I don't think this was about "grooving." The purpose is clearly, "Hey, check this craziness out!" And it is! Sooo... Yah! ...Badass man! Don't expect it on the radio any time soon but sick!
@guitarbr0 But if it sounds like crap, doesn't groove and has no emotion what is the point Mr BA? Mile's obviously didn't teach you that one. Neither did Scotty.
@spongey222 I think its a music nerd thing. Its just fun. Playing the instrument is just really fun... that's why I play it, just as much as having it to play to please the ear. ...Experiment... shred, bullshit harmonies, bullshit poly rhythms. I do it for hours sometimes. Its not so much about grooving or creating emotion, in THIS particular case.
@guitarbr0 Yeah but that's not stuff you should be performing. That stuff's fine for practice, but when you play play with purpose. Not just for shredding out of time, bullshit scales. That's just boring. I find it much more fun to play something that sounds good because its pleasing to the ear and people will enjoy it. That's what music is all about. Conveying emotion through sound.
@spongey222 Well, I guess it depends on where or who you perform it for. Maybe this guy didn't know that stuck up jazzers who think they're holier than thou would come here and rag on his video. Or maybe he did and didn't care... I don't know. Its a concept video. ...Speedy intervalic bullshit. And if this guy wasn't bored doing this, which clearly he wasn't, than it must have been fun. And thats all that matters in this case. Play because you like to.
@guitarbr0 You don't have to be a "stuck up jazzer" to think music sounds good or bad. The majority of people cannot hear things that you or I could so they like something that sounds pleasing and grooves. If it doesn't do one or either of those then they aren't interested. I try to listen to music from a non-musician's point of view most of the time. When I first listened to Radiohead I loved it cause it was awesome music and then I took it apart from musician's point of view and loved it even
@spongey222 Eh... I try not to listen from anyone's standpoint. I just play. If you like it, thanks... If not, go listen to something else. The only time I'm really interested in sounding like I'm playing for the people is when I'm doing session work. But that's mainly rock, country, pop... I'm all hardcore about my time, idioms, tone... But if I'm not working, I play for myself... whatever I'm interested in. Not always a performing monkey.
@spongey222 Speaking of time... This guy's time is pretty spot on... I admit is slightly shy here and there but its not like its all over the place. I was really curious after reading everyone's shit on him. First of all, the head is played along to a midi track. Its not like the computer is out of time. Second, I slowed this shit down. I don't know why I was wasting my time, killing curiosity, but the problem is sooo not this guy's time.
Whaaat... You guys are all hating on this dude? The head was ridiculously obvious, for that one dude who couldn't recognize it. I'm sure this guy knows he isn't really "swinging." ...Whatever that means. This craziness isn't meant to swing, or sound lyrical, soulful, or with some sort of obvious melodic motif to follow. Its just all chop city. He's showing you his penis and all of your negative feed back is reflection of jealously.
@guitarbr0 Dude, you obviously don't know what you're talking about so just don't try. I think the problem these people have is that its not grooving. His time is all over the place and what use are chops when you're not in time.
I don't know what I'm talking about?! F**k you... My ensemble teacher toured with Miles, I jam with Scott Henderson twice a week and I have my BA. I admit this guy's time isn't great but its not like I couldn't transcribe it. I wouldn't because he doesn't have anything here I'd like to add to my vocabulary but its not like this guy doesn't have chop. Use your ears.
Also, I think you should leave more space in your solo. Do more with less. It kind of seems like your just showing all your chops. But technically, flawless.

deffinetly leave some gaps, you could do loads more wth the trumpet stuff aswell but i like what youve gone for
gingerleyham 2 years ago
That was great. I'm not too convinced with the transition from the octaves to the sweeps in the solo though.
The little flourishes in during the head out were a nice touch though.

What's the head? Did you write it yourself?
Also, I think you should leave more space in your solo. Do more with less. It kind of seems like your just showing all your chops. But technically, flawless.
