The very kind of democracy that has brought south Africa to its current disastrous poverty , The very kind of democracy that Mandela who once so was in favor of freedom and equally for all south Africans turned 360 degrees in his political opinions under IMF supervision !
Look what they did in that country , or in Afghanistan !
Used Blitz Critz Natzi style attacks in Iraq , Afghanistan now they want to start on Iran
How can we trust a government that fraudulently brings Bush to power? Bush said we wanted to bring freedom and democracy in Iraq!
Oh yeah , we all knew what kind democracy Bush wanted to bring to Iraq . Free market economy just to bring democracy for those putrid warmongering Capitalists of Shell and Construction companies , etc

i think Roger Cohen has done a sincere job as a foreign journalist under severe restrictions to represent the truth that the people of Iran wanted conveyed to the world. It must have been a very emotional time, (a cross between the french revolution, the holocaust, and the killing fields of cambodia). Thank you for your coverage.
I think some Americans are misinformed but on average US society is more open to the influences of change than other countries...and it is time for NYT to put a reasonable cap on the resource and tie it spent on Iran and get back with N Korea

What surprises me about this event is what made the people of Iran think they would ever have a fair election? As to Mr. Cohen's point about American's getting a more rounded view of Iranian society because of this government crackdown...how presumptuous of him to suppose what Americans know or think. Many Americans could guess that living in a repressive dictatorship would bring about dissatisfaction among many people. I find Cohen to be an elitist who sheds little light on this event.
Very insightful. I watched all Roger's reports from Tehran on Charlie Rose. Thanks for showing such spirit in those chaotic circumstances and giving true journalism a tremendous contribution.
Well Mr. Cohen you kept writing that Mahmoud was rational and played down any extremism from him. I guess it takes a stolen election yo see the real Mahmoud. How about giving us a mea culpa saying how naive you were about Mahmoud.
Cohen has got it wrong Mousavi was never close to Ayatallah Khomeyni

Roger Cohen is a person who wants to be fooled. He lets himself become a tool for Islamic fascists.

I would also like to say , I have been waiting for years for people to demand freedom and a more open society. I am only 20 years old
but I have been studying Iranian Society for 10 years. I can speak farsi and I even look Iranian, because I am spanish.
I work for a certain department in Virginia.
My job for the last two years was to get information about the young generation of Iran and introduce details on how to undermine the authority.

maybe i am not part of the
dumb downed masses in america
Islam is a great religion , but when it is used to oppress people it turns people away from it. A lot of young people in Iran
are not even religious at all
