I can see why people and things compare Aphex Twin to Autechre, because they're both completely brilliant (no I don't like every tune they made). But also very different from each other.
The only sad thing I find is that even with the internet and everything it is still hard to find such good music, on the other hand when I find it, I can appreciate it so much more. People like them keep the music alive. Greetings.
that long and ambient sound of repetition. you have to be deaf to not understand how you can compare stone in focus to rhubarb, not emotionally exactly, but with ambience and essence
the breaks were repetitive in the chords each time they repeated themselves, with the breaks or silences located in different parts of the chord or chords
they put breaks in a repetitive sequence within a chord too, so don't give me this "all artists put breaks" crap. both within the chord that repeats makes it similar.
oh and i'd say autechre are both similar in terms of the way they both like to use lots of breaks in a certain way, like cicihli (song by autechre) had a breaks starting at 2:56, very similar technique to the song called Tha by aphex twin with that sequence of breaks, richard just structured them differently. and who can forget the breaks on blyz castle's beat through the whole song, thus being similar to richard's in the maze park. so don't think they're too far off. Sherbert and Ice cream toME
comparing aphex twin and autechre is not like comparing gatorade to roast beef. it's like sherbert to ice cream, they're both cold (both techno), both use abstract and lots of soun effects with lots of similar techniques (delicious flavor)
@omikra This is all of the Autechre "interview" there is in the Modulations documentary... with the exception of the word "that", which is missing at the end of this video.
I patted Rob Brown on the shoulder after they performed in Gothenburg (OMG OMG OMG OMG), but later he kissed a girl on the cheek, wished that would've been me :P
I like the way they try to walk new paths as I like a lot of their music, but I'd like it even more, if they wouldn't take themselves so damn serious!
I saw them live recently and their music was beautiful and completely breathtaking. i could have happily stood there for several days and listened to it.
I'm surprised that people are comparing Autechre with Aphex Twin. It's a bit like comparing Gatorade with roast beef: two things I like that are totally different.
or comparing strawberry fizz-whizz to a pink frosted sprinkled donut. they may be different, but the pink frosted sprinkled donut will always be king.
Just because they're not verbose doesn't mean they're not intelligent. I dare you to make your music completely from scratch--no samples, no fancy interfaces, just a white palette overlayed onto a copy of Max/MSP.
And yeah, anybody can make music, but don't be such a dense twat about it.
making music is breaking through a wall every time you begin the creative process. that wall is fortified by all of the electronics involved in autechre's sound. they must be beastly strong because they seem to pulverize that wall and use the pieces.
You could say that Aphex has catchier electro beats, but you could say that about almost anything out there.
The sweet thing is about Autechre is that you are actually challenged to appreciate the beauty of their sound which is very hard to come by these days because most other so called musicians/DJs are just trying to blast out blatent, in-your-face rubbish.
Maybe Aphex Twin was a genius in what he did 15 years ago but everyone is doing what he is doing these days and its just ...boring.
i think most musicians, while they enjoy crafting original beats, are more concerned with harmonic content. that is what ties the work together.
also, creating original sounding beats is not so difficult, but creating something out of 12 tones that still pushes the boundaries of harmony and melody and their interplay, that is what musicians truly seek after.
think of this: take your pick of a favorite autechre track, now picture it without its harmonic content. no matter how subtle, it's vital
Actually autechre beat the shit out of aphex twin. Be realistic. Aphex was interesting one decade ago. These dudes sound ahead of time even now. Sorry mate :)
Aphex Twin is probably the best producer of ambient tunes (See Lichen and Rhubarb) but otherwise I think Autechre is(are?) much more talented. Aphex was cutting edge for his time just like Kraftwerk was, but now that novelty wore off a little and he's not very dissimilar to the rest of the people writing that sort of music.
I'm saying that it's nice to have something that's completely adverse from everything else--who wants to buy an album if it sounds the same as one they already own?
That's the case with glitchy music. Aphex Twin doesn't care about releasing 'new' music and is still doing amazing tracks. (I know I'm repeating but) A track doesn't need to sound new to be great, same with artists. Good music stays good, no matter 'new' or not.
Btw you give me Autechre and Yasume or some, I can't see any difference...
Matter of taste, we need every kind of music, not only new music for everybody.
Of course, I never said that Aphex wasn't talented and that his music wasn't as good as it used to be, but in terms with making a progression I think Autechre has done a lot more recently than Aphex has, though he was obviously setting the groundwork for AE and many others.
I'm not being closed-minded with my tastes--I listen to a lot ranging from the early synth experiments of the 50s to albums that came out mere months ago. Aphex and Autechre are still two of my favorite artists, behind BoC.
That's true, Autechre is always pushing the limits and people like their music or not, there's no problem with that. But what scares me is that more and more people see progression like a sake : If it isn't new, it is necessarily bad. What a damn pity.
It's sad. Like, have you ever listened to Kraftwerk, Raymond Scott, Tangerine Dream or the first Pink Floyd album? Shit is genius, and it was all produced decades before anything Autechre or Aphex did. More so, I'm pretty sure they were kids at that point, probably before Aphex had even been doing his hardware experiments.
And nobody really recognizes these classic artists, it's really just sad.
But like, in terms of progression, I -am- pretty sick of artists copying each other, but hey.
Ohh, in that I was speaking more along the lines of people basically trying to BE Autechre. The whole thing about this sort of music is to break at least a little ground, and not try to be a carbon copy, and a lot of artists (Not the major ones, obviously) are doing exactly that, either with ae or Boards of Canada or whoever their favorite is at the time.
Just to be the devil's advocate, one good thing I could see Is that when in this Quest of "trying to be Ae" people develop their techniques. Their own sound. Also, If people go there , it's probably because they feel it's something that represents them. I mean it's not their grandma trying to be Ae.
Coming back to "Quest". What make Ae Ae, is that they never stopped theirs. I was on a forum w. Sean 2 weeks ago. He's still doing it after all of this. Good. Jazz players keep at it 'till they die.
exactly. our whole life is pretty much cliche. that is basically what the basis of life is, there's principle which has already been set place by social mores and norms and we unconsciously live through that. i think making a mental decision to NOT copy eachother is just copying the other people who also made that same mental decision and goal.
trying to be original and not a cliche is just as cliche as people who use a 4/4 kick beat in techno. lets all just enjoy:D
i think RDJ surpasses anyone else in the melody/harmony department, songs like rhubarb, blue calx, avril 14, nanou2, flim... they are so simple, but unmistakably aphex twin. it is a little bit more difficult to differentiate autechre than aphex twin i would say, though they have definitely maintained their sound from amber to quaristice.
I love how Sean picks his nose like that. It's so obvious, and obnoxious, like they just don't take anything seriously. Sort of like Noisia, when they do interviews.
