I don't like at all! He wants to do more than necessary (longer notes), and it's boring and the voice is not very pleasant to hear, and shouting words! And how he sung the figaros! I don't know how people can be as much enthusiast!
@alllloi Ah yes I know about the lyric. I've the score, I'm sorry, there are some parts wrong (and not because of the lyrics) for example 0:32 the last "LA". Excuse me do you think the "presto" can be sung as worse as here because of the word? 1:09 "AH…" wrong" while it's to congratulate himself! and it's ony the begining! Excuse me but for me one of the best interpretation is by Hermann Prey directed by abado!
Sono quasi certo che Rossini intendesse questo quando scrisse Almaviva, ossia l'inutil precauzione (un Figaro Basso-comico)!!! Meraviglioso Panerai!!!
Gobsmacked! Knew he had a long career at the top. I have him as Germont with Schwarzkopf in the early 50s). Could not imagine that he was singing this well and looking so fit nearly 40 years later. Bravo Rolando and bravo Onegin.
What a terrific and stunning performance. Although after hearing this aria from many baritones I still prefer Hampsons version from 1991 Mr. Panerai does an excellent job here.
I don't know if anyone has sung this at a faster tempo, but I'm certain few have sung this aria as well. Panerai is 65 here, and still commands the role with authority and authenticity. His RAI 1954 version under Carlo Maria Giulini is also on YouTube; here he is as engaging as he was 35 years earlier. A great artist. Bravo!
Well, I don't know about not being at his best - as I never liked him in the 50s and 60s recordings.
Here however, I love him. His breath is endless (just listen to the last part of the aria (Ah bravo figaro 4.04) all on a single breath! And actually I prefer the timbre of the voice now.
There is such character and nuance in this aria - listen to what he does with the 3 "ahime"s - each one is different (3.25 and onwards.)
Of course he wasn't at his best anymore, but who cares? He had a great career, sung with the best and he's teaching young singers now, afaik- a life devoted to music. Just great.
one more time paneray the best!!!!!!!

Lovely nostalgia, but only when you know his great work in the fifties and sixties.

The tempo is positively ridiculous. Has this aria ever been heard at a faster tempo?
RichardJonsson 2 years ago
Yeah, by Titta Ruffo. Panerai takes 4:01 from the first main note (discounting 'La la la lera') to the last, Ruffo 3:55.

At 65 this is excellent singing with no real sign of decline. This is a truly great artist with an exceptional and long and durable service as a
fine actor-singer. His diction is among the best and a school in itself. I´ll bet he sounds good still in his late eighties...
klokheten 2 years ago
thank you His diction is excellent so many just ''la la" their way through the last part
