  • It's so simple....don't give up.....don't ever give up

  • he said he would fight his brains out to be back the next year to give the award.. he died 3 months later. tears everytime. Rest In Peace Jimmy V you inspire everyday of my life.

  • my father died of cancer and when i saw this video i instantly broke down into tears, i don't understand how human beings could be heartless and dislike a video like this. Even if you are trying to joke or something like that its a really sick one.

  • RIP Jimmy Valvano

  • why would u dislike this those who dislike this SUCK!

  • One of the greatest human beings ever.

  • RIP Jimmy! You were truly an amazing person and its because of you so many other people have been helped and now live healthy lives. Thanks for your knowledge and sacrifice! Thoughts and prayers are always with your family!

  • I seen this when it originally aired, years later I went through nursing school and when things got tough, I would watch this speech. Truely inspiring..."Don't give up, don't ever give up"...just awesome....

  • 52 people are the guys accounts that was saying "30 seconds"

  • How could 52 people dislike this? I'm 37 years old and I watched this while I was in high school and remember exactly where I was when I watched this. That was the first time I was ever moved to tears as a young man. One of the greatest speeches of my lifetime!

  • Jimmy V, you just didn't light up a room, you engulfed the whole thing and everyone in it with happiness, courage, and hope. And for that, we are all eternally grateful. Rest in peace you remarkable man.

  • I have never watched this and not become a blubbering idiot afterwards. I type with tear-stained fingers.

  • 52 people have no soul

  • RIP JImmy V you are a great man

  • humanity has a long way to go if 52 people dont like this.... sadly 10 WILL have cancer at some point.. what a joke these people breathe the same air as we do

  • i pray for a cure for cancer and for the law enforcement community to destroy the military microwave machine that is killing innocent defensless and helpless americans

  • What a wonderful man and what a lasting legacy he has left for those in the fight against cancer. I hope to change many lives with the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation that was formed in honor of my son who survived late stage diagnosis. Wonderful man!

  • It's really sad to see all these people fighting about religion, who cares what you believe in or if you even believe in a god, that's not the point. Stop taking recognition away from a heartwarming speech and a great man... R.I.P. Jimmy...

  • If you dislike this, you should not be alive

  • Beautiful speach, I cry, I laugh, and I think about how much of a better place the world would be if everyone on the planet had an attitude like Jimmy V. RIP to a great man

  • im sorry i never met you but i cant thank the v foundation enough for saving my brother. he is now 35, has 2 kids and is happily married..... thank you soo much

  • Watching Coach K and Dickie V help Jim off the stage, practically carry him, is the sadest part of this video. RIP Jimmy

  • This speech made me laugh, think, and cry.

  • this is just a phenominal speech

  • what kind of person would dislike this video

  • Wow. It is so inspiring to see a selfless act from a dying man. Coach V was the real deal.

  • @xJulz23x

i have read almost all of your comments and they all disgust me. you are either one of those people whose goal is to bring christianity down or are simply just too lazy to deepen yourself in faith or think they are the best in the world. how do you not believe in any higher being, you need to go to a church service or something to understand what you are debating with everyone

  • How could you dislike this video???

  • Comment removed

  • Saved my dad and I thank you so much for it.

  • Pyropuncher anyone?

  • @TheTacticalChipmunk It's funny because I randomly searched this video and I know Pyropuncher. If anyone it would be Pyrao though haha

  • I remember seeing this when it first aired, and being moved to tears. I knew he wouldnt return the next year to the Espys, and he didnt. I actually didnt like the guy because his NC State basketball team had beaten Houston in the finals in 83, but after this speech, I had profound respect for him. May he still be alive right now in the way he believed.

  • you know this is so sad my gym teacher mr.race showed us this viedo and we were leaning about the systems

  • 50 people have absolutely no soul.

  • @xJulz23x

just remember one thing, your faith will carry you throughout your whole life and without you are helpless in times of need

  • @macuzfeatha25 No thank you. "You" may need faith but i have Science and simple reasoning. Thats gotten me very far and i plan on furthering my self but good looking out though. Maybe you can pray for me as well. I need a new car, help a guy out? :)

  • @xJulz23x I don't believe in religion, but who are you to question someone else's beliefs? It's a shame that your pointless empty rhetoric (which has absolutely NOTHING to do with this video) is diverting attention away from this great man/speech. The truth is that no one knows whether there is a higher being or not, but regardless, this is not the place to discuss the religion vs science argument. You should be ashamed of yourself and please just let people enjoy the great Jimmy V.

  • @APviKINGsz28 Not ashamed of being right. I have the right to voice it. If people dont like it they dont have to comment. Obviously, people have no self control, and just feel compelled to comment.

  • @xJulz23x I came at you a little too hard, but you responded respectfully. I just love this speech a lot, but you definitely have the right to voice your opinion. Hopefully you see where I'm coming from.

  • @APviKINGsz28 I do see where you're coming from and i respect it.

  • @xJulz23x

    you are a dumbass

  • @macuzfeatha25 If that's how you feel good for you its the internet you are meaningless.

  • cried 1st time i saw it

  • great message!

  • POWERFUL!!!

  • Awesome always!

  • 18 years later, still a wonderful speech.

  • @KJVIDS82 nah

  • Best 11 minutes of words in my life, very inspiring and I wasn't born for another 5 years, wish Jimmy V was still here to give those kinds of speeches

  • This is just so incredibly moving..

  • Still as emotionally power-packed and inspirational as it was in 1993. Simply the greatest!

  • If you dislike this for any reason your ignorant to the point you don't deserve to live.

  • @hammerdegi8 harsh...

  • The Wolfpack family will always love you, Coach V. We miss you everyday.

  • 50 people have no soul...

  • Could you idiots please stop arguing about religion here in the comments section of an amazing & inspiring speech? I'm sure at least one of you can take a second and use some common sense and just stop replying to the other #TheHighRoad

Mindboggling that anyone can watch this video then waste time arguing below it about anything. Try watching it again, maybe alittle slower, try to listen this time and comprehend the points he's making.

  • This is the first time I watch this video and, WOW! So inspiring.

  • @Trevor#########, You can spew your beliefs about Science but you shouldn't go around bad mouthing others or their beliefs. It isn't right no matter what religion you believe in.

  • @cbone15000 in what way did I bad mouth anybodies beliefs.?

  • Nearly 20 years later and I've seen this 50+ times, and there's still tears like waterfalls every time without fail.

  • Every professor has a "Last Lecture" before they leave a university. Jim Valvano may not have been a professor, but this is a great lecture.

  • how does this video not have over a million views?!? don't ever give up!

  • Your family, religion, and Rutgers Basketball!

  • thanks for saving my dad.

  • "like I'm worried about some guy in the back going 30 seconds." Love it.

  • Every time I watch this, 2:50 is when the tears come. Without fail.

  • Get teary eyed every time I watch this. Greatest speech I've ever seen, so inspiring.

  • Simply the greatest speech of all time. As a cancer survivor every time I feel down on myself I come back and watch this video it makes me feel so lucky. Enjoy life you only have one and it can quickly be taken from you. You have one life enjoy it, don't worry about others might think of you, be yourself and never change. Also don't give up, don't ever give up.

  • How can you dislike this? "I hate inspiration, I love cancer"

  • "If you laugh, you think, and you cry that's a full day" I do all three of those in this video.

  • 50 people gave up.

  • " Don't give up, Don't ever give up."

  • The negativity in these comments are awful.

  • One luv jimmy V

OG till the death of him

  • Time for my semi-annual viewing of this speech as final exams come up--how can I not study my ass off after watching this

  • Love the message, but cancer research is a scam. There were cures for cancer long before it ever became a widespread form of disease. Cancer comes based on your own personal choice of lifestyle in most cases. Case closed. Environmental pollution causes it in some, and for them you are a casualty of new age shenanigans in the field of technology

  • @sportsphanbrah he was helped both to and from the podium. Like he said in the speech when they tried to give him the 30 second warning "he was filled with tumors" first hand experience, just treatment for a life threatening cancer can put you in a wheelchair. I'm a 28 year old mountain of a man and my treatments have put me in a chair more than once. Cancer treatment is rougher than the actual cancer.

  • this speech is probably goat

  • boohoo

  • he was carried to the podium?

  • Don't give up, don't ever give up.

  • It's unfortunate that this video has less than 1 million views, and those shitty videos of cats dancing have hundreds of millions. Says a lot about the priorities of our culture.

  • Comment removed

  • @sakibombtom Probably around 50 different videos of this speech on youtube..So a lot of other people have watched it..Just not on this particular one. Im guessing around 5 million different ppl have watched this video on youtube..when u factor in other sites it's probably off the charts..it's a very popular video & one of the greatest speeches ever.

  • 9 months before i was born

  • Thumbs up if you listen to this every day.

  • This is one of the best speeches ever given. RIP Jimmy V.

  • I think this is just beautiful .. Every morning I walk out of my front door , I think " Laugh , think , and cry " and whenever things don't go my way or I'm just having a bad day , I think to myself " don't give up , don't ever give up" . This really motivates me ..

  • I HAVE CANCER AND I WATCH THIS EVERY DAY..IM 32 AND SMOKING WAS CAUSE..I BEG U AS BROTHER SISTER FRIEND OR COMPLETE STRANGER AS I AM TO QUIT SMOKING- U ARE NOT ONLY HURTING UR SELF...GOD BLESS U ALL AND I WISH YOU ALL OF THE BEST :)

  • I had to watch this video twice. Great Speech.

  • The most inspirational speech I have ever seen.

  • How is it possible that there is even 1 dislike of this video?

  • A mere 11 mins of Jimmy V's life have inspired and given hope to MILLIONS of people forever. That, my friend, is why this is THE BEST speech in sports history.

  • @missmandybear4 hit the CC button on the video (next to the resolution setting) and turn captions on. Select transcribe audio. I just watched a few minutes with captions turned on and it's not perfect but it does a pretty good job of transcribing what he's saying

  • I'm deaf and would like to see this video in English subtitles. Can that be possible?

  • @missmandybear4 You can probably look up the speech online and just play the video side by side. It's not subtitles but it will do until you find one. Good luck!

  • or maybe 48 people were watching this upside down??

  • People now a days look up to the wrong type people who send out bad messages and are just an overall bad influence. Jimmy V is truly someone who everyone should look up to. An a amazing person, and his message will always live on. I have faith we will one day find a cure to this dreaded disease. "Don't give up, don't ever give up".

I never will give up thanks to my role model Jimmy Valvano

  • Cant watch this without tearing up bro.........

  • I use to put the " don't give up, don't ever give " on some tape on my soccer cleats for inspiration every time I bent down and got out of breath... This is probably the best speech ever

  • i really dont understand how people can dislike this speech....wtf is wrong with you

  • I agree that the dislikes are sickening BUT

it is also disheartening that so much of the comments focus on the negative here. This is the very antithesis of what this video is all about! Cancer itself provides us with enough negativity in our lives. This is not about religion either. This is about bringing good to the world just like Jimmy V was trying to do here. Comment on that and contribute to that dialogue.

  • Jerks whoever disliked this video.

  • One of the greatest speeches of the modern era.

  • 47 People should die because of cancer

  • Why do Atheists love hearing them self talk. Lol shut the fuck up we know you don't like GOD. Stop trying to make everyone be a shitty person like you people lol

  • @987motors Please describe how Atheist are shitty people i'd love to hear your reasoning.

  • @987motors Your comment is proof that religion is the biggest cause of ignorance and hatred

  • always brings a tear to my eye. Thank you Jimmy V

  • 9:26-9:32 gets me everytime

  • Whoever the 48 people are who disliked this video are absolutely retarded and need a bullet in the head. You probably did that to irritate people. There is no way to possibly not like this and not be inspired by this man's speech. R.I.P. Jimmy V!

  • I watch this every year. It always makes me realize what is important.

  • Hahahahah I linked this page to my friend because i said it was hilarious all the religious nut jobs spewing their non sense cracks us up everytime. By all means continue and pray while hard working scientist try and find the cure for this horrible disease. I wonder who will result in bringing forth more factual consistent research, information.

  • @xJulz23x What if they pray for scientists to find a cure?

  • @Iceber9 I think you're missing the point of praying does nothing. If you pray for it to rain 365 days of the year and one day it rains you believe your prayer was answered when in reality it was going to happen anyway. The fact you keep praying/hoping for something over and over it will inevitably happen without the needing of prayer. SO again instead of praying actually go out and learn about how to cure it instead of sit behind a screen and mouth of useless rambles.

  • @xJulz23x I think you're missing the point of a joke. LOL athiests are just like christians in their dogmatic defense of their faith.

  • @Iceber9 Wrong and Wrong you are sir. Atheism isn't a faith, we don't have "faith" in atheism there is no need. We have Science and the scientific method. Which isn't perfect but the best damn thing we have at the moment. I don't have to "defend" atheism, there is nothing to defend. We have facts, and evidence. no need to defend truth. On the other hand, Christians who spout off bed time stories and inconsistent lies, they are the ones who require the defending.

  • @xJulz23x You should look up the book "Against Method" by paul Fehyerbrand. It is proof that the "scientific method" is a crock of B.S

  • @trevor123698123 The Scientific Method has gotten us way farther in progressing as Humans and in science then religion has ever done. I stated it isnt perfect and probably has loads of flaws with it and can be bettered. Unless someone can come up with a better Method tot he Scientific Method and isnt the religious way of doing things ill stick with it.

  • @xJulz23x Science is a religion, and to use the scientific method as proof of there being no god is asinine to the core. Your blind faith in the scientific method is a religion in itself. Look up the book "The tyranny of science" by Paul Feyerabend

  • @trevor123698123 I beg of you to tell me that you aren't serious. Science is NOT a religion. Religion "specifically" Christianity advocates hatred, violence, and slavery being ok. Science does in no way FORCE people to believe or suffer consequences. Who said i was using the Scientific Method to disprove God? I said already you cant disprove a double negative. please if you're going to debate at least pay attention to what others write.

  • @xJulz23x Christians dont always agree with and support hatred, and violence... Its the person, bad christians and good christians are different people, not one in the same.

  • @ReidCharlotte Even if you don't agree with it. its in the Bible. Can you be a serious Christian without using the Bible as a guide line to your life? Or does it work by picking and choosing the lines that best fit ones situation and not bother with the whole book. I don't believe there is such a thing as bad/good Christians. If you're a bad person you're a bad person, if you're good etc. Why does it have to be separate with bad and good Christians. People are who they are.

  • @xJulz23x You have just as much FAITH in your belief that there is no God as Chirstians have faith that there is one. You're really just a different side of the same coin. There's no scientific evidence to prove there is a God, but there also isn't any evidence to disprove the existence of God. They haven't even proven the Higgs boson. You're going by faith just like them. Both groups are so certain they're right and so self righteous too...It's hilarious. Atheists and Christians are so similar.

  • @Iceber9 I don't have a belief idk where you keep grabbing that from. You cant have any scientific proof to disprove an object or anomaly that doesn't exist its a double negative. I don't need faith I've stated i trust the Scientific Method as it has gotten us farther as a species.Again its not PERFECT, but seeing as it has brought us the most results i will gladly trust in it until a better one is presented. its not a belief its fact and there's evidence everywhere to prove it.

  • @xJulz23x Its not a fact at all. You are a total fool for thinking so. The Fibonacci sequence is proof of a creator.

  • @trevor123698123 Please explain just spewing a statement without any evidence doesn't make something true. You also cannot pull random subjects out of nowhere, and barely touch on them and expect people to believe what you're saying is true.

  • @xJulz23x I gave you the answer to whether or not there is a creator. And I never said science was bad, just that science as you know it is a religion. You know nothing about the dogma behind modern science and to believe in it as you do is the same as a religion. You think that science can prove everything, and it proves nothing. Especially when there are powers behind science controlling the information that comes out of science. All religions you know of are perverted. Don't bad mouth them.

  • @trevor123698123 Ahhhh i see where you're coming from. You have an extreme case of paranoia coupled with being Religious that's a very deadly combination. 1. You keep putting words in my mouth that i have never said. 2. You also make false claims yet AGAIN without any backup knowledge just assumptions 3. You're also no one to tell me what i think is right or wrong. "You think that science can prove everything, and it proves nothing" What does science have to prove again?

  • @xJulz23x I give you books explaining dogma within science, and you answer with labeling me as psychotic. Its quite obvious that you don't open books very often in your life, stop acting like you have anything invested into your ideas other than blind faith

  • @trevor123698123 i ask you simple questions you retort with wild theories that arent widely known for them being ludicrously insane. Its quite obvious you disregard simple reasoning in favor of all mighty invisible unicorn. No matter what anyone else says. in the end you wont be swayed to open your eyes and see the control religion has over you and choose to live your life in fear of hell. Sad for you, guess ill have to live life enough for myself and you since you wont.

  • @xJulz23x So you call the theory of relativity simple reasoning? And you think that the theory of relativity is not an insanely complicated scientific mess used for dogmatic purpose?

I am not a religious person in any way at all. I am just a person sick of people like you thinking religion is something that its not and going on wild crusades against it to the point that you compare peoples beliefs in god to believing in a magic unicorn. The fibonocci sequence is the stamp of a creator.

  • @trevor123698123 So you don't believe in God, but a creator. So what does this creator do/represent then? You love this creator yet know nothing of him or why it(which it doesn't) exist. Explain how the Theory of Relativity is used for "dogmatic purposes". This will be a good chuckle, go on. Oh, you know me going on a Wild Crusade on the internet, im just a crazy bad ass mofo Please...get a grip with yourself.

  • @xJulz23x You talk about puting words in your mouth. I said there is proof of a creator. Not that I believe in one. If you put your mind to it you can figure out how relativity is a farce. Nothing I say will tell you that. Its all relative. But its not.

  • @trevor123698123 Why would you claim there is a creator, then follow it by saying. im content. How can you live knowing there is a divine power and you don't care to know about it. Such self limitations are horrible to have.

  • Comment removed

  • @xJulz23x Crusade: Lead or take part in a campaign concerning a social, political, or religious issue.

It is wild because you talk out of your ass like 99% of people. You can think i am all you want. Im just a guy with some ideas.

  • @trevor123698123 Yes i talk out of my ass 99% of the time. Just like claiming there is a creator in the sky whose invisible doing who knows what dangeling his strings above everyones head. Yea that sounds great. and level-headed

  • @xJulz23x To say that it is a fact that there is no God is a belief. God's existence hasn't been proven or disproven by anyone. To say it can’t be proven because it doesn’t exist isn’t science it's belief. To rule it out as a possibility isn’t scientific. What we know about this universe is limited. We don't know why the laws created after the big bang exist as they are. We don't know if there is a 4th dimension and you think you know for a fact there is no higher power. Sounds like blind faith.

  • @Iceber9 um no? To say its a fact that there is no God is common knowledge. There isn't any hard data that is in favor of there being a God. its all stories, and uncredited events that no one can confirm. I don't understand how a fact can be belief, its truth. Again and again i say this the burden of proof doesn't lie on people to disprove it it lies on the person claiming it. Why don't you understand that. You make an absurd claim you follow it up with hard evidence not my job.

  • @xJulz23x You are a douche..if you dont believe in the Lord shut the hell up and dont make a fool of your self saying something stupid.

  • @gbpackkkk I dont think your lord would tolerate such immature behavior. Oh wait, no worries just repent for your sins everything is ok again.

  • Comment removed

  • @Iceber9 modern christians who follow modern ways are self righteous. Christianity has been perverted from its roots.

  • @Iceber9 Most are but true christians know that Christianity is nothing of what mainstream america thinks it is. In fact christianity in its true form is unknown to 99% of "Christians. I would bet more atheists follow christened virtues than actualy christians.

  • @xJulz23x They're doing what they can...not everyone is a scientist. :/

  • @brittaneyrea Donating money is more useful than prayer. They should donate if thats the least bit of what they can do.

  • I watch this on ESPN every year and still get choked up.

  • Awesome speech! On the note of cancer, however, there are currently cures already in existence, but you won't hear this from the medical community. For more info, see .facebook.com/pages/Cancer-Scam/167384453349891

  • I cry every time.
