This song was written in 1915, not 1912, for Antonina Nezhadanova, she was a student at a conservatory in Moscow. When she said it was a pity there were no lyrics, Rachmaninov replied, “You don’t really need words to express the best in you."
@emekonen I read these words somewhere; "I do not know the hearts of anyone and therefore cannot pass judgment on my fellow human beings." Oh yes, I remember now; they are on your own website!
@petermjensen hahahaha I have no recollection of ever writings this, but I am sure that I did. I certainly do not mean it literally. Haha I could not stop laughing when I read what I wrote!
Lovely. A little rushed in places, probably due to the very long breaths required. I prefer it slower and more calm from start to finish. Still, well done! Such a pretty voice!
Very simply, beautifully and sensitively sung! This exquisite song, in the high Russian romantic style, was written in 1912 when Rachmaninoff was living and working as an orchestra conductor in Moscow, many years before he came to America.
This piece sounds good when you are alone in home. It isn't too good if you listen to it on concert, because there's too much noise and people's aura. I don't know but I like this version the most cause' It's played on grand piano, and I love singer's soft voice. I wish I could listen to it sitting by the lake in the night, listening to the sound of waves and nature.
Belle interprétation

The piano accompaniment (rubato) tells me: "the voice/singer is more important than the music itself"... agogics have to be ORGANIC.
