ok so heres my delema.. theres so many opinions on the best way to learn Japanese.. i personally wen the route of buying a Japanese language book, a sound and phase chart. and a book to learn the hiragana, katakana,and kanji charactors. but i havent started learning the charactors. i just wanted to learn the language first. then the charactors. some people have told me that its better to learn the charactors. THEN the language ? im not sure. i need help! i plan to visit Japan in october and..

depends on how long you're going to be there; long stay- go for it, you'll eventually pick up the language if you put in the effort. However if your stay will be short, i'd suggest getting to an mid/high intermediate level first, then you will get the most out of the immersion process. Through immersion there is a point where the brain finally starts to make sense of the language, things start clicking and you start to think in that language; from there you'll learn exponentially faster.

If you're at an intermediate level before you get there and can carry a basic conversation you'll be at that or close to that point already. If not it'll take a lot of time and effort to reach that point, all of which is kind of a waste if you don't have much time to spend there. As for learning the kana, DO IT! the sooner the better. and get a text that doesn't use romanji, even after memorizing the kana it takes a lot of practice to be able to read at a normal pace.
