  • I practiced and now my fingers hurt. Did I do something wrong?

  • @someone3019 no it just takes some getting used to because ppl are used to grabing knifes and forks chopsticks put your hand in an unusall potion as the vid said once you get the hang of it, it becomes almost second nature

  • i own a chop sticks

  • if you want to learn using chopsticks, it' s better to start with wood ones.they are lighter in weight and are much easier to use.

i' m trying quite hard to use the metallic ones, but it's hard.they are thinner and heavier in weight compared to the wood ones.

  • right now i am fighting with my chopsticks and fingers!! :((

  • thanks man thios video is loads better than the sponered one! corrected my style almost instantly after watching this!

  • know that I know this mwhahahhaah I stab you *stab stab stab*

  • i can masturbate

  • it actually worked!! XD thank you!

  • except you never stab things with it ,it is of bad manners to do so

  • uhh....how about if you can't move your top part?? I'm having trouble moving it, because I have nothing to hold the stable part!

  • im using pens which are short (could be the prob) but I have the mechanics down but im noticing on the shorter pens when i close my middle finger is hitting the bottom chopstick and leaves a gap. Is this because im using shorter pens or my pivot point top chopstick isn't back enough ?

  • hihi, i got hello kitty chopsticks ! <33

  • @XmarouchaX thats awesome :3

  • I swear I'll never get it. D;

  • Pull a Karate Kid and grab a fly out of the air with it.

    THEN I'll be super impressed.XD

    Good vid.^_^

  • Were did u get ur chopsticks from?

  • @LaZyCrIsTiAn1 I have set of 6 generic plastic chopsticks from an Asian market that I use when I have company. My daughter brought me a set of mahogany chopsticks when she visited Thailand, and I have a stainless steel pair that I bought at World Market.

  • Thanks, just what I needed!!!

  • y the hell the buttm one not sable y the fock

  • where did u get them metal chop sticks at are they solid or they hollow

  • @nightwalker2830

The chopsticks I'm using are Korean style. They tend to be metal with an end not as blunt as a Chinese style but not sharp like the Japanese style. You can find them pretty easily at a good Korean market.

  • @MechanicalAnt i live in alabama and there no markets here thats korean. I have metal ones but there hollow in side i got them from amazon but i didnt know if yours was solid metal or if hollow

  • ok well when i try to grasp, the tips criss cross . i feel foolish right now

  • i learned this the first time that i tried it :DDD

  • dont use your chopsticks to stab food like a fork, bad manners

dont stick chopsticks upright in bowl of food, bad manners

dont pass food from your chopsticks to another persons chopsticks, bad manners

just thought people aspiring to use chopsticks should know these

  • hard :S

  • This dude has a great teaching voice. One of those soft jazz voices. Actually, his voice could put a baby to sleep. Probably a panda too.

YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO PUT A PANDA TO SLEEP??!!!

    very hard.

  • thank you :) now my lil bro is learning how to eat with chopsticks, he's practising everyday :P :)

I think its not so hard ;)

  • this helped thanx

  • Thanks for watching my video!

For those of you having trouble, keep at it! It takes lots of time and practice to become good.

  • metal is better with what ?

  • yeah, I asked the same question. It was explained to me that he's talking about 'coals'. Hot coals would burn wooden chopstix. Kind of a strange thing to mention imo since I have yet to have the occasion where the sticks need to be dipped into coals for food or any other reason that I know of, but whatever. Anyway, that's what he's talking about.

  • I think what he would be referring to is that, in some restaurants, the food is served to you raw, and there's a small grill in the middle of the table which you use to cook the food yourself. That's one of the only instances I can think of where coals might possibly have to be handled... and even that's pretty uncommon.

  • Ah I think you're right. Such as Korean BBQ where you grill it on a grill in the middle of your table. So metal chopstixs would be a better choice for that kind of heat. Not sure coals are used but rather a butane grill of some sort that I've usually seen. But nevertheless, I do notice that Korean restaurants provide metal chopsticks....possibly for that purpose.

  • i still don't know how to use them

  • o man im trying for 2 days and i can hold it but i cant touch the first with the other.

    :(

  • well, I hold a pencil a little different, but anyway the problem is the second chopstick keeps sliding up the ring finger instead of staying down near the knuckle when I move the middle finger and index up off the second stick in order to manuver the first stick.

Also, why are metal chopstix better for colds? I don't get it.

  • He says metal chopsticks are better for coals, not colds. Coals would be hot since they've been sitting in fire for a while, so they would burn wooden chopsticks if you tried to use them.

As for the problem with the ring finger, I used to have that problem, then I realized I was gripping to hard on the bottom stick. Just let it rest on the finger instead of squeezing, and it also helps to curl the finger up a little.

  • Gripping it too hard doesn't seem to be an issue in my case but curling the ring finger up does help some to hook it under the knuckle somewhat. Thanks. That ring finger issue actually should be discussed more since a lot of people I know have the same problem and can't figure out why it's not working. That little bit of info that is neglected by most of chopstick intructions makes a difference.

  • my middle finger is in the way. D: ahh! lol

  • this is Korean style :)

  • good video.. im trying to learn this. i see it will take some practice not much thx.

  • i cant frikinnn do itttttttttttttt

  • Thanks, was very useful for the training!

  • Xie xie! :) Now I'm gonna try - good luck to me :)

  • excellent - thank you :-)

  • i dont use it like that either.. but it's worth a try.. thanx for sharing anyway... :)

  • hey i dont use chop stike like that

  • can i use the chop sticks to pick up girls?

  • HAHA. If your stick is long enough, sure.

  • its so esy to do the my teacher learn me that in 3ed grade when i get some japanese food or the other i use chopsticks

  • i got it now

    it easy =P

  • hey thanks

  • it's so haaaaaaaaaaaaaard :@

  • Keep at it! You'll get it eventually. Good luck

  • @MechanicalAnt Thanks man, I've seen people master with chopsticks and pick up anything and I thought it was always so easy, it is hard to master but it is gratifying when you succeed :) thanks again man.

  • mhm! =]

  • sugoii *w*

  • my hand starts hurting after a short while and i can't use really much... err.... strength for picking up heavier pieces of food when using this technique.

i'm just laying the stick on my middle finger instead of the ring finger and use the thumb and index finger for moving the other stick. MUCH!!! easier...

  • tnx 4 the info... now i know how to use one.. hehe

  • Just get a fork this is the 21st century.

  • try to eat sushi with fork...

  • I just suck it up.

  • that's so cute! XD

  • Yep about as cute as a Japanese hot dog eating contest. LOL.

  • Yeah right! Doesn't work for persons who have both the 1st and 5th fingers short, like most gaijins do. Trust me.

  • thats disrespectful to the asians when u stab ur food with em or any thing else i guess

  • it's the case of Japanese funeral ceremony. That's why you should never stab food with sticks.

  • dont use chopsticks to stab food. its considered to be bad mannered.

  • thanks now i can eat with them now :)

  • it looks so easy. thanks!

  • try to eat using your hands...much more delicious..aha..lols

  • Cool. Using chop sticks isn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be! Pretty easy... and fun, too! :D

  • Learn about respect foreigns culture. Its result of different food culture with "United States of Ass" or Europe. You can't eat well all kind of noodles with lot of soup. Can you divide fish bones with only fork or spoon? Maybe you'll use your hands instead of chopstick because you even can't use chopstick. Superiority of economic power doesn't mean superiority of all cultures of that country. Learn about respect.

  • I try to learn handling with chopsticks now, too.

Littlebit difficult , but very interessting.

thanks for example, i try my best ^^

    5* ^^

  • Why not use a fork?

  • thnks a lot, i can nw vry easily use chopsticks...even with rice!!...lol

  • I've been using them for about 22 years now, since I was just a 14 y/o white boy. Having many asian friends, of different nationalities, they used them differently too. The Hmong and Lao used them a little differently than my Chinese and Japanese friends. Oddly, my Indonesian friends used forks and spoons almost exclusively.

I rest the lower stick on my middle finger and between my thumb. The upper stick between thumb and forefinger.

I like them more than a fork or spoon personally.

  • "Oddly, my Indonesian friends used forks and spoons almost exclusively."

Yes, in Indonesia, most (if not all) of the people use forks and spoons. We don't use chopsticks except when we eat Chinese (or Japanese, etc) food. Traditionally, we even use our hands sometimes. Hahaha..

  • I guess it wasn't odd afterall, thanks!

  • Good video!!! Thanks for the help.

  • I got it when I went to a japanese restaurant a couple of days ago. Now it seems silly, especially when the asian couple sitting next to me were using forks. If you grew up using a knife and fork, and when you're at home on your own with a takeaway, and you use chopsitcks, it's a bit odd. Speed people, grab your sporks!

  • I live in China and I can tell you that is not how to use chopsticks. The top stick is held by the thumb and index finger and the other by thumb and middle finger. The ring finger is not involved, at all.

The thumb rests on top and covers both.

Yes. only one chopstick should move.

But three-quarters of the way down the chopstick is too low. Most Chinese hold them very near the top.

  • the way of using chopsticks basically differs in asia...

i [indonesian] and my friend [chinese] once compared how we use chopsticks and it turns out that we use it differently.

the types of chopsticks themselves differ in every country, such as china, japan, and indonesia [and most probably other asian countries]

so i don't think there's really an exact rule of using chopsticks, just as long as you can eat using them.

  • ああああああああっh

where did you find metal はし? a hookah shop?

  • loool yes i always ask for easy sticks ;P n thanks for posting this

  • thanks my friend so totally needs to see this. she always asks for the easy sticks when we go out to Maki (a Japanese restaurant ) it's so funny!

  • TNX! it's been embarrassing having to eat with a fork in Japanese and Chinese restaurants gave it a first try and it so simple!

  • THANK YOU! I've always been a bit embarrassed by the fact that I could never get a grasp (pardon the cheap pun) on using chopsticks correctly. Your instruction was crystal clear. I finally got it!!!!!

  • pick up my chopsticks then.

  • What does religion have to do with this!? 0_o

  • LOL it was so funny reading their comments. Obviously not all of them that's just pointless... anyway lol i love using chopsticks when i eat asian food, though of course not indian etc. Wet noodles are a bit tricky but after a few drops you get it :P

  • noteni ni un brillo

  • Almighty Allah made your fingers like chopsticks you can eat with them straight, Iam Arab I use my fingers to eat, I don't know how t use a fork or chopsticks. Just wash your hands before you eat.

  • So even forks are blasphemous now? Holy crap. Thank God I'm a Christian. ^-^

  • you can use chopsticks in islam but your hands are better to enjoy food. nothing can beat your hands not fork not spoon not chopsticks. you need to embrace islam to avoid hell and win paradise. change course towards islam please.

  • You need to find Jesus before Allah brings you to his "paradise," hell. I pray for you. ^-^

  • Never, you will never see paradise without islam. Muslims believe in Jesus you need to read more I said.

  • Bible speaks of Allah in the Old Testiment. 11:14 "For Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. He always seeks to destroy by coming in a false guise." Satan hates man so much he wants them to destroy themselves so they can enter his paradise, "hell." Don't go down that road. The "Great Deceiver" hates you. Anyway good luck. Allah (Satan) hates man, and always will.

  • No, you are ignorant. Jesus was the son of God. Muhammad was a war-lord who raped a 9 year old child, Aisha, who ordered the beheading of thousands of Jewish tribes who refused to bow to him and his "Allah." The bible speaks of an "anti-Christ," one who's sole purpose is to deny Jesus as God. That is Allah, the anti-Christ. He capitalized on the fear of the Arabs, and the desire to enter paradise. But you must do research for yourself, without the shackle or veil of fear in your mind.

  • You need to embrace islam if you want heaven.

  • Avoid Satan, avoid Islam. Studying prophecy is the most important thing for a Muslim, and there eyes will be opened to Jesus Christ.

  • You people are freaking weird, WHY CANT YOU TALK ABOUT CHOPSTICKSSS!??!

  • This what my sister needs! She's a little bit clumpsy, and when I try to teach her is just difficult xD

  • I have been using them my whole life & I still don't hold it the "standard" or right way. Before my family tried to get me to hold it right. But whatever, atleast I have virtually no difficulity. :p

  • technically, you aren't supposed to stab at food with chop sticks, unless you are trying to break apart a big piece of food into smaller pieces.

  • Very true~

  • Hmm ... doesn't look right.

  • ARGHHGHGHGHGHGH its sooo hard, seriously i can hold them, but this is that part that really gets me.

You put your middle finger in the middle, well that stops me from opening and closing it! :(

  • does anything change if ur left-handed?

  • No I'm left-handed and I use them fine.

  • Yeah thats cool. I have to learn how to use them becouse im planning to go to Japan sometime before I die. So I should know how to use Chop Sticks.

  • nope! im left handed too! but for some reason, i dont remember learning..i think i just picked then up and bam! lol srry

  • I think squared plastic chopsticks are a bit trickier than others. Maybe the best are stainless steel like in this video or bamboo, or wood. Squared plastic ones slide a bit don't they? haha What do you think?

  • In Hong Kong, many people, especially young girls, cannot use chopsticks properly. They use them everyday but still cannot handle those two sticks. Oh my goodness!

  • I still don't get it... x_x

  • Thanks, there are Chinese restaurants now in my hometown where I´d like to go and eat.

  • grrr i'm going to hong kong in the summer and i dont want to be one of those western tourists who expects cutlery, but this is really hard!

  • I use chopsticks like all the time (my brothes always call me janess or chiness lol) good job

  • very cool. got to practice now!

  • I hold BOTH chopsticks together like a single pencil.

  • I think people have a problem using chopsticks if they cant do a spock sign, like I cant so it makes it harder for me to use chopsticks

  • thanks ive been looking how to do this for ages you are a king!!!

  • Thanks dude xx

  • gee, macant, thanks a million

  • thnx dude,so usefull for me

  • thanx man. i think i got it down now. but i dont use them like you do, i hold them differently. i think it is different for every individual. whatever technic fits their hand best... peace brother.

  • that did not work for me!! i tried other technics, they didnt work either. i have small hands and short fingers, is that the problem???

  • Small hands really isn't a problem. Asians invented chopsticks and they have tiny hands. The best way is to just practice and you'll get better over time. Keep at it and thanks for watching my vid!

  • it could be a fork for stabbing lol.

  • that is wat i do

  • hahaha, ima start bringing forks to my skool man, all these friggin psycos shooting at inocent people. anyways i thought that his example was funny "it could be a fork for stabbing" lol.

  • who eats with metal chop sticks?

  • Traditional materials for chopsticks are wood, bamboo, bone or metal. Metal is more hygenic and will last longer.

  • it is not that serius

  • I liked your video

  • hhahaha, im azn, so chopstick basically run in my vain. hahahha. dont mean 2 offend any1. lols

  • Chopsticks are evil creations, I can't move the upper one holding them like that. Yet that, it has again and again be confirmed, such as by this video, that it is the only proper way to hold them!

I'm definitely sticking with forks and spoons. Western utensils FTW.

  • wtf i cant chop the soup!!!

  • the lower chopstick moves towards my finger if i put it like i can see it on this movie ... I just wave to make " wall " - hold the lower chopstick with my ring finger because it moves down it when i don't ... i can't imagine how can you hold it like this

  • Great tutorial on how to use chopsticks man, I'm still picking up the hang of it but I'm even better now thanks to this video.

  • i dont get these other coments that say it doesnt work just keep practicing and youll get it sooner or later like me

  • omg i finally got it thanx a lot:]

    im so happy:]

  • that was a really good vid but i still cant get it right lol but ill keep on trying

    and practicing

  • hey, that was awesome, thnx man!!!

  • yea, I can't sit the base chopstick on my ring finger like that cause of two reasons.

    1. because it puts the bottom chopstick at the wrong angle for the top to be inline

    2. because as soon as I squeeze with my thumb, the bottom chop stick slides up to the webbing between my ring and middle finger... so how do you stop the bottom chopstick from moving?

  • I have that same damn problem, or if the bottom sticks stays put the top one crosses down like scissors instead of touching tips with the bottom one. Guess it's all about control.

  • actually, I just found a better instructional video. check out the vid called How To Eat Using Chopsticks by camswitzer. He does a much better job, and actually addresses that problem about mounting the bottom chopstick. =) Let me know what you think of his vid!

  • yeah that was the first one I just used, and I got the holding part down, but when I go to use them, it doesn't quite work and my hand starts to cramp after I try for a few min! lol but his video was very good and easy to follow.

  • doesnt work!

  • He is doing it wrong

  • thanx dude

  • Very helpful. Nice Vid.

  • Cute, but I wouldn't suggest using metal chopsticks. If you're eating hot food, the metal will heat up FAST (small surface-area), and you stand a damn good chance of burning your mouth or tongue. Use plastic or wooden chopsticks instead. They don't retain heat.

  • That's incorrect. YOu don't really have to use the ring finger at all! Also the middle finger is for support and for grasping the forefinger is used. YOU can't even used it to pick up a lighter. I could pick up a round marble and pennies. This is a very misleading tutorial.

  • lmao. I've been using them wrong my whole life, and now I can't do it the right way. -sigh-

  • thank you very much for that =) i just made some noodles a minuet ago and found a pair of chopsticks in a draw so now i can enjoy the noodles to the full thanks (5star)
