Gmail was hot stuff back then when just avaialbe to users by invitation. Although I lived in Australia, I received an invite from an online friend in the States. My mates were like OMG you have a Gmail, get me an invite quick! Haha, now I somehow stick to hotmail with Gmail used for storage only.

I think this time Google has a chance to really compete with Facebook for two reasons, the quality of the experience delivered within the social network and that is integrally related to the search engine results and the website itself.
