The threatener's have a strong sense of vanity. They will defend their choices to the death for the most part. Nobody likes to be proved wrong or admit they were deceived. Just like when something fortunate happens they claim to have known it would be so all along.
We can condemn the deceived or we can learn from their mistakes. I don't have a clear answer as to what to do but it seems to me that we could use their inertia to carry them in a direction we would like rather than oppose directly
