So did the germans have any idea that the Allies were gonna invade?
and when did they figure out they were facing an invasion? (you know was it like they were just sitting around guarding and sitting in there bunkers, or were they just lying and waiting for them?).
@JustAnotherYtuber Senior German Officers thought the invasion was going to take place in the Pas de Calais region, at high tide and on a non-full moon night. The actual invasion took place in Normandy, at low tide (to try to avoid mined obstacles set at the high tide mark in the first few waves) and on full moon (so the invading troops/paratroopers/pilots etc could see). The Germans (and German prisoners captured in the East) defending Normandy realised that it was a serious attack....
But again, senior German officers thought Normandy was only a diversion and held back from reinforcing the Normandy defenders for several days. And Hitler wasn't even woken up and informed of the attack. A complete mess from the German side.
@IndianaJonesWiki76 In a way it is tied in with what made Omaha beach so hard to secure on D-Day: the high bluff with little road access. A few hundreds yards in either direction are two of the important draws off the beach. The road today barely reaches these spots so most of the holiday makers stick to the accessable spots a few miles away. Plus it is a massive beach and I probably recorded it mid week, so less people about.
@Soccerlifenors All over the place, you just cannot see them in this clip. There is quite an extensive bunker system just to the east (left if looking at the bluff) of where this was recorded. I've recorded some bunkers: take a look at some of my other videos.
@dbhorn Do you mean me? The sound in the second half of the video is from Saving Private Ryan's famous opening segment. And I walked up the beach at normal speed but speeded up the clip to make it look like I was running.
I saw an interview on TV of an old German who said they were coming straight at him. He fired 10,000 rounds from a MG42. He was eighteen years old at the time.
Quick tip. If you can get to the American Cemetery Normandy when it first opens (might be 9.30am but check online) because it gets really busy after 10am. Then head down to Omaha beach itself and take a look back up the bluff. On a sunny day it looks lovely but at the same time terrifying.
Place yourself in the shoes of a young American soldier looking up at the bluff. Because on 6th June 1944 the bluff was full of barbed wire, machine guns and German soldiers not really happy to see you. That is terrifying.
It is Omaha. Please tell me where there are bluffs overlooking Utah Beach? The land behind the entire area of Utah beach was flooded. The only way off them was across four causeways. In my clips you see trees on the bluffs behind the beach; They border the American Cemtery at St Laurent.

They've done a great job at cleaning the beach, but you can still find shells there. Thank you for this video. Puts things into perspective.
Bless everyone who died, on both sides, that day.

you never pointed out that you were talking from the soldiers point of view.
i know for a fact, that if i was one of the first to land in the Higgins boats on Omaha, that i would definetly have died.
