As good as this performance is, it is amazing how much better the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has gotten since this performance. Jessop instituted age and service limits, which reduced the number of older voices, and demanded and coached the vibrato out. The sound has changed, and the unity and diction is now astounding, really, when you consider the size of the choir.

@memuar It constantly amazes me how so many of the critics of the Catholic church have so little actual knowledge of what they are criticizing. It would likely never occur to a Catholic, from the pope on down, to care about the sexual preference of an artist or anyone for that matter. We don't sit around obsessing about this stuff. Richard Wagner was an anti-semite, yet Jews around the world, conduct, play and listen to his music for its content.
@jgesselberty what amazes me is how catholics are totally hypocritical and selfish as if their belief was the one and ONLY here to be. You and your pope don't care about sexual preference? Am I listening to some major bollocks by any chance? Ofcourse child molestation is not a sin also, isn't it? Does anybody need some absolution? Here you go! No problem! Criticizing? Man you haven't got a tiniest clue of what you are talking about!
Everyone needs to take this argument elsewhere, how can you be so mad while on this page listening to this song? Do you all have it on pause or something?

Are you sure that this is the Mormon choir? Beautiful! While fleeing from the East coast narrowly escaping from being hung he traveled to the west coast, one of the little girls he abducted to be his wife was 8 years old, did God tell him that too!
@ryanjurek It is.....a tad too fast! I think the Conductor maybe a little nervous! ;-) Because he doesn´t enjoy the brilliantly composed breaks in the Piece...
@ryanjurek: I heard a live version yesterday which was even a little faster than this. I asked one of the singers about it, and it seems it is an extremely difficult work to sing. Therefore if they sing it too slow, they have problems with singing it well. If it's a little faster, it gives less problems.
@ryanjurek I agree with you. I also think that the vibrato is a little much. Should be sung with a straighter tone. Takes the chords out of wack sometimes when the vibrato goes a little crazy. Love this piece.
I've been a fan of this since I first heard it (interestingly, it was in a video game "Homeworld")...it still makes the hair on the back of my neck crawl at the start of it.
Is very easy to see how stupid is USA people, how ingorant, intolerant, without any culture. This is a great interpretation. There are not many choirs IN THE WORLD that can sing like this, so, please, do a favor to the world and the humand kind and try to think somtimes. is not that hard. doesnt matter who is singing,, Music rise men mind, Music is part of the universe, part of everything that exist. don´t be so light
@romanroman74 ....0.o America without culture? are you stupid? and all Americans dumb? again are you stupid? you are ignorant and intolerant to say we all are, for that is a lie, you sir are a hypocrite.
@JTAG37 Old enough that I don't call people by "Mr. Trollface". Why do so many kids your age assume everyone on youtube is a preteen? Please, try to avoid posting comments unless you have something worthwhile to say.
@romanroman74 To whom are you replying? May I point out the irony that you are the one being ignorant and intolerant by stereotyping 300 million people. This is a song by an American composer sung by an American choir. How can you justify saying that America has no culture? Take your own advice and think..
@lcozzarelli though your claim is quite compelling and very well thought out... i must intervene and state that calling The "UNITED STATES OF (AMERICA)" in short "America" is an ignorant statement in it's self. America is in fact 2 continents and not just 1 country. American is also an incorrect Label. The technical name for someone born in the United States (of) "America" is in fact [US Citizen].
@Jooleein88 I wasn't ranting, I was replying to romanroman74's unprovoked attack on 'USA people'. As a US citizen myself, I felt I had to point out that both the composer and the choir are from the US, since he was obviously ignorant of that fact. Your argument over irrelevant semantics, besides being totally unenlightening (we all know that the US is just part of the Americas), misses my point completely. Somehow I think you know that, though...:)
nice for a moment i think that thsi is not mormon, and thanks God I realize that is mormon, mormon or moron is a sect they believe that jesus is michael x/ and believe that there are 2 gods x/ is insane a disturb...
If anyone have this version (or anything chorus version) in better sound quality of this. Ill be invite all subscription for Samuel Barber- " Agnus Dei" I prefer loose less format. Thanks for every one.
@bobsickle2 Regarding this comment of yours: Let no-one forget the tragedy of the events at pearl harbour-May those brave Japanese pilots rest in peace.
I agree. Regardless of their ideas and reasons, I respect them for doing what they did, doing kamikaze attack on America ships. The reason I respect them is not because of their ideas but that they believe so strongly and so whole heartily in their ideas that they were willing to sacrifice their own lives. This is courage.
@8jwong14 you do know that Japanese pilots in the military were forced to kamikaze towards the end of the war, right? you do realize that there is no ideal behind kamikaze except a desperate and sad tactic used by a desperate enemy, right?? you do know that there wasn't a single suicide attack at pearl harbor, right?
@Omgshoes017 Not all of them were forced. Even if pilots were forced once they took to the air, they could choose whether to do it or not. I know the suicide attack were'nt at Pearl Harbor but on one of those oceans ( I confuse the names) where the US carriers were. Pearl Harbor was just attacked. Suicide attack are always desperate techniques but usually, for someone to go along, they may not necessarily be pressured into doing so but because of their strong belief.
I could care lees about the sexual orientation of the composer... I mean, hell, Tchaikovsky was gay, and MANY people love his music. As for this particular recording- far be it from me to judge the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but I could definitely do without the wide vibrato from the soprano(s). To me, this piece needs the purer sound of a straighter tone.

I can not believe what I am reading here. Grow up! This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful pieces EVER written and the MTC has sung it beautifully. Thank you for posting it jp, I much appreciate it. And for those that continue to act like Children of the Corn, I am sure there is some south park that is missing a comment.
You are comparing apples to oranges, buddy. Ever compared size? The CTC has roughly 35 voices vs MTC's 360. This point alone verifies that an "interpretation," as you call it, is totally subjective, as is your opinion. We needn't ding one to build another. This is simply not interesting. Cultivated, meaningful critiques are appreciated.
@blnzoad Unless you actually saw these men have homesexual sex, you have no way of knowing that they were actaully queer. So they lived together for 40 years in the same house. Maybe it was to save money on expenses. You don't know for sure. I haven't seen any interviews Barber gave saying he was "Totally Gay". You fags just need to go away, like to Mars.
@blnzoad Because it was writen for the church. Angus Dei , " Lamb of God". Its part of the western liturgy. Jesus Jesus jesus theri I said it. The 800 pound gorilla.
@ashleylynnjoan it's really hard for a choir to do this piece the original tempo because it's just so long. the lines are beautiful, but taxing. i'm singing this with a choir at my university, and we're taking it about this tempo. it's really the only way you can without dying.
Matzenino: This is a landmark composition from an American composer. It was originally a movement of a string quartet that Barber penned. Barber then arranged it for string orchestra (Adiagio for Strings). Along the way, he arranged it for mixed voices using the text of "Agnus Dei," which translates to "Lamb of God," a text used in some forms of the Christian faith. If you want a definitive performance of it, listen to Robert Shaw's version with his Festival Singers. Enjoy!
Esta música -tan bella- la asociaré por siempre al triste momento para la Nación Argentina en que nuestra Jefa Espiritual, Santa Evita, pasó a la inmortalidad
@matzenino Barber originally wrote it in 1936 as an instrumental piece for string orchestra -- hence, Adagio for Strings. He added lyrics and re-scored it for voice in 1967, set to the Latin prayer Agnus Dei, or "Lamb of God". So the choral version is called Agnus Dei; the orchestral version is called Adagio for Strings.

Please, try to avoid posting comments unless you have something worthwhile to say.
vrwaters 1 year ago
@romanroman74 To whom are you replying? May I point out the irony that you are the one being ignorant and intolerant by stereotyping 300 million people. This is a song by an American composer sung by an American choir. How can you justify saying that America has no culture? Take your own advice and think..
lcozzarelli 1 year ago 2
@lcozzarelli though your claim is quite compelling and very well thought out... i must intervene and state that calling The "UNITED STATES OF (AMERICA)" in short "America" is an ignorant statement in it's self. America is in fact 2 continents and not just 1 country. American is also an incorrect Label. The technical name for someone born in the United States (of) "America" is in fact [US Citizen].
Jooleein88 1 year ago
@lcozzarelli An American is a person part of the melting pot of cultures within the Northern, Central, and Southern America's. Not a "USC"
food for thought before your next rant on culture, races, and stereotypes
Jooleein88 1 year ago
@Jooleein88 I wasn't ranting, I was replying to romanroman74's unprovoked attack on 'USA people'. As a US citizen myself, I felt I had to point out that both the composer and the choir are from the US, since he was obviously ignorant of that fact. Your argument over irrelevant semantics, besides being totally unenlightening (we all know that the US is just part of the Americas), misses my point completely. Somehow I think you know that, though...:)

8jwong14 1 year ago
@8jwong14 you do know that Japanese pilots in the military were forced to kamikaze towards the end of the war, right? you do realize that there is no ideal behind kamikaze except a desperate and sad tactic used by a desperate enemy, right?? you do know that there wasn't a single suicide attack at pearl harbor, right?
Omgshoes017 1 year ago

One lady and her insufferable vibrato sticks out like a sore thumb. This interpretation doesn't hold a candle to The Choir of Trinity College.

You fags just need to go away, like to Mars.

ashleylynnjoan 1 year ago
@ashleylynnjoan it's really hard for a choir to do this piece the original tempo because it's just so long. the lines are beautiful, but taxing. i'm singing this with a choir at my university, and we're taking it about this tempo. it's really the only way you can without dying.
mpnineteen 1 year ago
@mpnineteen It's supposed to be just a hair slower... It really is supposed to make you want to die, singing it.

Enjoy!

The Agnus Dei is Mr. Barber's choral setting of his instrumental piece Adagio for Strings.
heesendr 1 year ago
I realy love this piece of music but can somebody explain me the difference between Agnus Dai and Adagio for Strings?
matzenino 1 year ago
@matzenino Barber originally wrote it in 1936 as an instrumental piece for string orchestra -- hence, Adagio for Strings. He added lyrics and re-scored it for voice in 1967, set to the Latin prayer Agnus Dei, or "Lamb of God". So the choral version is called Agnus Dei; the orchestral version is called Adagio for Strings.
