i think it time for theory again. i dont know how you heard a f***ing minor chord.

  • the first chord is Bbmaj, then F/Bb, then D/Bb, Gmaj, A7, then Bbmaj. which means it could be in Bb or F. correct me if i'm wrong.

  • you are wrong.

  • the A7 would have to be a A2 flat 5 diminished 9.

  • Bring back the Ditty!

  • oh im sure the "well qualified" hs band teachers that run the drum corps know about music theory...im just disagreeing with the name of this video. its in Bb...thats the only correct answer.

  • .....its still in Bb. Calling it F is, by music theory, entirely incorrect.

  • then playing any song with the same notes just in a different key, you would call it the same song. you can call it anything youd like. yes it is in Bb but maybe the f is referring to the fifth in the beginning. Bb to the F. you cant prove either way.

  • .......the tonic is Bb. therefore its in Bb major. therefore its a Bb chord progression, period. jeesh... are you completely ignorant or what?

  • You are right Doctor, it should be Bb as it is in Bb. But for SO many years it was in F I think it is just awkard for some people to change. It is almost a habbit for some people now to say F tuning.

  • 2001

  • what year is this?

  • This is by far my fav drum corps warm up/ tunning

  • Is this at Bakersfield?

  • Anyone with a bit of musical training can figure that one out.

For those who don't the chords are as follows

    Bb,D,F

    Eb,G,Bb

    F,A,C,E

    Bb,D,F

  • wrong......the E is an Eb

  • oh, sorry, correct. I also typed this while tired.

  • these chords are not all major. there's not one Eb chord in here. nor is there an F7. or a C or even a D or F for that matter. the order is Bb maj, Bb/F, Bb/D, G maj, A7, Bb maj. The reason they're Bb/F and Bb/D instead of just simply D or F, is the Bb is still dominant in the chord.

    learn some theory.

  • actually i got those backwards, they're actually F/Bb and D/Bb

  • congratulations...you have succeeded in sounding like an idiot. Every chord, but the last, in this chord progression is major. Are you deaf or just stupid?

  • every but the 2nd to last excuse me, its late haha.

  • Bb Octave, BbM, BbM, Eb Inverted/Gm6, BbM4V7, BbM

  • same here, thefork159. lol, it's such a hype to play it in the arc before a show.

  • it really is amazing!

  • i get goosebumps every time i watch this

  • sweet vid. love the fact that you were on the tennors for most of f-Tuning. I am a tennor player myself :)

  • This is a Bb sequence....not F. I think high schools do F bc the musicians cant play high enough.

  • How about that 1989 Solo!!!

  • I believe BD does B flat tuning :$

Nice vid though, I love Ditty :)

  • LOL hang over in the end on the trumpets. My band does a halfway version of this excercise. Me and the other lead trumpet do the high part even though our director says not to. Owned, right?

  • Heh, one of our trumpets does that too :P

    Owned is correct lol
