According to the BBB Locks of love raised over $350,000 in combined donations and sale of "unusable material" (hair that does not meet their standards) in 2002. In that same year they produced a total of 113 wigs which were, for the most part, sold, not given to children with hair loss. None of those children had cancer.
@shatros according to my calculations, it cost Locks of Love over $3000 to produce each wig. They claim it takes up to 10 hair donations to make one wig. What they call unsuitable hair is sold. Thousands of donations of hair made per year and only 113 wigs produced? There is something seriously wrong with their math. I can go on Ebay right now and get very nice human hair wigs for under $200 each.
@shatros with the money alone that they raise each year they could give away, not sell as they do but GIVE AWAY 1750 wigs every year instead of 113. Anytime less than 5% of donations ever make it to the intended recipient, then obviously the organization is a scam and in fact a criminal enterprise.
@shatros I had long hair for over a decade. Then I got cancer and had to have chemo. Everyone told me when I cut off my hair that I should have donated it to locks of love. When I talked to my onchology nurse about this she told me she knew of NO organization that every donated a wig to any of their patients and they have the biggest onchology practice in the state and have for over a decade. What does this tell you?
i donated to Pantene also! i didnt know about the locks of love scam until i saw some youtubers getting all upset about it and then i researched it and realized why! so i'm glad I didn't donate to them! and i'll make sure i tell my friends NOT to donate to LoL!
Locks of Love is a scam. They don't meet the Better Business Bureau's Standards for Charity Accountability. They have stated that they collect around 2000 ponytails a week, that's over 100,000 ponytails a year. They say it takes 6 to 10 ponytails to make one wig. If we say 10 that would be over 10,000 wigs per year. The have been in business since 1997 and have only made over 2000 wigs in over 10 years. Less than 1% goes to alopecia patients (NOT cancer patients) and even that has to be paid.
I actually learned about locks of love being a scam before we sent in the hair. People that are interested can search the NY Times Article from Sep 6, 2007. Go to Google and search Lather, Rinse, Donate - New York Times. It will be the first article that comes up.
To donate hair to a legitimate charity you can send the hair (8 inches or more) to: Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Just search Pantine Hair Donation on Google.
Hopefully this will save people from being scammed by Locks of love.
@deepvillage2 PLEASE, as a cancer patient in the past, before I had my chemo, with almost 40" of hair, I did my research, and found that WIGS FOR KIDS is truly the better of the groups that actually, truly DO donate wigs to children. I, too, sadly, learned of the less than truthful LOCKS OF LOVE and what they were doing - or NOT doing - and have asked all folks to donate to WIGS FOR KIDS. Yes, does take a lot of hair and time to make a wig, but for children, it makes their lives so much better!
