i am gonna pick one of these up soon for a boundary waters trip over here in mn! but i wanna know when we are going to get a review of the staple gun!!!
Nutn, would you recommend this over the Cold Steel Trailmaster? Both seem to be about the same weight, size and price, and both have synthetic sheaths now. Which would you go with? Answer if you can, if not no worries dude, I know you're maxed out! Peace!
Outstanding knife and review! A wonderful fitting tribute to Ron Hood, may he Rest in Peace! I think I would molle that sheath onto my ruck and carry it with me there. Awesome!
Probably the 3rd time I have watched this review. My Cold Steel SRK just isn't cutting it as a heavy duty survival knife. Great bushcraft and survival knife but not as capable as a bigger blade. Defiantly thinking about ordering this. The weight on it is insane how light it is and I can put a Firesteel and a Swiss Army Knife in the sheath. Awesome review Nutn. Take care and stay safe man.
Nutn, debating between the hoodlum and ESEE Junglas (saw too many RTAK II breaking vids) do you think the Junglas is a better blade than the RTAK II both are 1095, the hoodlum is 5160? this is going to be my first big woods blade... buck has a lifetime warranty against defect, ESEE states lifetime guarantee against abuse and breakage... sheath does not really play a factor.
@jonkari33 With the money I saved not getting an ESEE Junglass, I got two RTAK 2's, and have yet to see any chips or breakages. As far as the Hoodlum... I'd want one just to have it... at half the weight of the RTAK2/Junglass, I'm not having "big blade withdrawals" when I leave my RTAK2 behind for a less-than-2 day trip.
Get the ESEE if it makes you feel better, by all means... confidence in your tool/weapon makes all the difference. :)
You keep talking about the weight of the knife and I have to ask because I havent done really any backpacking (I camp out of a canoe mostly) Is the difference between this knife and say your Ontario knife really enough to be noticeable when you are hiking to your camp location?
@BUCKrub91 While the weight from this knife to another may not be that large or noticeable, he focuses on weight for the sake of carrying a lighter load. When you go backpacking, you could be carrying up to 70 different items, tools, equipment, etc. If each of those weighs 4 or 5 ounces over a lighter offering that could do the same job, then youre could be carrying 10 more pounds than you need to be. A few ounces doesnt seem like much, but it really adds up quick.
Got my Hoodlum in the mail this week...(Amazon $116.) ...
Man Nutin you called it right, I love this thing..!! As a long time knife collector, I call it a near perfect large blade survival knife. Can't seem to put it down.
Only thing that took me off guard is that the knife does not snap into the poly insert of the nylon sheath.
Just added a Hoodlum to my Christmas list ....... Now if Momma don't freak out because of it's size. She already shot me down on the M&P AR-15 22lr. Oh well.
Another great review! I do not like that notch in the blade at all, It will probably be responsible for many of the failures of the blade. You pointed it out, the sheath was the deal breaker. I really hope they fix that.
Look on amazon. $88 bucks right now. Ive been looking at this knife for a long time and could never pull the trigger on it because of the $150 price tag. I almost fell over when I seen it for half price. Awesome review! this is probably the 4th time Ive watched this. RIP Ron Hood. Take care Nutn.
@megalizardfreak I used a trail master for years, until a buddy introduced me to a decent (full tang) kukri. The trail master has stayed in the drawer ever since. The extra weight, as well as the blade curvature, extra length and profile of the kukri blade splits wood better, chops better, and clears brush way better.
If you go with a kurki, you'll probably find the trail master becomes little more than dead weight.
@megalizardfreak the kukri design (curved) just makes it more 'interesting' when you get closer to the ground. I choose the kukri where i'm doing a lot of chopping and not much splitting (shelter creation, clearing) and the hoodlum for fire and other camp duties. I've also found the thickness of the cold steel kukri to be a lot better for battoning compared to the ka-bar kukri. Hope this helps.
@AussiePreppers Completely agree, my philosophy exactly!! The Hoodlum let's you carry a folding saw, flint/magnesium fire starter, multi-tool, mini-blade AND Hoodlum for same weight as lightweight axes..... OH YEA!!!
Hey NutnFancy Really great vids. Ya reviewed for the thousandth time this week "Big knives dont suck!" Placed an order for the RTAK II I loved how you utlized this hardware on your trip. Like my last post, "Keep on Rocking!"
Thanks for the review. I bought 2 a month before Ron passed. For the price and versatility I made a great choice. The sheath was the deal cincher. Getting a HIGH QUALITY sheath is rare when purchasing knives. Thanks again for your review.
I love people that complain about long videos, but seem to watch the whole video because they know every word nutn said. If you don't like the videos go make your own and then you can talk. Great review nutn. I just did a kayak trip in the everglades and used this the whole time. I personally loved it.
nutn, this was a great vid. its beautiful blade, and a great thing ron left us with, along with so much more. It always make me sad when we lose knifemakers, but they leave us with a large portion of themselves in things they created. Thanks for the review, thanks for the memorial of a great man. God bless.
Nutnfancy, stop chopping trees with a knife ! ;-P.I know you love the big knives but use an axe and you will know the difference.Practice with those axes and you''ll get better at soon enough. And then..you will appreciate the axe a lot.
@555Nato watch Nutn's philosophical video "Why Big Knives Don't Suck" and he explains why he isn't so big on axes. Also, I think he also does this because it is a good means to test a knife, so he (and by extension, us) will know how it would perform if necessary in a real survival situation.
@AirForceAce3571 ,I've seen that video. To each their own.But an axe or hatchet is so much more versatile as many of the big knife crowd know.I like the Junglas and Becker-9 myself(but still am open to reality). But you can whittle, make shavings or cut wood with a GB wildlife hatchet so much better/easier than with a large blade. You can choke up to the axe head, using one hand, giving you a lot of cutting power and control.Plus that a quality axe has an edge as sharp as a knife.Serious stuff
@555Nato Fair enough my friend. It sounds like the axe works good for you, and if it does, I say go for it! Personally, I don't do as heavy woodwork as Nutn or you may do in the woods so a medium-big knife (5-7 inch varieties) works better for me. Like you said to each their own and both methods have pros & cons to them. Peace.
@AirForceAce3571 ,yeah if the 5-7 inch blade works well enough for you then be happy with it. like i said like my Junglas too.But when cutting some wood ,the axe is really effective though it might not have he coolness factor for some.I do like them. And he talks about the big knife as a weapon.I can tell that an axe will stop any aggressor instantly.Which is not always the case with knife stabs and slashes.
@AirForceAce3571 ,I think his videos are way too long.He started with the 10 minutes videos. These days he has like the "Why Big Knives Don't Suck" taking 40 minutes to prove a point which he didnt prove anyhting to me only finding arguments to support his love for large knives. And the weight of a GB wildlife hatchet or SFA is not heavier than a Junglas.Did you notice that he doesnt show the Jnglas anymore because of this silly behaviour?Crap behaviour.
@555Nato I don't think he was trying to "prove" anything by that vid. To me, it seemed he was trying to explain why he feels the way he does. Second, if you don't like the long videos, the solution is simple: Don't watch! since you don't sub anyway, that shouldn't be much of a stretch for ya. Next!
@AirForceAce3571 ,A machete plus a 4 inch blade or a hatchet plus a 4 inch blade depending on the environment is always much more useful than a large knife.Even Jeff Randall will tell you this.He advocates cheap machetes like the tramontina above the Junglas.Doesnt mean big knives are useless .But come on,this Nutnfancy, what's his real name anyway,is just a big knife lover
Ron Hood was a great man... who designed great knives... I have the Fehrman Hoodhunter, which was a prelude to this knife, and i love it... I wanna get his anaconda and the other designs he created...
Also, while he had prostate cancer, what was the ultimate cause of death was a heart attack that he suffered in his sleep. We will miss you Ron!
@Darkstars812 ,he already did,but he took the video offline because of some small quarrel he had with the guys of ESEE.It was nothing but you know how people are..
This is why I watch nutnfancy, and this video is proof to everyone the type of man he is and what he represents. He knows that a great man has passed and his honor and memories must be addressed, and he understands that nothing short of excellence is acceptable. Ron Hood is an outstanding person and a wonderful human being that we are unfortunate to have lost. The man was taken from us, but his memories will never leave and his attitude is admirable. Rest in beloved honor Ron Hood
Hey every one Nutn included i would like to point out that this knife is also available on his web site at survival.com. It would be nice to support His Widow Karen and son Jesse by purchasing this knife from there online catalog. It might be a little more there then some other online sources at 180 but that money is well spent.
This is why i love your review vids nutn', you tell it as it, no matter if its good or bad you always give a balance of Pos and Neg. This Blade will be on my to get list, hikes season here very soon.
Thoughts and prayers to Ron Hoods family and friends, your intro was Honourable and respectful, so kudos to you Nutn' Mr R Hood was a champ in the outdoor world and will be sadly missed.
Thank for the great review on this knife. Ive seen all the large survival knife reviews youve made and i must say that this video came at the right time. I was very close to buying the RTAK-II whit a minor minus in my mind... the weight. This knife beat that minus and im happy to say that this is the best knife ive ever had in hand. Not that i got a huge collection tho. This will sure serve me well on my hikes at the sweedish and norwegian forrests. Keep it real dude!
@GoBearsW I've got both and they are both good knives. But if I could only have one, I'd keep the Hoodlum. There is just something about this blade, I would never part with it.
@HatchetJacks50 I saw the clip where it broke, and if I encounter the same (looked like fresh wood) and it brakes I'll use the awesome lifetime warranty. I try to go for dead wood that I can cut with my sawvivor saw. You sure have a top dollar blade, glad to know you use it! Thanks for the comment!
nutn, great job on this video! The past month I've not had much time to watch your videos cause I was moving and starting a new job. But just got to watch this one and you did an excellent job.
And now that I'm in MI instead of the fail state of NY, all of the dangerous things you review I can actually purchase!
@nutnfancy Thank you for your words nutn. I agree. Thanks again for all that you do. Nutnfancy is more to me then just a youtuber or a gear junkie. Nutnfancy is a constant reminder that we should make each day count and soak it all in. Thanks brother. Hope all is well.
@tdegazio Hoodlum is an all-around big bushcraft knife. Trailmaster is a beefy large knife so it will chop and baton better than Hoodlum. It depends on your style, your needs and what you like in a large knife. I went for the Hoodlum because it's balanced and light so that I can pair it up with another tool like a multi-tool.
I have been saving up for a large esee knife, and seeing how the steel performed and the overall package is awesome with this blade, I am ready to pick one of these up instead. Thanks for the review as always.
Ron is one of the big influences in my life... My main field blade is the Hoodhunter which he designed with Fehrman, which is essentially a hoodlum, made with 3V steel. So many are going to miss you man,
Very well done! Ron would be proud of this video. You did a wonderful job on this video and testing the Hoodlum. What an awesome blade and the edge seems to be amazing for the way it still cuts after you thumped on it.
Ron will be surely missed He was and will continue to be a great teacher through the legacy he has left behind. God's Speed and I offer my deepest condolences to his family.
@IvanKesja "not spend over 70 dollars on any knife because no piece of steel witha handle is worth more" That's purely opinion, man. Apparently, all the effort and experience that go into designing/making knives isn't part of the deal?
I can't believe that Ron died. I just saw him interviewed. Some of the first videos I favorited and watched on YouTube were Ron Hood's wilderness instruction videos.
Nutn, I won't buy a knife without your endorsement. You steered me right on the Fallkniven A1. I will buy this knife on your recommendation and in memory of this great man, Ron Hood.
I knew I was getting one of these when I first saw it in your shot show video. I loved the segment featuring Ron Hood. The guy just seemed to love life, and had a well though out philosophy about knives for outdoors. I never even heard of him before your video, but I liked him and remembered the video because of him (no offense). You did one hell-of-a-classy tribute. Rock on RON HOOD!
Oh yeah, Every time I watch one of these reviews, I buy something. Dude, you're killin me:)LOL
Finally met the Hoodlum in person. Looked and felt like a magnificiently designed, and excecuted wilderness (keen factory edge!). It is now high on my list. Starting to become more availabe too! Thanks for the review and testing efforts.
thank you for getting to this review, i've been waiting for it ever since your shot show vid w/ Ron. i was ecstatic when i saw it in my Nutn' vid que, i'm still happy to see it, but i have to say it totally sucks to hear about Ron's passing. :(
OK Nutn you have to pick one (I can’t afford both) for kicking around in the woods of Western NC. Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri SK 5 or Buck Hoodlum Ron Hood? I do 3 day backing packing and day hiking stuff here in the Mountains.
Might I suggest this vid be added to your "BEST Large Survival Knives" playlist. Sentiment aside, I believe this blade on it's merits deserves it's spot in that collection.
Surprised such a great knife, and knife designer, missed out on such obvious improvements... the lack of any automatic retention of the knife in the sheath, the awful looking thumb grooves, etc.. RIP Ron.
I've become a big fan over the past few months but this is my first YouTube post.
Thank you for the honesty and passion you bring to tactical and wilderness gear.
I am surprised that you haven't reviewed any Bark River knives; particularly the Bravo1, Bravo2, STS-5 and STS-8. I would also like to see a review of the Bahco Laplander Folding Saw.
Very tasteful. I'm always impressed how you can delegate criticism constructively and with respect to the product and their designers. Up in Canada we don't have the pricing competition you enjoy in the States, and I've always been an mid size axe packer. but this is definately a knife I'll be looking for in the under $150 range for my first and only survival blade. And thats saying somthing, because when I buy a knife, I commit to it for life or until its worn out.
What a great way to remember's a man's legacy. I really like the effect in the beginning with the picture of the log in the background, and then the knife thrown into the log and small videos around. Thank you for sharing and best wishes for the family and friends of Ron.
Excellent work Nutnfancy, a beautiful tribute to an obviously very talented, loved fellow - I'm positive he would be proud. Thinking back to the SHOT show videos you showed, I remember how easy going he seemed. Tragedies like this make every second you spent with someone seem all the more noteworthy and important; it's something we can all relate to, and we will all eventually succumb to, yet it is always such a massive, massive heart break. May he rest in peace.
Yeah i agree with armed civilian556.You're a super role model bro. That means alot in these times. America has lost so much of its core values, fundementals, and morals. But not you. No sir. I hope you realize how much you've done not only in the gear world, but as a role model to society. You show your qualities without trying, and thats a great thing and all people should be able to give off an essence of fortitude and morality as you do. Keep fightin the good fight bro.
Another EXCELLENT review... I had the honor of meeting Ron recently at the blade show in Atlanta. We talked a while about this knife and other things. What a GREAT person. I have learned so much through his videos. The Hoodlum will be my next knife. He will be missed. R.I.P Brother.... I recently put up a short tribute on my channel if anyone wants to view it.
Never have I been more proud to be apart of this project created by you nutnfancy. Long live TNP! Great review in honor of Ron. Hope you get a chance to read this in all your lack of spare time brother.
Wow, I realized Ron watched and commented on my video on the Hoodlum...Mine wasn't a glowing review so we disagreed a bit on it. But in a very civil way. I just can't believe that I didn't realize it was his Youtube user name. I wasted a great opportunity. Rest In Peace Ron. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Never was a big fan... However this struck me like a sledgehammer when I heard of his death... Feels like I lost a brother now... A bushcrafting brother I've never met.
I would like to second the comments made by ArmedCivilian556 Nutn... your review of the knife is fantastic, the outdoor videography is extraordinary however I was most impresssed with the words and thoughts you articulated relative to Ron and his philosophy with honor and respect. The Hoodlum is the culmination of Ron's life experiences relative to the blade and the outdoors. Let's all celebrate the life and work of Ron Hood...
This video, Nutnfancy, really honors one of the great knife designers and outdoorsmen of our era. Ron Hood gave immeasurably to the outdoor community. You done Ron proud, Nutnfancy. Rest in peace, brother Ron...
Is it weird that i get such an immense satisfaction when i see that 3 foot log split? I was sitting at my computer thinking "Yea, get some!". Awesome review nutn, I'm sure Ron would be very proud of this review of his knife. It's sad to see such an amazing knife designer go, but his philosophies and practices will forever be encapsulated in this knife. I plan on getting one (maybe two?) in the near future to add to the collection.
It may have been on purpose. In cold temperatures, the pressure inside containers will drop and in some cases may prevent the product from working. This is why butane lighters have such a hard time in cold weather and why you may see nutn or someone else put the fuel tank for a camp stove on coals.
I want one so bad but they are too pricey for my poor hillbilly ass : (

555Nato 6 months ago
Ron Hood was a great man... who designed great knives... I have the Fehrman Hoodhunter, which was a prelude to this knife, and i love it... I wanna get his anaconda and the other designs he created...
Also, while he had prostate cancer, what was the ultimate cause of death was a heart attack that he suffered in his sleep. We will miss you Ron!
Quoiyaien 6 months ago
It was prostrate cancer. Not to take away from the man. But when can we see a review of that esee junglas.

@Darkstars812 ,he already did,but he took the video offline because of some small quarrel he had with the guys of ESEE.It was nothing but you know how people are..

how did Ron Hood die?
sk8terboy860 6 months ago

It might be a little more there then some other online sources at 180 but that money is well spent.
onlyinthedark1982 7 months ago
Love the leg bone being used as a backstop in case the knife slips or blows unexpectedly through the dry sapling. Er... try another position? :-)
Love your reviews, Nutn. I buy all my knives with your recommendations. Haven't been displeased yet and I think that's amazing cuz I'm hard to please.

Someone please respond.

@GoBearsW I've got both and they are both good knives. But if I could only have one, I'd keep the Hoodlum. There is just something about this blade, I would never part with it.
AussieMark909 7 months ago
@HatchetJacks50 I saw the clip where it broke, and if I encounter the same (looked like fresh wood) and it brakes I'll use the awesome lifetime warranty. I try to go for dead wood that I can cut with my sawvivor saw. You sure have a top dollar blade, glad to know you use it! Thanks for the comment!

@nutnfancy Thank you for your words nutn. I agree. Thanks again for all that you do. Nutnfancy is more to me then just a youtuber or a gear junkie. Nutnfancy is a constant reminder that we should make each day count and soak it all in. Thanks brother. Hope all is well.

hoodlum vs. trailmaster everything considered? please! need some help
tdegazio 7 months ago
@tdegazio Hoodlum is an all-around big bushcraft knife. Trailmaster is a beefy large knife so it will chop and baton better than Hoodlum. It depends on your style, your needs and what you like in a large knife. I went for the Hoodlum because it's balanced and light so that I can pair it up with another tool like a multi-tool.
GJian71 7 months ago
@GJian71 well i always carry my saw or axe, so i dont really need it for chopping, more for splitting. however i like the new trailmaster sheaths..

Amen on tightening the blade retention in the sheath. Hoodlum slipped out and cut me as soon as I popped the snap! I still dig the blade!

@IvanKesja "not spend over 70 dollars on any knife because no piece of steel witha handle is worth more" That's purely opinion, man. Apparently, all the effort and experience that go into designing/making knives isn't part of the deal?

I knew I was getting one of these when I first saw it in your shot show video. I loved the segment featuring Ron Hood. The guy just seemed to love life, and had a well though out philosophy about knives for outdoors. I never even heard of him before your video, but I liked him and remembered the video because of him (no offense). You did one hell-of-a-classy tribute. Rock on RON HOOD!
Oh yeah, Every time I watch one of these reviews, I buy something. Dude, you're killin me:)LOL

It may have been on purpose. In cold temperatures, the pressure inside containers will drop and in some cases may prevent the product from working. This is why butane lighters have such a hard time in cold weather and why you may see nutn or someone else put the fuel tank for a camp stove on coals.
