  • I can see why people and things compare Aphex Twin to Autechre, because they're both completely brilliant (no I don't like every tune they made). But also very different from each other.

The only sad thing I find is that even with the internet and everything it is still hard to find such good music, on the other hand when I find it, I can appreciate it so much more. People like them keep the music alive. Greetings.

  • lol I thought aphex was the creepy one, but autechre are fucking mad!

  • i love lego feet

  • LOL@him being a bit of a scouser.

  • i like the description you've made, so true, best part

  • my mistake, stone in focus to vletrmx

  • @everynickistaken1 Dude. Easy on the herb.

  • that long and ambient sound of repetition. you have to be deaf to not understand how you can compare stone in focus to rhubarb, not emotionally exactly, but with ambience and essence

  • rhubarb and vletrmx, stone in focus all focus on length of chords when repeated . another similarity

  • good example of all i'm explaining is cichli by autechre and tha by aphex

  • the breaks were repetitive in the chords each time they repeated themselves, with the breaks or silences located in different parts of the chord or chords

  • they put breaks in a repetitive sequence within a chord too, so don't give me this "all artists put breaks" crap. both within the chord that repeats makes it similar.

  • Not gatorade and roast beef

  • oh and i'd say autechre are both similar in terms of the way they both like to use lots of breaks in a certain way, like cicihli (song by autechre) had a breaks starting at 2:56, very similar technique to the song called Tha by aphex twin with that sequence of breaks, richard just structured them differently. and who can forget the breaks on blyz castle's beat through the whole song, thus being similar to richard's in the maze park. so don't think they're too far off. Sherbert and Ice cream toME

  • and the most epic nose pick ever due to the person picking their nose, not the nose pick itself. i've seen longer and more profound picks than that.

  • comparing aphex twin and autechre is not like comparing gatorade to roast beef. it's like sherbert to ice cream, they're both cold (both techno), both use abstract and lots of soun effects with lots of similar techniques (delicious flavor)

  • the guy in the background is mashed.

  • well autechre is as brilliant as aphex twin

  • ALL HAIL AE!

  • lol rob, he's just staring off into space.

  • oW-teck-rUh

  • were's the rest of the footage?

  • @omikra This is all of the Autechre "interview" there is in the Modulations documentary... with the exception of the word "that", which is missing at the end of this video.

  • i think this has become my favorite quotation: scifi space future whats this excellent computer you know oh wicked

  • I patted Rob Brown on the shoulder after they performed in Gothenburg (OMG OMG OMG OMG), but later he kissed a girl on the cheek, wished that would've been me :P

  • @F3udF1st heh What!? Nån från publiken alltså?

  • @MrJokami Ja precis! Rob va rätt social, gick ner till oss och snackade typ, men Sean försvann direkt, vart ju mörkt så vetefan vars han blev av.

  • I like the way they try to walk new paths as I like a lot of their music, but I'd like it even more, if they wouldn't take themselves so damn serious!

  • @sweepstakes

and who are this two people?

  • I saw them live recently and their music was beautiful and completely breathtaking. i could have happily stood there for several days and listened to it.

  • the sounds of next tuesday.

  • ROB BROWN PICKS HIS NOSE

  • @MAXIMUSMISCHIEF

    Sean Booth picks his nose

  • @PhilPlay same shitpile

  • Ah, the old nose-pick. Effective way to start any interview.

  • Rob Hall needs to pass that doobie he just RIPPED before the camera started rolling!!

  • @MTC2600 haaha, for sure

  • Did he get that gold up there in that nose! LOL!

  • That was the most epic nose-pick evar.

I'm surprised that people are comparing Autechre with Aphex Twin. It's a bit like comparing Gatorade with roast beef: two things I like that are totally different.

  • that's freaking bizarre that you use that analogy because that's what I brought for lunch today.

  • @sweepstakes synchronicity

  • or comparing strawberry fizz-whizz to a pink frosted sprinkled donut. they may be different, but the pink frosted sprinkled donut will always be king.

  • LOL, that's not what I was getting at.

  • @CurlyAngryman While there is no comparison, I never would've discovered Autechre if it wasn't for the music of Aphex Twin.

  • rob is so high xD

  • Is it me or are is eyes twitching a little?

  • anyone can make music. only two people in the world can make music of their caliber.

  • Just because they're not verbose doesn't mean they're not intelligent. I dare you to make your music completely from scratch--no samples, no fancy interfaces, just a white palette overlayed onto a copy of Max/MSP.

And yeah, anybody can make music, but don't be such a dense twat about it.

  • making music is breaking through a wall every time you begin the creative process. that wall is fortified by all of the electronics involved in autechre's sound. they must be beastly strong because they seem to pulverize that wall and use the pieces.

  • aphex twin owns but these guys are good too

  • ae pisses all over Aphex ...Aphex is too old school, ae are always pushing the boundaries with every new track they bring out.

  • Personal preference surely?

I wouldn't really say the two are all that comparable.

ae win on the technical side obviously but if anything aphex rights the catchier electro beats hands down.

  • You could say that Aphex has catchier electro beats, but you could say that about almost anything out there.

The sweet thing is about Autechre is that you are actually challenged to appreciate the beauty of their sound which is very hard to come by these days because most other so called musicians/DJs are just trying to blast out blatent, in-your-face rubbish.

Maybe Aphex Twin was a genius in what he did 15 years ago but everyone is doing what he is doing these days and its just ...boring.

  • I mean come on, how many times can you use a Roland TB 303 to a 4 to the floor electro beat! tut. lol

  • i think most musicians, while they enjoy crafting original beats, are more concerned with harmonic content. that is what ties the work together.

also, creating original sounding beats is not so difficult, but creating something out of 12 tones that still pushes the boundaries of harmony and melody and their interplay, that is what musicians truly seek after.

think of this: take your pick of a favorite autechre track, now picture it without its harmonic content. no matter how subtle, it's vital

  • Actually autechre beat the shit out of aphex twin. Be realistic. Aphex was interesting one decade ago. These dudes sound ahead of time even now. Sorry mate :)

  • Aphex Twin is probably the best producer of ambient tunes (See Lichen and Rhubarb) but otherwise I think Autechre is(are?) much more talented. Aphex was cutting edge for his time just like Kraftwerk was, but now that novelty wore off a little and he's not very dissimilar to the rest of the people writing that sort of music.

  • Being ahead of time, who gives a fuck, really. Does music need to "sound new" to like it ? This is ridiculous...

  • I'm saying that it's nice to have something that's completely adverse from everything else--who wants to buy an album if it sounds the same as one they already own?

  • That's the case with glitchy music. Aphex Twin doesn't care about releasing 'new' music and is still doing amazing tracks. (I know I'm repeating but) A track doesn't need to sound new to be great, same with artists. Good music stays good, no matter 'new' or not.

Btw you give me Autechre and Yasume or some, I can't see any difference...

Matter of taste, we need every kind of music, not only new music for everybody.

  • Of course, I never said that Aphex wasn't talented and that his music wasn't as good as it used to be, but in terms with making a progression I think Autechre has done a lot more recently than Aphex has, though he was obviously setting the groundwork for AE and many others.

I'm not being closed-minded with my tastes--I listen to a lot ranging from the early synth experiments of the 50s to albums that came out mere months ago. Aphex and Autechre are still two of my favorite artists, behind BoC.

  • That's true, Autechre is always pushing the limits and people like their music or not, there's no problem with that. But what scares me is that more and more people see progression like a sake : If it isn't new, it is necessarily bad. What a damn pity.

  • It's sad. Like, have you ever listened to Kraftwerk, Raymond Scott, Tangerine Dream or the first Pink Floyd album? Shit is genius, and it was all produced decades before anything Autechre or Aphex did. More so, I'm pretty sure they were kids at that point, probably before Aphex had even been doing his hardware experiments.

And nobody really recognizes these classic artists, it's really just sad.

But like, in terms of progression, I -am- pretty sick of artists copying each other, but hey.

  • So according to you anybody who ever played the electric guitar after say the beatles or hendrix is a copying each other.

Theses guys are pioneers because they developed a language , so what if people use the same language and maybe speak it better.

mmm. Let's see. Your using english as a language. I guess your a copy cat. I think according to your vision

    you should invent your own.

Sorry if I seem harsh, but the copying thing is ridiculous.

  • Thank you for taking what I said out of context, sir

  • My apologies if I misunderstood :

    >>But like, in terms of progression, I -am- pretty sick of artists copying each other, but hey.

I just hear/read too often people's concern for the container over the content.

sorry did not want to insult

  • Ohh, in that I was speaking more along the lines of people basically trying to BE Autechre. The whole thing about this sort of music is to break at least a little ground, and not try to be a carbon copy, and a lot of artists (Not the major ones, obviously) are doing exactly that, either with ae or Boards of Canada or whoever their favorite is at the time.

  • Just to be the devil's advocate, one good thing I could see Is that when in this Quest of "trying to be Ae" people develop their techniques. Their own sound. Also, If people go there , it's probably because they feel it's something that represents them. I mean it's not their grandma trying to be Ae.

Coming back to "Quest". What make Ae Ae, is that they never stopped theirs. I was on a forum w. Sean 2 weeks ago. He's still doing it after all of this. Good. Jazz players keep at it 'till they die.

  • exactly. our whole life is pretty much cliche. that is basically what the basis of life is, there's principle which has already been set place by social mores and norms and we unconsciously live through that. i think making a mental decision to NOT copy eachother is just copying the other people who also made that same mental decision and goal.

trying to be original and not a cliche is just as cliche as people who use a 4/4 kick beat in techno. lets all just enjoy:D

  • BASTA DIOBONO

  • @giddycarousel basta cosa?

  • i think RDJ surpasses anyone else in the melody/harmony department, songs like rhubarb, blue calx, avril 14, nanou2, flim... they are so simple, but unmistakably aphex twin. it is a little bit more difficult to differentiate autechre than aphex twin i would say, though they have definitely maintained their sound from amber to quaristice.

  • you just have bad taste

  • I love how Sean picks his nose like that. It's so obvious, and obnoxious, like they just don't take anything seriously. Sort of like Noisia, when they do interviews.

  • more Ae interview/wank material

    youtube / v=JYD_7etGCrQ

  • I wank off to this, i've already had 3 wanks and i intend to have a few more wanks in the future.

  • wow me too

  • @screwtape84 those are pretty fast wanks

  • they look like their high on something

  • I just sent an IM regarding the video: "I wonder what they were on for this interview..." Maybe they are just HIGH ON LIFE...

  • Blimey! H has a right old rummage! I bet wiped on his trousers!Lol!

  • total freaks. i love them.

  • This isn't fair!!! This can't be the ONLY filmed interview on Youtube of Autechre. There has to be more! Watching more interviews with these geniuses would be brain food for me. If anybody knows where there are more video or even audio Autechre interviews, let me know. I love these guys!

  • hmmm yes... try the jonathan ross show!!!

  • Amo a Autechre.

    Autechre = musica perfecta

  • nose picking is surreal !

  • aUDIO ARCHETECTURE, KIND OF MEANS AUTECHRE THANKS ANYWAY, BUT THEY ARE aqwesome

  • nice. who gives a crap? I do. I don't. I do. I Don't. I'm confused and picky picky picky....Actually, picky picky pixky. I couldn't be buggered sorting the last bit of spelling out. Oh maybe I'm 'that guy' as in who gives a what job? Where when? It's a stupid world or am I missing the point? bugee bugee bugee. Bu bu bagGA!

  • the name autechre, is short for "audio architecture"

pretty brilliant. these 2 men have pushed music forward, just like a modern day mozart or bach.

  • you have no idea how revolutionary Bach was in his time. people's minds got blown away, pretty much like Autechre (especially live) is doing these days. it's worth checking out more revolutions to understand what you're talking about. Euro trance sucks, Bach rules.

  • Sorry I clicked on thumbs down by mistake!!! I always keep on doing it. I absolutely agree with you. I love classical music, but I also love bands like Autechre. It's not very clever to say that classical music sucks.

  • The name isn't short for anything. They had a track named "au" because it had a certain sound in it. The rest of the name was typed at random. they would pass out tapes with 'autechre' on it and people thought it was their name so they kept it.

I read it in an interview.

  • The name 'autechre' isn't short for anything. So they say, at least. My own theory is that it's short for the latin phrase "autem pulchre"...

  • guess what...youre wrong about the name. Look it up.

  • wait... they're real, human people? :O

  • lol, no that's just they're outer shells,

they have midi ports ont back of their heads, they just sleep to make music. lol

  • MUHHAHA

    very well!

    best comment ever :)

  • It can also be pronounced, "Awe-tek-ra." That's how the blokes who work at Warp pronounce it.

  • How do you pronounce their name? Ah-duh-tray?

  • "Or-tekka"

  • really? cool thx.

  • 'awe-tek-er'

  • shut-your-noise

  • the "clipper " and "second bad vilbel ", are hot tracks, ie songs yeah avbout the gecko quote he does sound like him, but hey want to have an english mufdfdin with butter and jam... ohh tasty"

  • I want to hear the sean booth talk... that other guy is right... rob sounds like the geico geko

  • It`s the other way around actually. Sean is the one speaking, Rob is the one zoning out on the left. But yeah, I couldn`t help but make that vocal comparison.

  • i interviewd the lads loads on ibc radio about 15 years ago in a flat in bury or blackley wherever we could keep clear of the dti then saw them at orbital who they were supporting at the acadamey manchester nice to see they done good

  • Kings of England!

  • Kings of nosepicking.

  • hoo wreszcie wywyad z ae:D

  • hellvines, I've got some mp3s I could put some images to. but no, no more video that I know of. let me know if you find some!

  • anymore interviews?

  • Haha...I was thinking the same damn thing. :P

  • Hah dude...Sean sounds just like the Geico gecko :)

  • HA!!

  • That`s like saying that someone from Texas has a Jersey accent!

They both sound English, granted, but Geico Gecko is done by someone with a slight cokney (London) accent.

Sean has a very northern accent because he`s from Rochdale (nr Manchester).
