Adam knows where everything is at on her plate because that's the system they use to teach all of them he and didn't hear her clang her silverware had she picked up the fork....He has probably taught alot of other students before her.
There is a website about how they did things back when she went to Iowa School for the blind..They were strict and everything was systematically done
@dinosammy1 Yes he knows everything and has a developed sense of touch and hearing. And i agree with you on the fact that people, especially teachers had to be strict with blind students. They taught them discipline. And Adam is fully right not to pity Mary.He wouldn't help her if he felt sorry for her.She just has to live again like a normal and seeing girl.
theluvbug1988 I think he heard her eating with her hands (but i dont know how it sounds) and the man who owns the place probably told him where the peas are and utensils and such
Adam is a professional, thats why hes a teacher. when he went blind, he was trained well, and thats why he is training everyone else. yes i admit at times he looks like hes looking....thats probably just the actors mistake. but when the question of how does he know when she does this or that. he is aware through sounds, touch.... he became sensitive to every sense.
I'm visually and hearing impaired (a.k.a. deaf/blind) and I must say...this episode is VERY helpful and encouraging to me! Soon I too, will be traveling for training just as Mary did however, my training will be for my blindness AND my deafness! I imagine it will be hard for me to say goodbye to my Mom as it was hard for Mary and her Pa.
I love how Adam is. Well, all of the LHOP men who I've liked. Him, Albert, Almanzo, Charles...wide range :) Other shows I mostly want to make out with the guys and do bad things to them ;) This show the guys are hot but I want to marry them...So sweet
@theluvbug1988 Adam confuses me. I never know when he is seeing and not seeing. Some scenes he looks like he is not blind, while others its the complete oppossite. However, he is suppose to be blind in this epi.
@Emotional2000 he confuses me too. well i guess they didn't think it through very hard. also i pretty much love you for putting up all these episodes haha. i love this show :)
@Emotional2000 It's not confusing. It's senses. He could tell she was using her hands for eating if he did not here the clinking of one of the utensils that were given to her. And remember, Adam has been in her shoes. And he has been through every thing that she has gone through or like any other student he had.
@theluvbug1988 I think its because Adam was blind for quite a time and got use to using his other senses such as hearing. Blind people as i have heard developpe their other senses and are more aware of things because the brain gets trained with these other senses. The sense that people use the most is their sight, so much that we are dependent on it. We normally dont use our sense of smelling for instance as much...anyway i think thats why Adam could tell that Mary was eating with her hands :)
@theluvbug1988 a blind persons other senses are more heightened so perhaps since he was "blind" he could hear when she moved her hands and knew or sensed that she picked the food up off the plate. Or yes bad editing :)
@theluvbug1988 Adam knows where everything is at on her plate because that's the system they use to teach all of them he and didn't hear her clang her silverware had she picked up the fork....He has probably taught alot of other students before her.
There is a website about how they did things back when she went to Iowa School for the blind..They were strict and everything was systematically done
@theluvbug1988 He'd been blind virtually his entire life and could probably tell she didn't pick up her silverware because he knows what it should sound like. People who have been blind a really long time often have an acute sense of hearing, more so than sighted people, since they have to depend on it more. Sometimes they can even tell what kind of face you're making by the sound of your voice or the way you breathe.
@theluvbug1988 I think he knew that she was eating with her fingers because he didn't hear the utensils. I also think it's just intuition, that he knows she's not going to eat correctly the first time because of her attitude so far.
@theluvbug1988 When you are blind or lose one of your five senses -- in some way -- the others that you do have work for the one you lost. So in this case, Adam uses hearing to help him. If she picked up the fork and used it, it would have made a noise. He didn't hear anything, so he knew she wasn't using her fork. [This is just my opinion. The writers could have made a mistake.]
LOL! @ 8:03-4 Charles said that I can use the wood....but Jonathan hadn't said anything about the wood yet. Now, you see how many times I've seen this epi...lol.
@PurpleRain1994 Adam has been blind since childhood. When Mary realizes he's blind too it makes her realize that she can do a lot more with her life than she thought possible. She gets the biggest smile. Even when Mary gets better, she's still scared and feels limited. When she knows Adam is blind, the fact that he's a teacher and had done so much for her and other students drops a lot of those limits she thought she had.
@PurpleRain1994 he used to, but he got a concation, then he got hurt from explosives and got his eyesight back, but he's use to being blind and knows sutff.
@giniethesinger Yes so do I.Mary and adam are softer, they rarely argue.Almanzo and laura are well assorted but laura is not easy to live with just like almanzo.
The first part is soooooooooooooooooooo sad! I love the little house on the prairie series! I love this episode......its really heartwarming..............Thanks for uploading!
Losing your hearing is devastating. I took a 2 year program ini sign language and interpreting. I learned that you rely so much on your hearing. You can tell a person's personality, how they are talking, their language they are speaking in, etc just from hearing them. Of course, losing your sight must be just as devastating. I wonder if it's harder if you were sighted and then you lost your sight or if you are born blind.
Something I don't understand; from the books you get the impression that Mary wrote the letters to her family herself... but... if she wrote braile how could they READ it?
She didnt write the letters in braile. she wrote the letters using the ruler, that is what here Ma and dad where talking about when they got her letter.
I love Adam. I have zero patience with the helpless thing as well. Nobody is perfect, and everyone has to learn to adapt to their conditions. This starts out very sad, but turns into a remarkable episode.
Adam's awesome. In my opinion, Adam and Mary are a better couple than Laura and Almanzo.
Adam's got that tough love thing going on and he knows just how far to push her to make her come out of that rut she's in. I like them together. Wish there were a lot more episodes of them together in the series.
While I personally like Laura/Almanzo slightly better, I see where you're coming from. Mary/Adam were a more mature couple who took things more seriously, while Laura/Almanzo were portrayed as two crazy young kids in love and getting way ahead of themselves when they courted.
I absolutely agree... but the verse goes... and God said "let there be light". I also like how Mary realizes that no matter how bad we think our situation is there is always someone who is worse off. Like the little girl who lost her parents. Very humbling.
Thank you!I'm italian so I hadn't understood well the verse.I think it's the Genesis' beginning, isn't it?I agree with you about Mary too.You know, I was very concerned in this episode because I had a uncle who was blind,he had lost his sight at the age of 3 for a disease, but he had a great personality, he graduated at university and went to teach in a school. And then,he married a blind woman (!),and they had a child (not blind), who's about my age.
...my uncle died some years ago, and I remember he was a fantastic, gentle and intelligent person, so...these scenes made me think a lot about him and his life.
Adam is beautiful....& as a blind & intiutive person, he knows exactly how far he can & needs to push Mary. It's breathtaking to watch him....& them together.
But actualy hearing is the most important sense, becuase you usualy hear danger, not see it. You hear cars, you hear the smoke alarm, you hear people screaming.
But sight is the greatest sense, becuase it is everything. I would hate to be blind.
But you can learn to Imagine, Make up new sights in your mind. But it would never be like the real thing. It's awfull.
Agreed. While neither is pleasant and I *certainly* would miss music horribly, deafness is somewhat less debilitating than blindness, because the information about the world the eyes provide is far more comprehensive.
And when are YouTube going to fix the comment system? Half of the time you try to reply to someone else's comment but it just ends up at the top of the thread, totally out of context.
Hi gosh1994 and thanks for sharing... And I would have definetly agree with you... I value my eyesight over all my other senses. I really don't know what I would do if I couldn't see anymore. My guess, is that I would be upset/heartbroken as Mary was in this epi.

Learning to cope with a bad condition such as blindness is never easy to begin with. And how does he expect her to clean up the mess if she can't see where it is?
I have a question: not relevant to this clip but to another one the one where Mary's baby gets lost in the fire: doea this actually happen in the book?
Keep in mind that there'd been a period of time that had passed between her going blind and being sent to the school. But you could argue one of the reasons he was so hard on her was because he'd done the same things and had to reteach her how to live a normal life.
