The Packers had upper tier playoff and Super Bowl caliber QB's backing up nearly the whole time Favre was the starter. If Favre had been benched in '94, Brunell would have taken the job and run with it. Maybe we still get Hasselbeck and are in the same position to get Rodgers. Who knows? But IF Favre had been benched the Pack would most certainly have been much improved, if not champions, and Favre would have been traded to Jacksonville and washed out under the tender care of Tom Coughlin.

EVERYTHING Brett Favre is he owes to the Packers. The Packers MADE HIM, he didn't make the Packers. It all begins and ends with Harlan. Harlan got the ball rolling in 1989 and stepped in to replace Sherman the GM with Ted Thompson and here we are again. It is no coincidence in my mind that the year Favre came in Thompson did too. Thompson was on the payroll when the Pack were elite in the 90's and he is on the payroll again when the Lombardi was snagged again. Fans should be praising Harlan.

The Packers had upper tier playoff and Super Bowl caliber QB's backing up nearly the whole time Favre was the starter. If Favre had been benched in '94, Brunell would have taken the job and run with it. Maybe we still get Hasselbeck and are in the same position to get Rodgers. Who knows? But IF Favre had been benched the Pack would most certainly have been much improved, if not champions, and Favre would have been traded to Jacksonville and washed out under the tender care of Tom Coughlin.

Beween the warchest, the new revenue streams, and the ever expanding support of revenue sharing, the Packers FINALLY were signing guys like Reggie White. The long and the short of it is Favre was in the right place at the right time. Was he very good? Yes. For a long, long time? Yes. Could the Packers improved without him? Yes. The Packer turnaround began in 1989. Harlan took over for Parins. Ron Wolf was offered the GM job in '87 but turned it down because the Packers were too F'ed up and he said no dice. When Parins moved on, Harlan took over and immediately began improving the facilities and creating new revenue streams. Braatz was fired as GM and Wolf took the job the second time. Wolf got the "girl with the curl" in Holmgren set by the end of 1991. THEN they went and got Favre.

There was a hall of famer and several Packers' Hall of famers on that defense including Leroy Butler and Reggie White as well as a defensive coordinator in Fritz Shermur that is comparable to Dom Capers nowadays. but 3 seasons to statistically break out in his 94 season, by 95 he was named NFL MVP and by 97 his was the first ever 3 Time NFL MVP. Elway was in his 11th NFL season when he finally got past 22 touchdowns, Favre has 33 touchdowns in his 4th season and 38 and 39 the following seasons. Elways average touchdown per season is a mediocre 18.75 while Favre stands at nearly 30 per season. Add the fact that Favre never missed a start for 20 years and it should be obvious who the better choice is.

Favre was pretty much awful in the first half. Levens accounted for about 3/4ths of the Packers' 200 first half yards on a great catch for a TD (on of the best I've seen from a running back) and a long screen that he did all the work. The first season he was a Packer after starting QB Don Majkowski was hurt during the game young Brett came in and threw a epic game winning touchdown pass in the final seconds. Fists-So many forget that Favre was nearly BENCHED in 1994 because he wasn't disciplined enough. But he got his THIRD chance (the first being drafted at all, the second was the Pack fishing his beer sotted ass off Atlanta's third string) when Holmgren stuck with him. By the end of 1995 the Packers were rewarded with an INT in the '95 NFCCG to kill the Pack (the first of many) and a seizure-addled pill addict.
