Looking at Top Spin 2 and Virtua Tennis 3 I have to say that Tennis games still just don't feel like Tennis.

They are too arcadey.

They have to make it harder (require skill) to hit the ball in, rather than just push the A button.

They have to make it more strategic. Add stamina bars.

In real Tennis there are winners. The rallys are much shorter and there is much much MUCH more thinking involved.

They still have a WAYS to go before they can even come close to real tennis.

I've been watching the top spin 2 posted by val51 & as much as I like virtua tennis 3 I feel top spin is more realistic. In VT3 I've never hit the ball out when trying to, it always stays in the court. But in TS2 it looks like to can. Which in turn make it more realistic.

This is clearly the best tennis game ever made. Its realistic, and u get the feeling as if ur gonna run straight into the crowd on close shots :) Only down-side is the multiplayer options, its not good at all. U cant pick who u want to play against. If u wanna play with a friend for example its close to impossible to get into the same game as him. Hope they fix this in top spin 3 which is comming out @ 2008. I give this game a 10/10. Best xbox360 game ever, untill TS3.

This is not realistic I have this game and I wish I have never bought it The only thing they got right is the serves on some of the players not all of them. They all don't have signature ground strokes like In VT3. Look how Roddick was hitting powerful ground strokes in no mans lane that makes no sense so unrealistic. only thing that is great is the graphics

You can still hit "good" shots from nomansland in real tennis if you have the skill that high ranking atp players have, but it is very strategically and tactically disadvantageous to do so as shown here by an IGN reviewer that knows squat about tennis tactics. If you use proper footwork and shot selection, you'll see that topspin's gameplay is actually more true to the real sport.

Whoever is playing Roddick is moving very badly. He is hitting very poor approach shots and is then rushing the net and getting eaten up by a pretty average baseliner. Also no risk shots and a slow serve? Some practice required here I think. 8)

I agree, but look at the ign logo. This is just a ign reviewer who probably knows extremely little about proper tennis tactics. He plays in no-mans-land, continuously hits down the line shots, and obviously has no clue how to work points. He's got no rithym either.

but remember, this is just an ign reviewer. We cannot expect him to understand the strategy and tactics involved in tennis. He pretty much had no gameplan. This is why top spin 2 on gba got a bad review because the timing (their big gripe) works if you use proper tennis principles, but if you don't, good luck.

The gameplay for topspin 2 is horrid compared to the first topspin. They fucked everything up. Just to it a drop volley you have to pull the left trigger and The Y button. It was so much easier when and more fan/gamer friendly when all you had to do was time the trigger. The game is much morer complicated.
