@MrKyleSchick height has nothing to do with being meaner its the heart of the DI that makes them mean..my 1st Sgt was a former DI he wasnt hard on them as much as 1 of his Jr. DI's who used to grab and throw the recruits around practically..Bootcamp is all 1 big mind fuck and thats what the DI's do is play mind games to test you and build you up the Marine way
I got a chance to go to San Diego and meet some of the drill instructors on the base with my friend, a drill instructor himself, they were pretty chill when they talked to me, then they turned around and got all over the new marines, even off duty my friend messed wih them if they got out of line, I still want to join the marines though!!!

that DI reminds me of me in my DI position over the summer at my military school. of course that DI WWWWAAAAAAAYYYYYYY outdoes me. but i had the same attitude and voice.
The reason you see DIs constantly criticizing and degrading the recruits even if theyve done something right is because they are supposed to break down the recruit mentally and physically, on the battlefield, even if you do something right the enemies not gonna stop shooting at you. DIs instill hate into the recruits, so much that when the recruits are on the firing range, DIs arent permitted to be there because a recruit with a rifle is likely to shoot his DI.
They pick on him because its all a game to the di's. They are required to make marines and only pussies cry when someone's not dying or they aren't spewing blood from their arms and legs.

I took the OCS route through Quantico, VA over 40 years ago and we received our share of being screamed at. The Staff NCOs were all former DIs from San Diego or PI so their technique was well rehearsed. The trick is not to take the yelling personally because they are evaluating how you function under stress – rarely are they really mad at you. When it did happen to me, this was an opportunity to show them I could take it.
DI's are humans just like us. They poop, they picked there nose as kids and even colored out side of the lines as kids. You have to be smart in bootcamp. It's not all about muscles and tough guy status.

In all reality the reason drill instructors yell at recruits so intensively is to train them to be able to deal with stress. That way when they are in war they don't freeze up when dealing with a stressful situation. Sure he may have cried here but I bet now this guy is much tougher than anyone else not in the military. Id rather pout and get my ass whooped by a drill instructor instead of go to war and cry because I wasn't trained to deal with stress.
I went to boot in 99 my drill hat punched me out at the hump back for the crucible. cuz i didnt ask premission for water. i still had to hump back with empty canteens held upside down to show i never got any water. now i here all boot amps get stress cards. whaT A FUCKING JOKE.
I heard that as early as 1997/98, they were handing out stress cards. I remember when I got off the bus and onto the yellow footprints in 1996, a DI punched a recruit in the gut for bumping into him as he got off the bus. If they are using stress cards these days, it is a sick joke! Hell, just think, up to about 15 or 20 years ago, a DI was allowed to actually slap the shit out of a recruit and cuss him out for fucking up!

Then you'll get dishonorably discharged and maybe even a couple extra charges that'll have you in jail for some time. After all that, good luck finding a job with a dishonorable discharge on your record.

Well, not everyone becomes a mindless machine or an asshole after boot camp, it really depends on the person. Boot camp teaches discipline, a different kind than what your mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa have tought you...they all form you into the man you are today, but Drill Instructors form you into a Marine.

@ccccarla My grandpa told me he just went in knowing they would be trying to make him snap under pressure and give up but he was a hard headed man before joining and he said it pissed the DI off more that he couldn't make him break and cry than it pissed him off the DI talking to him like that.

The reason you see DIs constantly criticizing and degrading the recruits even if theyve done something right is because they are supposed to break down the recruit mentally and physically, on the battlefield, even if you do something right the enemies not gonna stop shooting at you. DIs instill hate into the recruits, so much that when the recruits are on the firing range, DIs arent permitted to be there because a recruit with a rifle is likely to shoot his DI.

Have you not heard the stories of soldiers over seas who help women and children receive medical help when the men in that country say if they come anywhere near a us soldier they will be stoned?
The soldiers who do these things volunteer to do them, because it's not just a job, it's a life style.

I took the OCS route through Quantico, VA over 40 years ago and we received our share of being screamed at. The Staff NCOs were all former DIs from San Diego or PI so their technique was well rehearsed. The trick is not to take the yelling personally because they are evaluating how you function under stress – rarely are they really mad at you. When it did happen to me, this was an opportunity to show them I could take it.

In all reality the reason drill instructors yell at recruits so intensively is to train them to be able to deal with stress. That way when they are in war they don't freeze up when dealing with a stressful situation. Sure he may have cried here but I bet now this guy is much tougher than anyone else not in the military. Id rather pout and get my ass whooped by a drill instructor instead of go to war and cry because I wasn't trained to deal with stress.

I went to boot in 99 my drill hat punched me out at the hump back for the crucible. cuz i didnt ask premission for water. i still had to hump back with empty canteens held upside down to show i never got any water. now i here all boot amps get stress cards. whaT A FUCKING JOKE.

I heard that as early as 1997/98, they were handing out stress cards. I remember when I got off the bus and onto the yellow footprints in 1996, a DI punched a recruit in the gut for bumping into him as he got off the bus. If they are using stress cards these days, it is a sick joke! Hell, just think, up to about 15 or 20 years ago, a DI was allowed to actually slap the shit out of a recruit and cuss him out for fucking up!

@rabsmiff - These are MARINE Drill Instructors. They teach combat skills for a living. And what happens when you kick one? He beats your ass. And if you do happen to put one down, the rest of them will come over to pulverize you in one mob of Marine Drill Instructors.
Then you'll get dishonorably discharged and maybe even a couple extra charges that'll have you in jail for some time. After all that, good luck finding a job with a dishonorable discharge on your record.

@rabsmiff - To teach them a lesson. They want the privilege of serving with the USMC and earn the title 'Marine', they're gonna do it the way other Marines want it done.
The whole point of the mob thing is to beat the idea into the recruits head. You do this wrong, you get attacked by unpleasant DI's. If all the DI's did was pat them on the hand and say no, do you think the recruit will listen? It's like a kid and a teacher. If the teacher is too nice, the student will do the same thing again.

Does this mean that the Services only wish to attract unthinking cretins...as this is how it appears. Isn't blind obedience very similar to the thinking behind Nazi ideaology? There seems to be millions of unthinking, gullible soldiers ripe for plucking by the Marines....rthere's an awful lot of ignorance out there.

It takes individual thought to make the choice of enlisting in any branch of the Military. The Military is a job...you do as your boss tells you too or else you get bitched at or fired (or in the Military's case....discharged). But since you think that it's ignorant to get ordered around by a higher ranking officer in the Military, then I guess everyone in the world is ignorant huh? There's always going to be someone to order you around, no matter where you are or what you do.

Idon't hate individual soldiers, and some I have met have been OK, although others like some ex-UK Paras I knew were definately affected for the worse by their army experiences, also some ex-soldiers actually believe they are superior to the taxpayers who fund the Services.

@TheGeneralHimself92 I accept what you are saying, there has to be order when weapons are being used anywhere on the planet, but this drilling/squarebashing method seems designed more to drive any sense of individuality or humanity out of the new soldiers: it's turning them into machines, not human beings with conciousness or sense of morality, which I feel is one of the most important factors regarding war crimes, historically and today.

Well, not everyone becomes a mindless machine or an asshole after boot camp, it really depends on the person. Boot camp teaches discipline, a different kind than what your mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa have tought you...they all form you into the man you are today, but Drill Instructors form you into a Marine.

Well, I am a professional cartoonist, with a unique style, and I draw exactly what I want, how I want to, witout anyone telling me how to draw my own cartoons. Any creative job allows the individual to do exactly what they want. I also need a lot of discipline to do this, but is entirely self-taught, and again no-one done this for me, it is all done be me alone, without outside help or interference.

I personally think that being a cartoonist [a civilian job, obviously] is better than being in the Military, but that's because I have no real interest in being ordered around by a system thought up by others.....I want to get through life using original thought, and that is why I am a cartoonist and not a soldier.
