I've heard so much of this being stereotyped. This movie was done true to the way that Joel Chandler Harris wrote the uncle remus stories. This is the way that they talked there. The stories Harris got were from an old Black man that told stories as life lessons for childern. Harris wanted to keep this wonderful mans memory alive. As a child I wanted so much to find Uncle Remus. I would walk through woods to try and find him. I was heart broke to find James Baskett died the year of filming
Absolutely not racist!! Such a wonderful storyteller. Storytellers are almost a thing of the past that we need to bring back and just listen to the stories and the lessons learned from them, not look for the least little thing to witch about. Uncle Remus entertained thousands of children both white and black. Look at the stories and storyteller people, there are lessons here to be learned.
I love Uncle Remus! I remember when I was a little squirt back in the late 60's I would listen to this album over and over and over again. Thank you for sharing, never saw the movie. Uncle Remus RAWKS ! ! Much, much better than Lady GaGa!
Walt Disney liked Baskett, and told his sister, Ruth Disney, that Baskett was "the best actor, I believe, to be discovered in years." Even after the film's release. Disney also campaigned for Baskett to be given an Academy Award for his performance
without so called black stereotypes, we would not have about 96 and a half percent of all the jazz, rock, blues, and pop music in which we all revel and delight ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. without Minstrel shows, the world would not be better place. Nearly all people who have a background of enslavement, poverty and oppression, made their music, poetry and art which is not diminished as because of its origin.
why did this have to turn into a race debate? It was just a song about how I feel about my life, my attitude, and what makes me feel good. I did not nor do I think about racial issues because it is a non issue to me. Haven't we matured since back then as individuals and a nation of people?
Where did you get this clip?I would like to know because Uncle Remus was never released out side of theaters in the 60s and i Would like to get a copy of the movie
If you've seen the whole movie you can say the plantation slaves perpetuate a racist stereotype. The movie was set in pre-civil war times on a plantation. Pretty stupid place and time to set a kids movie but in the 50's it was acceptable. If you get past all that the message is actually pretty good and Uncle Remus is the best/most lovable character in the movie. I would say the movie has some racist parts but its also being factual to the time its set in. Overall it has some good messages.
have to view , it in the context of its era. Sure now we can view it as perpetuating racial stereotypes but dont think we can condemn it without also condemning films which perpetuate class stereotypes or stereo types about women etc.
Thered be few old films that we'd be able to watch from that era if we objected to any that stereotyped one group or other.
As a sweet film of its time I love it..for me it still has a feel good quality..
bleedblue,no,they didn't.But that is part of the sweet wisdom of Uncle Remus. He shows us that you can overcome hard situations,& live a happy & worthwhile life. And he comes off better than many of the White adults, especially the father who is quite the weenie.
The thing about this clip is that it doesn't show the full context of the film. The whole idea of the movie is that there is a kind old black slave, who can't do much, but can still tell fun stories for the white children of his slave master. The film, including the cartoon portions, does much to perpetuate racial stereotypes.
WTF ?:)) my name is remus ......this is my name from '92 :)) omg ..very cool thing,i'm from romania ,and my name is popa remus sorin :))) coooool i like how those childs say my name :))
I see Uncle Remus more as a country gent not as a black stereotype. It's actually quite appealing and not at all offensive. I could easily see this as a burl ives character as well. This has the same feel as country bear jamboree had at disneyland. That wasn't offensive and neither is this. We've moved WAY WAY WAY WAY past these stereotypes. It's time to releases this movie to video and view it for what it is a country themed good time film and nothing more.
Really you don't find the portal of black people as uneducated and happy to be a second class citizen as racist? This character sends a message that minority's should know their place as being less than white people. I don't see how thats a good time film, it would leave a bitter taste in my mouth if I had to watch this as a kid.
Yeah right, like there's noooobody down south like uncle remus. Do some travelin. Plus they are far worse characters from those days. I saw it as a kid and never once looked st it that way. Only liberals and people looking for that make a fuss over it. Wah wah wah. You can get it on ebay and other sites because they sell it in places like japan where I got a copy from. great quality and only sub text during the songs. lighten up babies, it's history, you can't erase everything that offends!
This isn't as racist as all the gangster crap that kids see now a days. Black people say this movie has stereotype characters in it, well if the stereotype is that all black people are uneducated and can't speak proper english then I guess all the gangsters and rappers are just the new age black stereotype.
mark: omGod. Nobody on the internet has ever said it better. If more of the gangsta-rap folk acted like UNCLE REMUS, the world would be a heep more nicer...
I listened this music movie for the first time when I was a little child, 6 years old in 1947. This is only for me a remembrance in my mind. That's all
If MORE shows were like this, our society would be BETTER...GREAT MORALS in shows from the 40's- 60's....Not all that CRAP that warps kids minds, gives off sexual suggestions, immoral examples like HOMOSEXUALITY...AND YOU want to say is this show "racist?" Please...It is a classic and is GREAT entertainment...I respect this actor MUCH MORE that the garbage actors out there today....Thanks for the clip...
Is this racist? Yes. Is it a product of the times in which it was made? Yes. Does the fact that we are more educated today and most, but not all, see no difference due to colour or creed mean that we should relegate this film, an outstanding example of the pictures of the time, to the fire? I certainly hope not. Fascists burn books, educated, rational people read them.
Blazing Saddles used racism in a Ironic way, you were ment to laugh at the racist townsfolk and route for the black sheriff to save the day. But you proberly didn't get what the film was trying to do and just laughed every time they said "nigger".
This is who Zappa wrote the song about. All of the black entertainers from the minstrel and vaudeville shows and what happened to them in the early days of Hollywood. Why do you think Uncle Remus was going up to Beverly Hills to knock the jockeys off'na rich peoples lawns? Because he was pissed, he was working just as hard as any Mary Pickford or Doug Fairbanks but only getting a quarter of the pay. I miss Zappa.
I posted this because it was a wonderful, entertaining movie. My grandfather brought me to the theater to see it, there were children and adults of all color there, and everyone loved it. If you listen to the song, you would realize it is about starting your happiness with each bright new day, appreciating the simple things in life, it's what you want it to be, it is up to you. I think it's a shame that everyone wants to find the negative in whatever they look at.
Objectively, it is charming, like a lot of the cartoons shown when we grew up that featured big-lipped caricatured natives and blackface scenes in the Little Rascals. I also remember seeing it in the theater (in the South), and I was born in 1976. But to divorce the content of its context is to stick your head in the sand. The grinning deference of the slaves and black farmhands that Uncle Remus represents is a myth, or at best, a survival strategy.
"were children and adults of all color there, and everyone loved it. " wasn't the actor who played Uncle Reus not allowed to atend the premeire because he was black?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is some racist shiznet!!!! C'mon a black plantation worker singing about a damn zippity doo da day??? Is this before or after they chopped off his foot. Disney you racist frozen bastard you.
Yep, I bet when he made this film he was very proud of his role. Now we have idiots who ruin such a lovely film all because they cannot handle the idea that they have black skin. Closeminded racists themselves!
the quality of the movie is great and it definitely has emotional appeal. But fact of the matter is that it protrays a negative stereotype of simple mindedness in the african american society.
I have some really good news for all Song of the South fans!Song of the South has been officially confirmed to come out on DVD in late '08 or early '09!
it's not the movie adaptation that caused so much controversy in the mid 1900's, it's the original collection of stories written in 1890's that was deemed racist at the time.
Uncle Remus...Unkle Ruckus. Do some research people. Being a Black person who does not get the racist context of this image does not excuse it or make it any less racist. It just means you are all lacking critical media training and don't understand the intention behind it. Birth of Nation is not offensive to some people either and that does not make it any less inflammatory. You can choose to understand the and hear dog whistle or not.
By the same token...how can this movie, much less Birth of a Nation (1915) be judged by today's standards? It's a product of the times. What else can you say?
Uncle Remus is a great character don't get me wrong, soothing voice... great character of charm, but he looks like a plantationer... because people in the south didn't walk around with rips in their knees and poorly strawed hats. SLAVES DID!
When he looks at the birds, look at their faces and identify the sambos. You have to see the whole thing to understand my perspective. I don't mean to anger anyone, but it's clearly evident. Please research and wake up... it's American history people!
Understood. I do know that if someone will look for something bad enough, they'll find it. True perspective... although, to be honest, I wasn't really looking for it. It's just become more evident to me is all. But I believe I understand your point.
I tend to think its lawyers (mostly white corporate "liberals") who pretend to protect children with censorship. Don't confuse the views of a people, with those loudmouths who claim to represent them. The possibility of a big money lawsuit means more than any so-called "moral" issue here.
Is anyone going to learn about him if the film is buried away? His name was James Baskett. He also did the voice of Brer Fox. In March 1948, Baskett received a special Academy Award for his performance as Uncle Remus.
Actually, this is not a rascist story. As told by blacks. Bre Rabbit is always using his head to out smart the white southern maless (Bre Bear and Bre Fox). Take note to the hints: the rope and the fire this story was cleverly but together for Black Children.
Thrummer1953: There are some things that are just not laughable. For example, can you honestly tell me that you can tell a Jewish person to lighten up about the Holocaust?? Show some cultural sensitivity here or don't bother saying anything at all, otherwise you'll have people like me putting you in your place.
Dear 4EVR, There is nothing like a Holocaust represented here.Get educated or people will show you your "retard's" place.BTW: My mother was Jewish Moron,& loved this movie.
Typical IGNORANT response! As a matter of fact, I am finishing my degree, but the truth eludes you--Education does not equal white man's thinking. And it sounds like you already made up your mind about how you want to see this. I know I hit a nerve with you. You're not talking about an education--you're talking about one-way thinking which equals ignorance and nazism, the very thing you're pissed about! So do yourself and everyone a favor--OPEN YOUR MIND B4 IT'S TOO LATE.
chapeauetbarbe...These are the last words I will ever "say" to you as you are now lo longer worthy of my time
A) When you actually COME from the country and have suffered from racism you can speak on if someone speaks with "slave voices" or on anything else remotely associated with race.
B) and these are the two most important words that ANYONE will ever say to you...GROW UP!
Can someone explain to me how this is supposed to be racist? All I see is a happy, older black man being nice to some little white kids and signing with happy cartoons.
man gtfo it. This was back in the day cartoons. Everyone loved this. The first time I seen it, was 1st grade. That included blacks and whites. So loose the hate it wont take u anywhere.
who understands the public?! kanye complains because the media shows african american looters as robbers during katrina, and then people complain because disney makes a movie about a happy african american guy? make up ur minds...
hey! we're supposed to pretend that there are no racial differences, dont you know? there are no such thing as mannerisms or traits inherent or identifiable about any particular race or culture... why, i feel like i should be very offended... lolz!
I'm a Black American and a proud resident of the South and I don't find it one bit racist. It brought tears to my eyes because it brought back happy memories of my childhood and watching Disney. I just found a story book that has Uncle Remus stories in it among others and my little girl LOVES for me to read them to her. ShutyomouthSneezy and chapeauetbarbe express an opinion...but grow up and express it in a mature way.
Your an UNCLE TOM man. This is on some old confederate flag racist shit Kwatson. Don't talk down to me just because you want some white acceptance my man. Give it up bro' racist, racist, racist. Zip a dee doo dah, racist man!
Thank you!!! i remember it as a child and i have Disney books from my childhood that have the story in it as we'll. i appalled the person that took the chance to place this on youtube.... Racism is taught an bread stop teaching your child the meaning and it will go away... it is a poison and this film was fare from races..... look at today movies....THIS IS A CLASSIC
Fuck this Uncle Remus, racist ass Disney shit! Of course all American whites love this cartoon the most all. Don't try to downplay how fuckin' racist this goddamn cartoon is assholes. They should make a light hearted cartoon of the holocost camps and see how well that plays in the theatre.I Hate American devils, you make me sick.
I saw this in the theater and am so happy to revisit it...no matter how briefly. Your reading of this classic ensures your taking over Mr. Rogers Neighborhood!!!
I heard the little Boy in this movie died of Drug abuse poor guy I wish I could see this movie because I have been wanting to see Song of the South for a long time.
Bobby Driscoll, the little boy in the movie died when he was around 30-31, I think 1968. This movie was in 1946. Sad fact, he was buried in a potter's grave (a mass grave with no markings) in Hart Island, Bronx, NY. since nobody could identify him.
Not all us bleeding-heart liberals consider it racist. Most liberals are staunchly pro-free speech, expression, and publication. But whatever.
Hopefully, they'll release it someday. Everyone agrees that some sorta prologue/disclaimer might be good to explain it in modern vs. historical context.
I've never seen Song of the South but it was my mom's favorite when she was little. I wish Disney would re-release it but they said they weren't planning on it any time soon. :(
I was able to order it [song of the south] online for Christmas for my grandfather for about 50 bucks. It was a slightly less than legal version but it worked fine.
I've heard so much of this being stereotyped. This movie was done true to the way that Joel Chandler Harris wrote the uncle remus stories. This is the way that they talked there. The actor who played Uncle Remus wasn't allowed to attend the premiere in Atlanta in 1946.
ensrifraff 4 years ago
Is anyone going to learn about him if the film is buried away? His name was James Baskett. He also did the voice of Brer Fox. In March 1948, Baskett received a special Academy Award for his performance as Uncle Remus.

i dont get why its like banned? how is this rascist at all? i am honestly confuzed.
WesB 4 years ago
Actually, this is not a rascist story. As told by blacks. Bre Rabbit is always using his head to out smart the white southern maless (Bre Bear and Bre Fox). Take note to the hints: the rope and the fire this story was cleverly but together for Black Children.
LOVELYDAZE2K 3 years ago
you can't even find this anymore. The Used bookstores refuse to carry it (at least i my town). They do sell T-shirts that say "censorshit" on them.

Everyone's got a "laughing-place", except, it seems, todays "African-Americans",who can't seem to lighten up. Pity.
thrummer1953 4 years ago
Thrummer1953: There are some things that are just not laughable. For example, can you honestly tell me that you can tell a Jewish person to lighten up about the Holocaust?? Show some cultural sensitivity here or don't bother saying anything at all, otherwise you'll have people like me putting you in your place.
GWTW4EVR 4 years ago
Dear 4EVR, There is nothing like a Holocaust represented here.Get educated or people will show you your "retard's" place.BTW: My mother was Jewish Moron,& loved this movie.
thrummer1953 3 years ago
Typical IGNORANT response! As a matter of fact, I am finishing my degree, but the truth eludes you--Education does not equal white man's thinking. And it sounds like you already made up your mind about how you want to see this. I know I hit a nerve with you. You're not talking about an education--you're talking about one-way thinking which equals ignorance and nazism, the very thing you're pissed about! So do yourself and everyone a favor--OPEN YOUR MIND B4 IT'S TOO LATE.
GWTW4EVR 3 years ago
the Holocaust was about more than Jews.
the Nazis killed more Slavs, Russians.
yes, the Jews were targeted, but so were other groups.
to me the Holocaust starts with the Boer war and ended (??) with the fall of the Soviet Union, but Red China killed even more people.
Darwin and Marx have killed a tremendous number of people with their totaly incorrect theories.

I will always speek my mind Kwatson813.
I used to like this cartoon when i was little because i did'nt know better.
Disney even acknowledges there are some issues that can be recognised in hindsight regardig Uncle Remus.

chapeauetbarbe...These are the last words I will ever "say" to you as you are now lo longer worthy of my time
A) When you actually COME from the country and have suffered from racism you can speak on if someone speaks with "slave voices" or on anything else remotely associated with race.
B) and these are the two most important words that ANYONE will ever say to you...GROW UP!

Can someone explain to me how this is supposed to be racist? All I see is a happy, older black man being nice to some little white kids and signing with happy cartoons.

realninja 4 years ago

I'm a Black American and a proud resident of the South and I don't find it one bit racist. It brought tears to my eyes because it brought back happy memories of my childhood and watching Disney. I just found a story book that has Uncle Remus stories in it among others and my little girl LOVES for me to read them to her. ShutyomouthSneezy and chapeauetbarbe express an opinion...but grow up and express it in a mature way.

As a child, this movie made me accept african americans all the more. I LOVED Uncle Remus and wanted a neighbor just like him.
Racist? It had just the opposite effect on me.

I heard the little Boy in this movie died of Drug abuse poor guy I wish I could see this movie because I have been wanting to see Song of the South for a long time.
happydayz1992 4 years ago
Bobby Driscoll, the little boy in the movie died when he was around 30-31, I think 1968. This movie was in 1946. Sad fact, he was buried in a potter's grave (a mass grave with no markings) in Hart Island, Bronx, NY. since nobody could identify him.

This was my FAVORITE movie as a child. I was just saying today how badly I wanted to see it again. Thank you so much for posting this.

i looove this cartoon. i used to watch it in Nigeria all time!!! i don't know why ir's not played in the U.S =[
mrsmcfarland 5 years ago
It's not played in the U.S. because the bleeding-heart liberals consider it racist and offensive. How stupid!
zrv1538 4 years ago
Not all us bleeding-heart liberals consider it racist. Most liberals are staunchly pro-free speech, expression, and publication. But whatever.
Hopefully, they'll release it someday. Everyone agrees that some sorta prologue/disclaimer might be good to explain it in modern vs. historical context.

one of the best - have the Japanese Laser Disc - the DVD's aren't legit - use caution when buying and don't bid too high -

I've never seen Song of the South but it was my mom's favorite when she was little. I wish Disney would re-release it but they said they weren't planning on it any time soon. :(
Jen534 5 years ago
They sell it in every country but the US, I guess we cant handle it
bobbybartlett 5 years ago
I was able to order it [song of the south] online for Christmas for my grandfather for about 50 bucks. It was a slightly less than legal version but it worked fine.
