I have lived in this base for a week, been all over the place (the new atc tower, officers mess, gym, etc). Never got a flight in a tucano but a pilot who was taking me into the plane told us that he would give us a flight , but health and safety crap...
in order to be a fast jet pilot you need to be able to multi task, which some candidates find hard to do.it also helps if you have been in the air training corps which shows the selection board you have an interest in aviation.a sound education a levels or a degree gets you on the application form.
there are aircrew that wears glasses so you dont have to have perfect vision as long as you meet raf requirements.
it takes as long 4 years to be an operational pilot after basic flying school.
@62del Old pilots wear glasses, you need perfect vision. By perfect i mean that if you went to an optician they would say you have 20/20 vision, maybe some tiny 0.25 astigmatism but nothing you need glasses for.
@tarkinfish I know for me my vision is still brilliant, but now bright neon lights are brighter (kinda like you have watery eyes and it goes all shiny) but that should help see small specs by magnifying them, I hope to become a fast pilot one day :D
Used to live there, every morning the Tucano would wake me up as it went past my house on the base, hopefully ill be flying one of these past my old house in a few years.
@voyagesdedavid 1. Mute. 2. Mute and open a second music video. 3. Mute and turn on radio. 4. Dont watch. 5. Upload a better video with your own choice of music for people to rip to bits.
@voyagesdedavid given the author appears to be in the early stages of fast jet training they could be anywhere between 18 to 24 years old, they probably like the band and there is a volume control available.
Great Video unfortunately i didn't meet the health requirements for a pilot in the RAF (Glasses) but i'm in as a Regiment Gunner so i have a sort of contact with my passion, aviation! :)
When I was a lad I won a cadet competition to fly in one of these beauties during a ATC camp in lynton on ouse. Absolutely the coolest thing I got to do and I greatly respect the pilots who fly in them. I understand I'm one of a tiny few of civvies who ever got to go in a military training one.. I'd like to say thank you . The finalists (myself inc) were asked why we would like to go in one. The two others gave upright answers but i said that i would "utterly just simply love to" and I got to go
RUINED BY PATHETIC BACK GROUND CRAP !TONE DEAF SHOULD BE SENT TO A NUT HOUSE!WHO ON EARTH WANTS TO HEAR THESE MORONS WHO ARE TONE DEAF! RAPPERS ?THE C FELL OFF THE PRINTER!

@martyncw. weight on wheels switch is in the nose wheel strut. Throttle won't go lower than ground idle unless weight on wheels swith engages. Prior to start pilot must check full movement of the throttle.
These Tucs were made in Ireland! They're different to the Embraer Tuc - theyr'e stronger and have a 1150hp Garret engine instead of the 750hp PT6. I've flown both and the RAF Tuc is way better.
@johnnyjohn0099 chances of you getting fast jet training these days are slim. 20 places per year for the forseeable future and on top of that you'll need to make sure you've got the academic quals and brains to pass the apititude tests and THEN pass all the entry stuff. Or you could drop 80 grand getting PPL and CPL with little chance of a job at the end of it.
@johnnyjohn0099 Balls of steel and the ability to use Google. If you can't use a computer effectively there's not much chance the RAF is going to let you loose in a £40 million desktop with wings.
@InkyNibIllustrations becoming a commercial pilot today is getting much harder aswell. Most, if not all academies have just upped the entry requirements to 3 A levels of which 2 must be Maths and Physics. However, 99% of successful applicants also have a degree in aerospace engineering. It is much harder compared to 20 years ago when the RAF was much bigger and the commercial aviation industry wasn't being raped by a recession.
I am thinking about joining the RAF after University. Will they let me fly fast jets with heart mild heart murmur. I have talked to my doctors about it and it is nothing to worry about it's just merely annoying. I have never had to give up physical activity, I play rugby and regally work out.
@Louisthefish23 - I'd make the effort to check on that if I were you. I'm fairly certain no military aviation organisation will recruit any aircrew member who has a colour vision defect - no matter how minor.
@TheHbomb94 : Its technical, but there is a reason for doing that: You have to check that the throttle has full range before starting, including reverse thrust. Reverse thrust is only available on the ground (for obvious reasons) as detected by a small switch on the nosewheel. Sometimes the tail sags and the switch on the nosewheel is unmade, necessitating a 'raise of the tail' to remake the switch.
How does the Tucano compare to the hawk? how does BFJT prepare you for the hawk? 124 hours is a lot of hours compared to other courses in the training system, why is it so long, what do you cover apart from basic handling skills, nav, emergencys??
This is 'Basic' Fast jet training and not 'Advanced' which would be in a BAE Hawk T1
