I think the main problem I have is that even among moderate Muslims there seems to be a sense that the extremist have some justification of their actions. This would be similar to a Christian justifying the actions of the nutty Westborough Baptist. Religion #1 cause of pain and suffering in the world...also responsible for human sympathy strange very strange. Until we all (religious non-religious) stand and that's enough then these "connections" will continue

I disagree. The number one cause of pain and suffering is because humans are assholes. As if the atheists didnt cause any suffering? What religion did Stalin, Kim jung il, and napoleon kill in the name of.

Nationalism, racism and greed are the real motives. Any differing ideology for that matter. The cold war had minimal religious motives in the mass casualty rate it inflicted on the world.
