If you think about that last step the factoring by grouping is actually just GCF. Factoring a 3x+1 out of each term. I like how factoring and math in general is all connected. Now I just need to find one of these hot math girls.

@ev685 Because the 2 outside of the bracket is the greatest common factor and that goes with the answer. You need parentheses to factor out the trinomial. He probably didn't have to use brackets in the final answer, but probably not to confuse the number on the outside (the 2) not to distribute to the first term, but you still should get the same answer.
