  • if players today would just CHOKE UP...

  • Cool video.

Let Pete in to the Hall, Bud S.

  • are you related to Larry MacPhail?

  • Anyone who says Pete Rose had heart, and not talent, should be smacked across the face.

One way you can tell that this swing is great, regardless of the perfect mechanics, is that at 0:55, you can see how quickly the ball comes off the bat. There is no deadening of the bat, as you might see with a bad swing. With a good swing, no deviation of the elbows, etc, maximum energy is produced. This ball was hit a mile.

  • Pete Rose knew what baseball took: hard work. Now that we live in an era of immediatcy and entitlement, I don't know if we'll ever see another one like him again. :(

  • Pete Rose is a bad ass! One of the greatest hitters of all time thats for sure. He didnt use steroids either, just pure raw talent you cant dispute that. Yea he bet and lied about it but that has nothing to do with his ability to hit the ball. I think he should be a hall of famer. Even then steroid using ball players such as Bonds and Clemens still have to have an great amount of talent to produce the results they did in their careers.Steroid using bb players should be banned but not Pete Rose!!

  • is it me or is his swing is so early for an outside pitch.

  • @JohnPark96 It's you.

  • HALL OF FAME HERE THIS: Pete Rose belongs in the Hall. The Hall and Pete both lose when you keep this senseless stupidity of banning him from what he deservedly earned with his accomplishments. Cooperstown Hall is about the fans NOT the Hall and the people who run it. Most fans want this ban lifted for the benefit of the fans, Rose and the Hall.

  • pete rose should be in the hall of fame, betting on baseball is better than ruining the game by taking steroids!

  • The best ever! Numbers prove it. Anyone who hates Rose is just a jealous hater!

  • Charlie hustle, in my mind as a young ball player growing up Pete Rose was the greatest. Hell, I tought my son how to do the Pete Rose slide, and he hit an inside the park HR at four yrs old and came in with the Pete Rose,,, Awesome!

  • Ted Williams is the greatest hitter of all time. Teddy ballgame. And he lost 5 years serving his country.

  • @mangetpaid teddy williams was good but he couldnt match joe dimaggio nor pete rose..ted williams has how many rings and records? 0

  • good video coach...

  • Career .303 hitter. Not a pimple on the ass of Ty Cobb.

    Please.

  • Ty Cobb couldn't compete in today's league. He didn't have to deal with split-finger fastballs, relief pitchers who throw 90+ MPH, etc. Your comment shows your ignorance of evolution. I'll bet you think the 4 horsemen could play in today's NFL! PLEASE.

  • @SuperBaseballnut,

Well, first, as a member of the Society for Baseball Research, who has forgotten more about the game than you'll ever know, let me ask you this, smartass:

In your opinion, would Williams (Ted) or DiMaggio (Joe) be able to "compete" against todays pitchers???

    Very curious.

This is NOT a trick question. However, in honor of Pete I'm layin a small bet on your answer.

  • they are starting to reinstate hikm

  • He has the most hits of all time. Are you drunk? Sure, I'd agree that there are many players in the Hall I'd rank ahead of Pete, but to deny him entry because you don't believe he did enough as a player is laughable. He's definitely in my top 30 of all time. Get lost.

  • I 100% agree....maybe not on the overrated part, but being reinstated.

  • ur face is overrated

  • If you happen to encounter him and you are a Reds fan, he treats you like royalty.

Pete is one of the greatest players ever. He deserves to be in the hall of fame.

Bud Selig should be banned for life because his conduct in the 1994 strike and the all star "tie" did ACTUAL damage to baseball, Pete was nothing but an asset.

  • @wcmi92 Well said. I'm in Cincy. Walk up to Rose and ask him about what Nolan Ryan would do with him on an 0-3 count with nobody on. I hope you have an hour to kill because Rose will talk baseball with anybody all day. He's made some mistakes but, noone argues he loves the game and never had the "Hollywood" bullshit attitude. Put him in the Hall or why have a Hall?

  • @BengalsHatchet 3-0 count

  • @BengalsHatchet I wish my son could meet this man!

  • @wcmi92 he was busted in the 70's or 80's for drugs and illegal gambeling too which was another reason for not getting in. even though this guys one of the best and most exciting ball players ever

  • who does the commentary on this video? well done.

  • THe MLB sucks now! I think Pete needs to be reinstated to the game. Look at all these Carribean players who lie about their age, take steroids and fake injuries.

  • Like Manny? LOL

  • hey not all latins do tht just dominicans

  • he wasn't an outstanding hitter he just played so many damn years

  • Are you nuts! A .303 career hitter. And to be able to be productive that long!

  • he was good but he was just a slap hitter. He's overrated just like ichiro except he doesn't even have his defense

  • Ichiro...200 hits every year..."overrated"?

  • look at his league/park adjusted OPS (OPS+), he's a great player but he's not extremely valuable. He was for a couple years but he isn't now. Or look at his VORP or WARP, Ichiro is overrated. His high average doesn't make him more valuable then a guy who hits .270 with 30 homers and 40 doubles.

  • The thing is...He could hit 30 homers with 40 doubles, easily...The same couldn't be said for sluggers (hitting 200 hits EVERY year that is)...Cheers!

  • There is no way he could get close to either, he never has and even at his best he wasn't even close. Pujols is probably the only guy who could hit 30 homers/40 doubles with 200+ hits, although it's unfair to compare anyone to him

  • He certainly could if he sacrificed his batting average and pulled line drives, as he very well could...This guy is a "slap" hitter because he feels that is how he can best utilize his skills...by design. Not because he can't hit. I live in Japan where there have been numerous in-depth anaylisis shows wherin Ichiro explains just how he "intentionally" hits those little bloopers over third and short...That kind of precision skill is absolutely remarkable...Bill James aside...Cheers!

  • Rose played every position, and was named an all-star for damn near every position. Rose was as consistent as they come, and certainly by no means overrated. I don't think anyone truly considers Rose to be the greatest hitter of all-time, because by no means was he, but he played so much better than what he should have because he outplayed his own talent by making up for his weaknesses and flaws by outhustling EVERYONE. By no means overrated. Neither is Ichiro. Slap hitters aren't overrated.

  • Exactly, he was a good, consistent hitter. No more and no less

  • Right. So I don't consider either Rose nor Ichiro to be overrated.

  • Yeah, no more, no less. Most career hits - 4,256 Most career singles - 3,215 Most career doubles by a switch hitter - 746 Most career total bases by a switch hitter - 5,752 Most seasons of 200 or more hits - 10 Most consecutive seasons of 100 or more hits - 23 Record for playing in the most winning games - 1,972 Natl League records: Most career doubles - 746 Most career games with 5 or more hits - 10 Modern (post-1900) record for longest consec game hitting streak - 44
  • Dummy - check out all the gold gloves. And he led the league in triples how many years? Slap hitter? Read a stat once in a while.

  • I think it's interesting that in the 70's and 80's the way that coaches taught players how to hit a baseball is the exact opposite of what coaches preach nowadays.

  • thanks oldirtybastard for actually commening on something to do with how to swing a bat.

  • True, mainly because today's baseball game is glorified softball - especially in the AL.

All the advantages go to the hitter - including being allowed to crowd the plate without fear of getting drilled.

It was a completely different game when Rose played - a much better product.

  • I wouldn't necessarily say that there's an advantage to the hitters. I also disagree with there not being a fear of getting drilled because there never SHOULD be a fear of getting hit. So being said, that "fear" shouldn't change anything. I personally believe that hitters today are just plain and simply better than the pitchers.

  • 'there never SHOULD be a fear of getting hit.'

Nonsense. Inside pitching is part of the game.

...and if a hitter does something to show up a pitcher, he should know that he might get his back tattooed.

That said, I do not endorse throwing near a batter's head - and the same goes for a pitcher who pumps his fist and goes overboard.

  • But all that hockey gear that batters wear these days should be banned...Helmets only, I say...get rid of the shit they gotta give to first base coaches...You wear it up to bat...You gotta lug it around to home, I say...

  • There should never be a fear of getting hit. A team player should hope to be hit.

  • Interesting statement. Good for confidence

  • Ray Chapman would disagree

  • I don't think so, but I believe that he would agree to not get hit in the head, and he would have invented the helmet himself if he knew what was to happen to him. You probably should not use such definitive language when making up the opinions of dead people.

  • One of the biggest assholes in baseball of all time allong with ty cobb.

  • umm...no...you are!, AssHole!

  • Right, because i never cheated on my taxes, i never bet agients the team i managed, i dont hold records for carrer hits,at bats and games played and i'm still not in the hall of fame. Plus,im not racist.

  • Pete's not an asshole. He just has a gambling problem.

  • Look up Ray Fosse.

  • I looked it up. I don't get it though.

  • It was the 1970 All-star game.

Pete rose scored the winning run by plowing fosse(the catcher) at home plate and seaperating his shoulder.

Kid was one of the best in Indians history.

He was never the same after rose jacked him up.

  • That's true. But I don't think Pete intended to jinx Fosse for the rest of his career. Pete was just trying to score the winning run.

  • pete wasnt an asshole he was just too competitive he loved to win and would do anything to win and thats why he ran him over

  • exactly. my dad has met him in person a number of times and he is deffinatly not an asshole.

  • I've met him in person. My wife's grandma knows him well. He's treats fans as well as anyone in sports treats fans.

  • One of the best? He couldn't hit even before he got knocked down. You act like Rose ruined his career. He still ended the year with a great year for a catcher, and only played for the Indians for two more seasons, and even in those two seasons he wasn't awful. When he made his return to Cleveland, he still managed to hit .301 in something like 90 games. Rose didn't mean to hurt him. If you watch the play, Rose immediately gets up to check if Fosse was alright.

  • thanks man i think this is wat i've been doing wrong with my swing, my gym teacher tells me to extend my arms b4 i make contact, but now that i kno about pete rose's swing i might be able to do better

  • Legendary ump Doug Harvey rated rose the best hitter in the NL during his time. Rose was a winner because he was a difficult out. With Manny Ramirez I think we've seen someone who is both a difficult out and also able to win a game with one swing which is very rare.

  • I like what Mickey Mantle said about Pete Rose: "If I had played my career hitting singles like Pete, I'd wear a dress."

  • Your username suits you. Most career doubles by a switch hitter - 746, Most career total bases by a switch hitter - 5,752, Ranks 74th all-time in triples (Mickey Mantle is not in the top 154. Who is a slap hitter??????

  • I've never seen his technique dissected like this before to give us all a REAL hitting lesson. If it had to be anyone, you could not have picked a better player than the hit king himself! Thanks for posting!!!!!!!

  • It's not true that Nolan Ryan deemed Rose "no big thing." If you read his book, "Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible" he includes rose on a list of only ten guys who gave him the most trouble of all throughout his career. Said that Rose had a great knowledge of the strikezone, was very intense, and very hard to outthink.

  • Pete Rose was hard to strike out he always puts up a fight, it'll take a army of piches to get him out.

  • He was a damm good hitter, just not a home run hitter. He didn't extend himself, much like a wade boggs or, rod carew.

  • nolan ryan says that pete rose was no big thing for him.

  • hes amazing he should be in the Hall Of Fame this is bullshit

  • Yes, everyone has their own style but only one has the most hits ever after 100+ years of baseball. Watch it again and learn!

  • Yeah, doh!—he's swinging at a baseball. Every single guy who ever played the game has his own style. "The roll of the lead arm"??? What a joke. You can't go to college and "learn" how to hit a baseball. There is no one way, so "teaching" Pete is just plain stupid. "Drive with the backside," fellas. LOL.

  • thats wats up!
