i think this is REALLY important--i go to a school and the dresscode @ my school is VERY strict--- shirts need to be up to the middle of the arm, shirts need to be up to the collar bone, skirts (only) need to be covering the knee, and all the clothing needs to be solid---i soooooo agree with you on this--WAY TO GO VANESSA!!!!!!!!!!

I gotta say thank u for explaining the reasons as to y girls my age do stuff like that. you come to a point in your life where you kinda want to be a rebel and most parents forget that. everyone goes through that stage.. no need to deny it. its all apart of growing up. style is one way to express yourself and show people who you are. if girls cant do that, like u said, they will go to other extremes. my advice, let teens be teens

The problem is we worry so much about attending to our kids "need" to express themselves and so little on their educations. I understand fitting in is important, but not to the point of putting themselves/reputations at risk. Kids need BOUNDARIES! I refuse to let my daughters wear this type of low-cut clothing and they understand why I disapprove. So, Ms. vvanpetten, I must firmly disagree with your suggestion of "pick your battles." Set standards for your kids to live up to...not down to.

Ok, I'm 17 and I have experimented in sooo many ways. I've died my hair every color under the sun and gone through many styles. At this point in my life though I've completely reformed from the goth look i was sporting last year to a polished look that im comfortable with and i know my parents appreciate. I think parents should let their daughters experiment with clothing, but at some point a parent should look at their daughter and say,"No way, you are not going anywhere in that!"

Advice - tell your daughter to go and ask her father, what he finds sexy and looking good...well...assuming if dad is aware of womens fashion. Dad will pick things right and will enjoy the show. Vanessa, I believe you see that dressing inapropreately is linked to parents anyway. If a daughter sees her mom in front of the mirror for hours, stressing out before going out and worring a lot about if this dress is right...then doughter will do the same...worry if she looks good enough...its a confidence issue. Whats sad is that media featuring sex very openly because it sells and forgets that there is more to women then just their bodies.

Another extreme is that overprotective insecure moms are very selective and pushy what boys wear as well. I remember that I never got the color, style or anything that I wanted to wear. Like I would tell "Mom, I want that black shirt like Zorro has!" ..in few days she would bring Me a gray sweater. Or I wanted dark sunglasses like terminator, and she would bring me blue transparent nerdy looking ones. I was very mad, but I had to wear things so she would not be upset. Moms - you have issues!

Males are attracted to the most fertile females..and fertility is not dependent on the top she wears or what brand it is. Same as it doesn't show what kind of person a guy is by what kind of car he drives. Girls would be much better of showing off their hip-to-waist ration. Get rid of "love handles" asap! I hate those dresses women wear those days, with low cut, but so baggy on their waist. Very unattractive!

There is no need for girls to wear low cuts and short skirts, men are pretty good at scanning (x-raying) through that. After some experience any men can predict what womans body is like with precision to very intimate details, even if she wears regular tshirt and normal jeans. This issue is not about clothing or fashion, it is about understanding sexual polarities.

Every man knows an important guideline "The way she dresses is the way she wants you to perceive her". As a man, I have no problem with girls dressing slutty. Society needs such girls for a healthy balance. Next thing is that "I want her to be my gf" thought doesn't even hit me when I see girl dressed inappropriately. And, in response I rarely hear something intelligent, but very often famous girly "I dunno" line.
