Recently a PLETHORA of car painting videos on YouTube- Videos are fine, but one really needs a couple of things YouTube can never supply: 1) Instant email support (I supply 7 days a week) while you are in the middle of your painting job 2) A good detailed reference printed manual- which all of my customers get, for use away from your computer-- It is IMPOSSIBLE to put everything you need on any YouTube clip alone- Please visit my site for more info and help. I agree mostly- I would MUCHHHHH rather paint even in a flimsy tent that outside-- but, if you are in a season of low bug population, and no wind, and you're not doing your Ferrari- it is possible.
@neilslade Okay, with a few hiccups along the way, I have managed to start from square 1, and worked up to two coats of primer on my first project, my 1998 Ford Expedition EB. I ordered your product and did exactly as the material instructed and everything turned out fine! The only problem is I had to keep on top of the dust on the roof due to the truck being in my garage. The truck is covered right now, awaiting guidecoat and blocksanding. Any ideas for dust reduction during base/clear coat?
I have a 91 white Camaro with a few rust spots on the door, otherwise it's a pretty solid yet faded paint job still. If I sand the rust spots, prime, and re paint them white, can I just paint my car yellow after a thorough washing and skip the sanding? Thanks
After sanding down and priming the repaired and filled dents/dings, from what i understand, one must completely sand the car to 500 grit, do you just roughen the clear or sand till the original clear is completely gone?
Uh oh-- this is basic car painting info- if you've got that wrong, you likely have missed much more. PLEASE visit the Easy Paint Your Car Web site-- lots of free information, including the answer to your question there. You don't want to risk missing a LITTLE thing that will wreck your whole BIG PROJECT. Thanks- Neil
Not on the Honda. Finish sanding and polishing is optional- and I did this on my Lotus. What many people don't realize is that the shiniest finish is accomplished by leaving it ALONE after the final clear coat. Sanding will introduce abrasion and swirl marks- no matter how fine the sand paper. You can FLATTEN (like glass) your finish by final polishing and sanding- and get it extremely shiny- but ironically, it will never improve on the shine/gloss one achieves after the last spray alone.
I just ordered your video and book on how to paint your car. I hope it works as I have a 2000 Honda Accord that has what is called car skin cancer... ie. the clear coat peeled horribly a few years ago even though I didnt do anything abormal with this car. ie. I had waxed and washed it as frequently as my previous car. I will upload a video of my progress later. Cheers and keeping fingers crossed!
omg!! i came across this video and my mouth dropped! i have two of those hondas!!! one is mine and one is my step dads! it's an 86 honda civic si hatchback.
I love how people are giving him a hard time about his Lotus comments - while that Lotus is a beautiful car, i bet he paid less for it than most people pay for new Hondas!
Thanks- absolutely right. My Lotus was $14,500 back in 2000, less than a new Miata. But you have to be dedicated to the car- no place in town is qualified to work on it, save a couple of other Lotus owners whom I trust. Fortunately, its a rather simple car, no electronic computers or such, a Ford block with a Lotus aluminum head, two 40DCOE Webers, etc. It's broken down only once in 10 years, and that was fromt he original coil, which I replaced.
It would ruin the paint job. I know how you feel, but in my old age, I've learned that the best revenge is to live a good life. Their carma will take care of them, you need do nothing.
im 17, got a bmw e36 325i that i wanna paint myself 2 tone, black body with a lime green hood, roof and trunk... what gear do i need to do this and what are the steps? could you perhaps PB me about this?
Paint itself would cost maybe $60 if you use single stage urethane (decent enought paint, but its real car paint). Door jambs are nothing except extra time. It's all in the work you do- and painting is not hard. Start at the web site. Thanks
I am only 17, do you think it is easy enough for me to do it myself. I have a 1997 camaro rs. It is red and i want to paint it black(a nice metallic or glossy balck, NOT a flat black). How hard would it be.
When you change color you have to consider that the inside of the door pillars will be a different color- or that you will have to go to the trouble of painting this area also- a headache to mask to keep paint out of the interior. Metallic is more difficult than a solid color as well. Dark colors show mistakes more than light colors.
do you talk about mixing paint and using hardeners in your video im thinking of ordering it soon also want to do my own paint job on my 1990 nissan 240sx the paint is in overall good shape it has a few scratches on the hood tho and the roof has some big dents the hatch is also flat black so I'm going to start with painting the hatch. The only thing that has turned me off is the mixing I don't really have the guts to mes up my only car
The video contains close ups of the Lotus which has had my fine polishing done additionally to demonstrate the difference between a "factory" un-polished finish (adequate for all but collector cars) versus hand rubbed finish. The manual/video/website covers both.
and its a cyclone blue atm i want to paint it any other colour at the moment im not shure but right now there are many scratches and dents on it and quite a bit of rust aswell. By any chance do u have any opinions and adivce on what i should do to give it a new look with paint. Im sort've knew to this and im not shure how much i'd spend either but if u can help me i would very much appreichiate it - thnx RV
Please visit the main site (see MORE INFO upper right) for all the info you need. Painting doesn't take long, nor is it expensive. But fixing dents can take time. But like I say on the video- You CAN do it.- Neil
but that putty idea nd sanding will only do for rust right and minor dents. I might end up doin that for one day and the next 3 days i might do the painting hopefully it works out !!
hey, i have a 2003 bmw 325i and i have never painted a car before but i was thinking about painting mine, i was just wondering if you thought this would be possible for me to do this and make it look profesional or if i shouldnt even try or ill screw my car up, Thanks!
I'm thinking that when it comes to putting all the peace, love and hippie colours on it I should use a leaf blower to make the swirl and such. This will be my first car so I want it to look awesome :p
Yes, of course. If you have access to air brush equipment you could do that kind of thing with an air-brush. But anyone wanted to actually recreate a hippie paintjob authentically, would not air brush it-- you would do it like they did 50 years ago-- with a brush.
Hey Neil, I am very interested in buying your video, not just to learn how to paint a car, but because it is a dream I have had for a very long time. Please send me a video, message me, thank you.
Of course it is, and a very popular color for every make of car, including Mercedes, Porche, and Lotus, and most every make.. White was the original color of both of my cars.
I just spent about an hour on your website and I'm definitely considering purchasing the video/book. I have a question though. I plan on repainting a 1997 buick riviera that has a pearl white paint job. I would like to retain this factory color.
Does your tutorial contain information on base coat clear coat jobs such as a pearl paint job? Is it much more difficult to paint a pearl? If I understand correctly it is a powder that is mixed in a some point. Thanks for the great work!
Yes, The Lotus and the Honda as shown (both mine) were done with separate base/clear- although the same basic technique is used for single stage as well. Pearl can be tough for beginners however, especially dark pearls- but it can be done. I recommend solid colors for first time painters, and if done well, will look very nice, and is much easier to achieve good results than metallic or pearl. No powders are mixed by you in any case.
If I wanted to paint on some designs, would I first color coat the whole car with the necessary coats, that tape off my flames or whatever and then paint those, and THEN do a clearcoat over all of it? Would I have to worry about the design chipping off since it will have a "ledge". Or should it melt in with the base color? Thanks for all you do for us beginners!
Heh, no sweat, man! Didn't mean anything bad by my comment, just the tiny bit of pride (which can easily be misunderstood as arrogance) struck me as a bit funny at the time. You sure do know your stuff, though. Great vids and website. I'm planning on painting my '94 Suzuki just to see how it goes, before I even look into tackling my beloved Pininfarina Spider! Thanks again!
Spray enamel can be used, so can shoe polish. But seriously- enamel will not give the same finish result as automotive urethane- and no matter what you put on top of it, won't change that. The irony of the enamel suggestion- is that a bunch of spray cans will cost as much or more than a quart of real automotive paint- about $35 enough for a car
is it okay to use duplicolor if i have small rust spots, its a silver audi 1991 200 turbo i bought
import car spray paint and the "kit came with primer, silver paint, and over paint finishing. Im planning on removing the rust with steel wool and painting over it the next dry day.
white hides imperfections....my car is black and im trying to find somewhere to teach me how to paint, I have a gun already, i need to find where to get the paint and the processes of mixing and the ratio of which to mix it...the clear coat is peeling on mine and I wouldnt mine to just reclear my paint....how would this be done?
Paint inside a covered car port, and drape clear plastic sheeting on the sides. If you are in a driveway, you must wait for a no-wind day. Small bits of dust won't matter THAT much, they can be finish sanded out.
Oh gosh no- Both the Honda (I paid $2000) and the Lotus are mine. And to the surprise of many, a classic 60's Lotus almost certainly cost less than 90% of the new cars people buy- its just a very nice rare collectible- only 1200 made in '65, and my cost was $14,000, less than a new Miata and most other new factory cars.
Try MORE INFO upper right-- my site has more info than you will know what to do with. This short video is an INTRODUCTION, and there is ANOTHER video right here on YouTube, extremely heavy traffic- thanks
This is an INTRODUCTION so people can link to my other sample video, as well as the whole web site- LINK IN MORE INFO upper right this page- which most people figure out. It is also important to give people the basic "what/why is possible" info, as this clip does- Thanks
Do you have any tips on painting an electric guitar? Some who want their guitars refinished sometimes go to auto painters who are willing to finish a guitar. I guess it's side money for auto painters and the job turns out good.
OH YES! Go to my site- (link upper right MORE INFO) there is a link to GUITARS and MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS - bikes too- If you go down the page- with lots of examples. The procedure for painting a guitar is the same as for a car-- I use single stage acrylic urethane and the results are outstanding.
i want to paint my civic flat black. i want to know what exactly i have to do like if i have to sand it or primer it and if i have to sand it what type of grit should i use?
one more question how many gallons do i need?
i will apreciate it if anybody gives me answers...thanks
Flat colors are very difficult to keep looking good and show every imperfection- do not resist dirt well- I do not recommend. None the less it can be done, you would use base coat, and not put any clear on it. Not really a great idea. For all basic painting info as you ask for- see the site MORE INFO upper right on this page- thanks
hay lv t video .. i have a 98 seat ibiza its mt first car its black i was wonderin what would i need i no i need wet and dry sand paper primer and paint is there anythin else
Please see the web site (MORE INFO UPPER RIGHT)- I talk about this. You don't have to remove original paint if there are no major defects. If the original paint is decent, you don't even need primer. Thanks- Neil
I paint outdoors in my covered car port- As I point out on my site, you can paint nearly anywhere- even in your driveway- a covered area is preferred of course, and you must paint on a windless day. However- if you get dust or small particles- if you are restricted to outside, these are easily polished out and will not affect the result. One advantage of outside painting is the abundance of fresh air- better for your lungs and brain.
I paint outside as well. But viewers beware, please check with local and state laws regarding to painting outside using any kind of spray on paint, be it aerosol rattlecanned, or a proper paint gun. Most places have laws against it (for environmental protection) and you could get fined heavily. I think its actually federally prohibited, but most places don't enforce it. If nothing else, do it in your back yard if possible ;)
I've used flexible spray that can be found at automotive trim and repair shops- like Allen and BD in Denver. It's generally used for vinyl and comes in a very wide variety of colors and finishes- i.e. satin, gloss, semi- unlike regular enamel, it is made to flex. I've used it to EXACTLY match the trim on my Lotus interior. Quite durable, dries instant.
Absolutely not if the original paint does not have rust or major body damage. Please see my web page for lots of free info and tips. Sanders can leave deep sanding marks that show through new paint- so you have to know how to use them carefully. You don't have to hand sand everything, but you need to have a little info first... thanks
nice paint man. im in a car club and we have been doing alot of paint job's(small fenders and stuff) with cans for a while. i think the best thing that has helped with a good percentage of the fiberglass parts is after they have had the paint applied and clear coat is wet sanding the hell out of them to get them as close to factory finish as possible. we actually had a local body shop think we had someone paint them for us. proves that you dont need to spend thousands of dollars.
The most interesting thing I've found is people have no real idea how inexpensive first quality automotive urethane is- a quart runs about $31. That's enough for a typical car. You do have to get reducer and hardener, but this only adds about $15. THEN I see people trying to paint their car with RUSTOLEUM!! That's insane.
exactly!!lol i mean small stuff is cool like what i have done. but in nooooo way do i condone doing a whole car with cans. that right there do it right the first time.
No, but you are. Alkyd enamel is oil based paint and is obsolete technology used in the 50's and 60's. All modern automotive manufacturers switched to urethane long ago for a plethora of reasons, including durability, shine, flexibility, and application. Try reading the history of automotive paints on my site.
I like using oil based tractor paint like rustoleum on older trucks it covers well and holds up to abuse 4 fold to car paints only bad part is how long it takes to dry but I wouldnt call it insane.
I've actually used it myself on a Datsun wagon- but it's not going to give the kind of results people are looking for- and as I make clear- you don't save any money nor labor in doing so, and it's certainly not going to work as well as urethane in 99% of the time.
The materials are the same for all- acrylic urethane.
Show finishes require additional finish sanding and polishing, with sufficient layers of clear to withstand this additional work. That's it! All instructions see MORE INFO upper right.
my car is severly oxidized from sitting. it is a dark blue, but it looks horrible now. what can i use to bring the color back? i've used rubbing compound...turtle wax rubbing compound, etc
Once the color is faded- that's about it- you need to reapply color. You can use single stage paint- or better yet, new color/clear coats. You can try something like NOVUS 7- and this will improve the look some, but you'll never get back to NEW look without making new. See MORE INFO upper right. Thanks- Neil
hey i got in a accident and i did the body work everythings liend up and im wanting to repaint my hole car i have a 98 black honda civic coupe and can you help me on how i sand it down? and like where im suppose to sand it down
After I did the prep work on the Honda, it took exactly 2 hours to spray 3 coats color, 3 coats clear. DONE. Cost? About $75 for paint. Compare this with the "miracle" hahaha Rustoleum method.
Sure, urethane can be used on practically anything with superior results-- My Lotus is fiberglass and this is the same method. Flexible materials like bumpers, and I would venture to say a Saturn panel would wisely use an ADHESION primer to make sure paint sticks permanently regardless of the flexing inherent in this panel, and without question, Saturns are painted at the factory with urethane as shown here.
deffinately use adhesion promoter!! saturn bumpers SUCK, i used to do bumper reconditioning and i hate them. painting them is great but body work sucks they dont act like other plastics and play nice they instead piss you off until you burn them.
Yes, but thinner may leave a residue- so, bad idea. I use denatured alcohol for final cleaning. Also, it is not necessary to go to bare metal in many cases. Please see the web site link in MORE INFO upper right for lots of info online. Thanks- Neil
hello tanx for the expert advice i think im going to experiment more with my freinds cars, i am starting with my car i sanded it down to bare metal . is it ok to clean the metal before i throw primer with paint thinner . i was using acetone to clean other areas of metal before i used primer but paint thinner is cheapper and times are tough. is it okay to clean surfaces before primer with thinner
just use wax and grease remover. also use this next time b4 u sand to get the silicone greases out of the paint, this will help you keep from getting fish eyes and other contaminants.
White hides old paint better than any other color, because the titanium dioxide in white is very opaque. Its always easier and safer to paint the original color-- if you get chips, they will be less apparent in the future. Also, less paint is needed to cover. Otherwise, anything goes. Put enough color on to completely cover, then apply clear. Please see the web site in MORE INFO for details- thanks Neil
hi, my mom car has been painted in summer 2006 in pink but now it's my car and I want to paint it in black or white it's a VW golg 1999, do I have to remove the old paint or just paint over it ? there is no rust ca you help me ?
i bought your video file explaining how to paint a car. hey, thanks buddy, great stuff, step by step and explained in a way a nerd like me got it right. thanks.
oh, forgot to tell you: i watch ur vid for fun also....kind'a got this dry style entertainment element in it...surely not everybody's style, but hey, so what! cheers!
Doing some area painting on a Miata, the fiberglass top. I have just a garage and am using a spray bomb, but with lotsa prep and patience.
I understand that all spray bombs are fast-drying acrylic enamel, and actually got a spray can custom mixed to my color from NAPA paints....$38.00. Matched really well.
3 coats primer...3 coats acrylic. Job is as good as a bomb gets, but not happy with the shine (that's usual). Guess I'll do a 2000 grit sand followed by a fine cut and buff. Sound good?
You can't effectively polish any typed of acrylic enamel- it's too soft-- thus, if you want a real shine-- must go urethane per my site recommendations. Thanks- Neil
I've used as coarse as 80 to get down to metal on occasion. But you have to be careful about scoring the surface- anything not smooth is going to show later. 220 is fine for primer, but you can go finer-- some people do. However, it's more important not to leave sanding marks from an electric sander. More details on my site about grades at different points of the job. Thanks
Please see the MORE INFO box in the upper right of this page. LOTS of free info on the web site, as well as another video on YouTube. This short intro is just that- an introduction letting you know what is possible to the novice or even experienced painter. Thanks- Neil
just ordered the dvd and manual i hope it will help me out. i just recently had some golf ball size hail damage + door dings and autobody shops are charging me alot 3-4 grand. i also am a do-it-yourselfer guy so i think i i wanna give it a try. i'll start out with my old bumper and will proceed onto my hail damage if it turns out good
Hi...I've got a Triumph Spitfire that I want to spray a dark green metallic! I can't find any clips on youtube that shows how to spray a metallic basecoat!
Metallics require a bit more finesse than solid colors- details are on the web page- but to summarize, the last coat of metallic needs to be relatively light so that all the flakes are evenly distributed, and will not "puddle" because of heavy paint load.
I'm thinking about repainting my motorcycle. Its an 84 honda vf750 interceptor. I wanted to paint a different color than the standard (like black). But I'm not sure what to do about the plastic/fiber panels. are they paint-able?
Yes, urethane will work on nearly any type of material. Raw urethane bumpers benefit from an ADHESION primer, otherwise, when the flex, the paint may flake off. Otherwise, just paint as shown in the DVD and manual, and see the web page for more tips.
Color matching is a little tricky, look up the formula from the paint code on the inside door, or from the dealer. Bear in mind, if the original paint is faded (somewhat likely) the new paint won't match. Less noticeable when you paint an entire panel. "Wet" generally means "shiny", and this is acheived by properly applying paint- and looks "wet". Otherwise, finish sanding and polishing will create the "wet" look if the application is less than perfect.
Lacquer is obsolete material for painting cars-- it requires MUCH MUCH more work than urethane, and is less durable. Urethane is every bit as shiny, easier to work with, and inexpensive.
Actually, buffing is only necessary IF you do fine finish sanding after your last clear coat, or last coat (if using single stage). Urethane clear and single stage is EXTREMELY shiny if applied correctly, without doing anything else to it. Finish sanding and buffing is an absolute option. See the manual and web page for more details. Thanks- Neil
videos are great but my what if i drive the lotus instead of the lil common car? you say that i drive common car but no i drive lotus what you going to say now. keep up good work
Not sure of your comment here-- but I drive both my vintage 65 Lotus Elan, and an 86 Civic Hatchback- and painted them both, including major repair on the Honda in 2008, now on the web site-- see the link in the ABOUT THIS VIDEO box, upper right.
Thats all fantastic and swell! I watched the putty video as well, very helpfull stuff! But i have a fiberglass boat i wanna paint im sure alot of the same principles apply, but theres gotta be some fine lines in-between. I hear you can use a good auto urethane but not to sure (it's only a fresh water lake boat..not no ocean yacht or anything)? Do you have any videos for sale that pertain a little more to boats and such?
Urethane is indeed waterproof, and fiberglass repair and paint on boats is the same-- my neighbor has a fiberglass sailboat, and repaired and painted using techniques shown on the LOTUS repair page (link from the EasyPaintYourCar site) however, preparation of the wood surface may be different- check with Marine specialists.
Any auto paint dealer, and I've even seen them at the local hardware store, or Home Depot. Not really for use inside sealed areas on a regular basis- outside vented hood if you do this regularly-- but if you are a pro, you already know this.
hi neil i just put an order for your dvd i paid through paypal i was just wondering when i will recieve the download? i wasn't really sure if i specified that i wanted to online download i think i did thanks
i been painting cars for a couple years now and i really hate painting black but love painting white. reason being, nlack shows everything up whereas white doesnt, and when spraying mercs and bmw's you gotta make it good!!
anyway, nice video (but i dont drive a honda, got a merc!!) ;)
i'm scared ****less to do this on my car, but i think it needs to be done. I unfortunately uncovered some nasty previous repairs near the wheelwells. when i took the sideskirts off of my otherwise near flawless rx7 fd. it needs a repaint.
i'll check your page out to see what kind of process you use, and maybe i'll end up downloading your video! I did like your body filler video.
companies like Midas only charge $200 because they don't do any prep work and the paint won't last...nice video though!

Please visit the main site (see MORE INFO upper right) for all the info you need. Painting doesn't take long, nor is it expensive. But fixing dents can take time. But like I say on the video- You CAN do it.- Neil

heyy i checked out the site

but that putty idea nd sanding will only do for rust right and minor dents. I might end up doin that for one day and the next 3 days i might do the painting hopefully it works out !!

How would I go about making a tie-dye paint job?
I'm thinking that when it comes to putting all the peace, love and hippie colours on it I should use a leaf blower to make the swirl and such. This will be my first car so I want it to look awesome :p
shyman1 1 year ago
Do anything you want--! But that kind of design would require hand painting with a brush.
neilslade 1 year ago
no it dont thats why theres air brushes this is not the 60's
b5150b2012 1 year ago
Yes, of course. If you have access to air brush equipment you could do that kind of thing with an air-brush. But anyone wanted to actually recreate a hippie paintjob authentically, would not air brush it-- you would do it like they did 50 years ago-- with a brush.

white is a easy color to hide screw ups
codey23 2 years ago 22
Absolutely correct!
Light colors are always easier than dark colors- WAY easier than metalics and pearls.
But all are possible to get right. I've painted all colors however, and the white Lotus is the original color- and the same color as Emma Peel's car.
The Honda was also originally white.
neilslade 2 years ago
Of course it is! That's why I recommend light colors for all first time painters and why I used it on this demo.
neilslade 1 year ago
@codey23 White isn't a colour but your right about the hiding thing =/
I'm looking forward to trying this when I get a car.
Johny40Se7en 5 months ago
Of course it is, and a very popular color for every make of car, including Mercedes, Porche, and Lotus, and most every make.. White was the original color of both of my cars.

Hi Neil,
I just spent about an hour on your website and I'm definitely considering purchasing the video/book.
Thanks for the great work!
goatchay 2 years ago
Yes, The Lotus and the Honda as shown (both mine) were done with separate base/clear- although the same basic technique is used for single stage as well. Pearl can be tough for beginners however, especially dark pearls- but it can be done. I recommend solid colors for first time painters, and if done well, will look very nice, and is much easier to achieve good results than metallic or pearl. No powders are mixed by you in any case.
neilslade 2 years ago
I am about to do the same thing to the same car! Mine is currently pearl white but im going for the all black look.

What do you say about water in the compressor and going into the paint?
TheMockingbirddude 2 years ago
very rare except in cold weather- an inline filter cost $7 and fixes the risk
neilslade 2 years ago
If I wanted to paint on some designs, would I first color coat the whole car with the necessary coats, that tape off my flames or whatever and then paint those, and THEN do a clearcoat over all of it? Would I have to worry about the design chipping off since it will have a "ledge". Or should it melt in with the base color? Thanks for all you do for us beginners!
TheMockingbirddude 2 years ago
That's one way, it will work. I don't do design painting- you can research online on find good specific answers.

My neighbor has an Alfa- paint as smooth as glass- it's good to see a great Italian paint job.
neilslade 2 years ago
Spray enamel can be used, so can shoe polish. But seriously- enamel will not give the same finish result as automotive urethane- and no matter what you put on top of it, won't change that. The irony of the enamel suggestion- is that a bunch of spray cans will cost as much or more than a quart of real automotive paint- about $35 enough for a car

AntonyTrickrider 2 years ago
Paint inside a covered car port, and drape clear plastic sheeting on the sides. If you are in a driveway, you must wait for a no-wind day. Small bits of dust won't matter THAT much, they can be finish sanded out.

Oh gosh no- Both the Honda (I paid $2000) and the Lotus are mine. And to the surprise of many, a classic 60's Lotus almost certainly cost less than 90% of the new cars people buy- its just a very nice rare collectible- only 1200 made in '65, and my cost was $14,000, less than a new Miata and most other new factory cars.

one more question how many gallons do i need?
i will apreciate it if anybody gives me answers...thanks
eg8blkcivic 2 years ago
Flat colors are very difficult to keep looking good and show every imperfection- do not resist dirt well- I do not recommend. None the less it can be done, you would use base coat, and not put any clear on it. Not really a great idea. For all basic painting info as you ask for- see the site MORE INFO upper right on this page- thanks
neilslade 2 years ago
Actually you would use a base coat and put a clear coat w/a flattening agent in it... you always want to have some type of protective clear.

neilslade 2 years ago
where do you paint your cars?
mr20yr 2 years ago
I paint outdoors in my covered car port- As I point out on my site, you can paint nearly anywhere- even in your driveway- a covered area is preferred of course, and you must paint on a windless day. However- if you get dust or small particles- if you are restricted to outside, these are easily polished out and will not affect the result. One advantage of outside painting is the abundance of fresh air- better for your lungs and brain.
neilslade 2 years ago
I paint outside as well. But viewers beware, please check with local and state laws regarding to painting outside using any kind of spray on paint, be it aerosol rattlecanned, or a proper paint gun. Most places have laws against it (for environmental protection) and you could get fined heavily. I think its actually federally prohibited, but most places don't enforce it. If nothing else, do it in your back yard if possible ;)
imcnblu 2 years ago
do you have any recommendations for painting the black trim pieces that go around the windows, windshield, and the windshield wipers themselves.
like what kind of paint to buy, etc
whitepointyhat 2 years ago
I've used flexible spray that can be found at automotive trim and repair shops- like Allen and BD in Denver. It's generally used for vinyl and comes in a very wide variety of colors and finishes- i.e. satin, gloss, semi- unlike regular enamel, it is made to flex. I've used it to EXACTLY match the trim on my Lotus interior. Quite durable, dries instant.

Hi!
Im thinking about painting my car and i was wondering if you need to sand all the paint off before applying need new paint and can i use a sander?
mcxxliquid 2 years ago
Absolutely not if the original paint does not have rust or major body damage. Please see my web page for lots of free info and tips. Sanders can leave deep sanding marks that show through new paint- so you have to know how to use them carefully. You don't have to hand sand everything, but you need to have a little info first... thanks
neilslade 2 years ago
nice paint man. im in a car club and we have been doing alot of paint job's(small fenders and stuff) with cans for a while. i think the best thing that has helped with a good percentage of the fiberglass parts is after they have had the paint applied and clear coat is wet sanding the hell out of them to get them as close to factory finish as possible. we actually had a local body shop think we had someone paint them for us. proves that you dont need to spend thousands of dollars.
ghozt369 2 years ago
The most interesting thing I've found is people have no real idea how inexpensive first quality automotive urethane is- a quart runs about $31. That's enough for a typical car. You do have to get reducer and hardener, but this only adds about $15. THEN I see people trying to paint their car with RUSTOLEUM!! That's insane.
neilslade 2 years ago
exactly!!lol i mean small stuff is cool like what i have done. but in nooooo way do i condone doing a whole car with cans. that right there do it right the first time.
ghozt369 2 years ago
Rustoleum is Alkyd enamel. Ford, Isuzu, etc. have been using alkyd enamel for decades, are they insane?
TechMaven 2 years ago
No, but you are. Alkyd enamel is oil based paint and is obsolete technology used in the 50's and 60's. All modern automotive manufacturers switched to urethane long ago for a plethora of reasons, including durability, shine, flexibility, and application. Try reading the history of automotive paints on my site.
neilslade 2 years ago
I like using oil based tractor paint like rustoleum on older trucks it covers well and holds up to abuse 4 fold to car paints only bad part is how long it takes to dry but I wouldnt call it insane.
DaPandDaG 2 years ago
I've actually used it myself on a Datsun wagon- but it's not going to give the kind of results people are looking for- and as I make clear- you don't save any money nor labor in doing so, and it's certainly not going to work as well as urethane in 99% of the time.

what paint do you reccomend for show cars? how much clear?
700whpfocus 2 years ago
The materials are the same for all- acrylic urethane.
Show finishes require additional finish sanding and polishing, with sufficient layers of clear to withstand this additional work. That's it! All instructions see MORE INFO upper right.
neilslade 2 years ago
my car is severly oxidized from sitting. it is a dark blue, but it looks horrible now. what can i use to bring the color back? i've used rubbing compound...turtle wax rubbing compound, etc
700whpfocus 2 years ago
Once the color is faded- that's about it- you need to reapply color. You can use single stage paint- or better yet, new color/clear coats. You can try something like NOVUS 7- and this will improve the look some, but you'll never get back to NEW look without making new. See MORE INFO upper right. Thanks- Neil

CarFreak1242 3 years ago
After I did the prep work on the Honda, it took exactly 2 hours to spray 3 coats color, 3 coats clear. DONE. Cost? About $75 for paint. Compare this with the "miracle" hahaha Rustoleum method.
neilslade 2 years ago
my friend wants to apply 8 coats of clear on his car. what does so many coats of clear do for it? what type of paint is the best to use?
700whpfocus 3 years ago
8 coats of clear is a LOTTTTTTTTTT for any utilitarian vehicle- this level is saved for show cars, and most of this is buffed and polished off.
3 coats clear will do fine for most, although if you are doing fine finish sanding and polishing, you need 5-6, because it will go as you polish.

neilslade 2 years ago
i own a saturn and as you know it has those plastic or whatever panels, do you paint those differently, and do u address that in ur video
sp3cialfx28 3 years ago
Sure, urethane can be used on practically anything with superior results-- My Lotus is fiberglass and this is the same method. Flexible materials like bumpers, and I would venture to say a Saturn panel would wisely use an ADHESION primer to make sure paint sticks permanently regardless of the flexing inherent in this panel, and without question, Saturns are painted at the factory with urethane as shown here.
neilslade 3 years ago
deffinately use adhesion promoter!! saturn bumpers SUCK, i used to do bumper reconditioning and i hate them. painting them is great but body work sucks they dont act like other plastics and play nice they instead piss you off until you burn them.

hello tanx for the expert advice i think im going to experiment more with my freinds cars, i am starting with my car i sanded it down to bare metal . is it ok to clean the metal before i throw primer with paint thinner . i was using acetone to clean other areas of metal before i used primer but paint thinner is cheapper and times are tough. is it okay to clean surfaces before primer with thinner
69fordgreenmonster 3 years ago
Acetone will damage any nearby existing paint, so avoid.
neilslade 3 years ago
just use wax and grease remover. also use this next time b4 u sand to get the silicone greases out of the paint, this will help you keep from getting fish eyes and other contaminants.
tbird1964390 3 years ago
i bought a nissan s14 its primered black you think i can paint it white or do i have to primer it another color for the white to show?
henloy 3 years ago
White hides old paint better than any other color, because the titanium dioxide in white is very opaque. Its always easier and safer to paint the original color-- if you get chips, they will be less apparent in the future. Also, less paint is needed to cover. Otherwise, anything goes. Put enough color on to completely cover, then apply clear. Please see the web site in MORE INFO for details- thanks Neil

Sound good?
JohnnyRock2000 3 years ago
You can't effectively polish any typed of acrylic enamel- it's too soft-- thus, if you want a real shine-- must go urethane per my site recommendations. Thanks- Neil
neilslade 3 years ago
A question here about sanding grits, for any experts...this is what I have read and would like to know if it is correct
Sanding down to metal...150 to 220 grit
After primer coat 320 to 400 grit
After Base Color coat...600 grit
After Clear Coat (between multiple layers of clear coat)...2000 grit.
Power buff after final clear coat.
Does this look right??
Thx.
JohnnyRock2000 3 years ago
I've used as coarse as 80 to get down to metal on occasion. But you have to be careful about scoring the surface- anything not smooth is going to show later. 220 is fine for primer, but you can go finer-- some people do. However, it's more important not to leave sanding marks from an electric sander. More details on my site about grades at different points of the job. Thanks

Any help?
Kevin.
kdj69 3 years ago
Metallics require a bit more finesse than solid colors- details are on the web page- but to summarize, the last coat of metallic needs to be relatively light so that all the flakes are evenly distributed, and will not "puddle" because of heavy paint load.

aruseb 3 years ago
Yes, urethane will work on nearly any type of material. Raw urethane bumpers benefit from an ADHESION primer, otherwise, when the flex, the paint may flake off. Otherwise, just paint as shown in the DVD and manual, and see the web page for more tips.

after painting my car i noticed that is was a little fadded than when i first painted i want a wet look how do i achive that.
BIGGAV619 3 years ago
Color matching is a little tricky, look up the formula from the paint code on the inside door, or from the dealer. Bear in mind, if the original paint is faded (somewhat likely) the new paint won't match. Less noticeable when you paint an entire panel. "Wet" generally means "shiny", and this is acheived by properly applying paint- and looks "wet". Otherwise, finish sanding and polishing will create the "wet" look if the application is less than perfect.
neilslade 3 years ago
Isn't lacquer is the key to that shiny look and a must for all paint to protect it obviously a good solid colour should be applied first
ant3jacko 3 years ago
Lacquer is obsolete material for painting cars-- it requires MUCH MUCH more work than urethane, and is less durable. Urethane is every bit as shiny, easier to work with, and inexpensive.
neilslade 3 years ago
you need to buff, bufff, buff, after you are done
pwnedbyakid 3 years ago
Actually, buffing is only necessary IF you do fine finish sanding after your last clear coat, or last coat (if using single stage). Urethane clear and single stage is EXTREMELY shiny if applied correctly, without doing anything else to it. Finish sanding and buffing is an absolute option. See the manual and web page for more details. Thanks- Neil

Do you have any videos for sale that pertain a little more to boats and such?
Slewis2304 3 years ago
Urethane is indeed waterproof, and fiberglass repair and paint on boats is the same-- my neighbor has a fiberglass sailboat, and repaired and painted using techniques shown on the LOTUS repair page (link from the EasyPaintYourCar site) however, preparation of the wood surface may be different- check with Marine specialists.
