  • @cameralabs hi thanks for the review. I was wondering how does this compare to more popular SLRs such as Canon 60d?

  • @Gerarddddddddddddddd To be fair you should compare the newer Lumix G3. I really like it, although again to be fair, it's more aimed against upper-entry-level DSLRs like the T3i / 600D than the 60D. There's loads of details in my reviews of both at cameralabs . com...

  • yo kiero 1a

  • hi Gordon... uhmm would you recomend a camera such as this to sports enthusiast?

  • @yobmas722 Yes, or one of the newer models like the G3 or Sony NEX 5N...

  • @cameralabs thanks.. :)

  • How long is 40mm zoom? 2x?3x?

  • hey i need help should i get the olympus pen e-p1 or the lumix g2

  • Curious, do you see ILCs like the G1's successors kicking the entry level DSLRs off the market before too long? I'm especially curious of the potential of the upcoming NEX-7.

  • @rml695 Yes i do, but there's a lot of people to convince...

  • @cameralabs Agreed. The second the NEX-7 is in stores I'm gonna head on over & take a look at one. I've been considering the D7000 but now that the NEX-7 is coming out it may be just as good if not better. Certainly smashing a full DSLR quality system into a compact camera is an amazing feat, though I think the purists will disagree.

  • can this camera record video?

  • Thank you so much! Just bought mine and this was super helpful :)

  • I bought the E-420 but after comparing it to this G1 camera it's a lot better in all parameters. I sold the E-420 & bought this one instead. Paid around £260 in the UK + battery £80 or £90 from a Panasonic shop here in Bournemouth.

  • I can't wait for the g3 review.

  • nice shirt!

  • nice shirt!

  • thanks for the great review. im thinking of getting this camera over the Nikon Coolpix P100. Which camera do you think is a better choice in terms of picture quality and video quality?

  • This may just be the highest quality Youtube review that I have seen in my life. You just convinced me to buy the camera.

  • what is the best lumix g

  • @LukeyyyxD

If you do not fit a lens, how do you expect the light to be focussed on the sensor?

Were you asking if it could be used with a pinhole?

  • This is the best video review I have ever seen. Great Job! This review covers everything for the new owner. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • hi Gordon, i've got a fz38 from a month and i love it, but in low light shooting, the noise is too heavy for the small sensor so i want to sell it for a G1, with its big sensor, the incredible viewfinder and the 460k and not fixed screen.

The price between the fz38 + accessories and the g1 + basic lens its almoust the same so, i'm doing a good thing or not?

    Thanks, Enzo from naples!

  • you're the best!

  • @apindayer10 yeah, it means you can only take photos. but lumix have a new camera out called the G2, it's basically the same but it does video.

  • sony nex is the smallest DSLR

  • @m75videos did you check the date of this review? I've also reviewed the NEX 5 at cameralabs . com - and neither it nor the G1 are DSLRs becuase they don't have mirrors or optical viewfinders.

  • Hi Gordon! I just want you start by saying your website has been very helpful!! I only go there for advise on how to use my DSLR...

Will you be reviewing the Panasonic G2? how does it compare to the GH1?

    many thanks,

    Aelx

  • Hi Gorden, thanks for this viedo, great tour! I was wondering if you could help me. I bought this camera 2 days ago & as I'm learning to use it. For some reason I can't access some of the menu option like in your video @ 7:00 when I press the Q.menu the 6 first options are greyed out. Would you have any idea why this is happening? thanks

  • @Frenuk Maybe you are in Auto mode, which removes most of the settings. Try Program P mode.

  • @cameralabs: You're star!!!! I should have realised this! Oh and thanks you for replying so quick

  • i got this camera today :) and i love it !!!

  • @hoyKEBIN

    Thanks for that!

  • I really don't see why this is better than a D40... I read a tech review in the Economist and got excited because they made it seem like it would be as small as a compact digital camera but it's not really, is it?

  • @sarith21 this is old. look at the lumix g2. wayy better

  • thank you for the review, excellent.

i just bought this in greece from a shop it had it on offer from 700E to only 249E!!!

  • Hi I,m new to the game and looking to buy a digital camera, Bridge or DSLR, was told DSLRS have far better image quality as they have a bigger sensor looking at the reviews on cameralabs quite liked this Lumix DMC-G1, but in the cameralabs real life resolution test the G1 is compared to the cannon SX10 which I presume has a smaller sensor, but I thought the image quality of the SX10 was slightly better so my theory of bigger sensor better quality isnt holding up, any info advise wellcome.

  • Look at the noise results too.

  • @cameralabs At the end you say it doesnt have a movie mode, but i see it says video mode next to a button, does this camera shoot videos?

  • @RawsWave Do you mean the button which says' film mode'? That just applies different colour styles. The G1 does not have video recording.

  • @cameralabs Ah i see, thanks for the help!

  • @weebromat you would know if you watched the first 30 seconds of the video.

  • just bought one for 400 quid :) not bad!

  • @NAkersDouglas i bought it for 249 euros!

  • @kostis007 whoa my parents got ripped off, mine was over 550 euro, where did you buy yours?

  • @foreveremo from a greek shop

it was an offer for 24 hours for limited stock.

    i got really lucky!

  • @kostis007 and how much did you pay?

  • @SwitchFakieNollie 249 euros for the camera body and the 14-45 lens

  • @kostis007 Thats cheap. Is it ANY good then? :)

  • @SwitchFakieNollie yes i like it .but im a bit noob in the dslr section and im still trying to learn the 423523523 different settings :D

  • Hi Gordon, if i may I'd like to provide you with a little constructive criticism. I've noticed that in many of your videos, your voice is very clear and crisp when you are behind the camera, but then, when you stand in front of it, your voice fades out significantly and, for some, it may be hard to hear. May I suggest you use a clip on mic for your upcoming reviews? Other than that, great work! You are really helpful!

  • I've just bought a new mic I hope to use in the near future, buit part of the problem is an echoey room, but hopefully it'll still be better than before.

  • hi.

can i use this lens: Tamron AF 75-300mm with the g1? i know that you need a ring but its not a poblem that it doesent have o.i.s.? thanx

  • You are a very profissional reviewer.

Excellent information, congratulations for a job well done.

  • Apparently it is not a proper dslr-something to do with the viewfinder!

  • I have a choice of this or the cann 1000D.

    What should I get?

  • go to cameralabs . com and check the cons and pros there... i prefer this panasonic over Canon 1000D ... but that doesn't mean G1 is better... Look at lens range as well ...

  • Hey im thinking about upgrading from my panasonic fz-28 to an DSLR... would this camera do well at sports photography?

  • how much does this run?

im looking for a new camera for my ongoing interest in photography (:

  • Am thinking of getting this camera ,,but please could someone tell me the bad side of it ,av never had a pro camera before and i am wondering if this is the right one for me thanks

  • Check my review at cameralabs . com - there's a full list of pros and cons there.

  • i reacently got my first ever camera for starting with (panasonic lumix TZ5) i love photography and this looks like the perfect DSLR to beggin with

  • is this better than the nikon d60?

  • what's the optical zoom? with lens and without. thank you

  • 45/14=3.2zoom

  • Hey, nice review.

I am a car photographer and I like to film fast cars in action as well as take photographs. I need a DSLR like this but it has to be able to take movies and have good sound quality.

Does this camera have this function and if not what would you recommend?

    -George

  • Didn't I mention that this model didn't have a movie mode? The new GH1 version does though - see my rpeview at cameralabs . com.

  • Very well presented. A++++

  • I have perused the CameraLabs site, and hadn't noticed any GH1 review yet. I was wondering if there were any plans to review the GH1 separately from the G1.

  • There are plans to do a full review, but in the meantime I have a detailed preview along with high ISO noise results for the camera versus the D90 and SX1 IS. See the preview section in the upper left corner of the front page.

  • Is it an SLR? I am doing GCSE photography and I have been told to get a DSLR, would this be suitable?? Please reply ASAP THANKS =]

  • Technically speaking it is not a DSLR becuase it doesn't have a mirror or an optical viewfinder. But it does have a big sensor and interchangeable lenses like a DSLR, along with control over depth of field, so I think it would be ok. See my review at cameralabs . com for full details. You should probably also check with the course people, but to be honest, they may not have come across this kind of camera before.

  • thanks =]

  • hi thanks very much!

  • Hi there

Thanks for a great video. I just wanted to know if this camera takes good night shots... I love taking fotos of city scapes in the evening, esp in NY. What would the quailty be like of say, for example, the Manhattan skyline in the evening?

  • If you're using a tripod, shoot with a low ISO and the results will be great with any camera. You can see sample images from the G1 in my review at cameralabs . com, and tips on night photography at dslrtips . com.

  • This camera is really atractive.

But i really want to know if the G1 is better or Olympus' E-620 which have the same retail price and the E 620's Art Filters is quite tempting. I'm really hoping to see Gordon's Video tour of the 620.

  • I will be doing a video of the E-620 in the future, but can't say when. In the meantime, I have already published my full review of the E-620 at cameralabs . com!

  • hi there,

i was wondering, what is the price for this camera?

  • Click the link to the right of the video window to go to my full review - there's up-to-date prices there.

  • look online

  • What is abture? please reply :)

  • aperture*

  • thanks for the information, yes i want the video and also still image.. over all do u think i will GO for lumix GH1? i will use it for movie and independent film, as well as the still image for promotion.. please advice me.. D90 or GH1. please make time to answer this message thank a lot ....

  • i saw this camera omg the navy blue 1 is superb attractive with micro4/3 lens .... slim and outlook pwns all other olympus camera =D

  • I had the G1 in hands and I must say this camera is just awesome !

I'm using a 1000D with some great lenses, that's the reason why I didn't buy the G1 (only a few lenses available, but excellent lenses though ..).

The build quality and the design made me fell in love with the G1, and I'm looking forward to buying one as a 2nd camera ..

  • We have several active threads on the G1 in the cameralabs forum if you fancy posting some comments there too!

  • It's a great camera.

  • thank's verey mutch.

    can i ask .

what's the good butwon nikon p80 and panasonic G1?

  • i know dslr take better photos but im a amautre photographer and im down to cameras i thinking about panasonic lumix fz28 or the panasonic g1 is it werth getting g1?

  • Well the G1 has a much bigger sensor than the FZ28, so is better for low light - see my review at cameralabs . com and feel free to discuss your options in the forum at cameralabs...

  • thanks gordin

  • Great as always gordon, thanks for the update...

    : )

  • Panasonic Lumix GH1 with HD video is soo ridiculously expensive at $1500. I would never be able to afford it.

  • Why is there noise when shooting? The mirror is gone. Is that electronically generated for aural feedback? If so can it be shut off?

Also, any plans for a portrait grip with built in battery pack?

  • The mirror's gone, but there's still a physical shutter - that's what you can hear.

  • Shutter? Okay, I'm an idiot, no doubt of it, but why oh why does a DIGITAL camera still need a shutter?

Just when I was ready to purchase a DSLR I now feel it's time to wait a few months again. I really want to read some detailed reviews of the GH-1. Video or not to video, that is the question.

  • It depends on the sensor type whether it needs a shutter or not. I agree though, it's a shame they couldn't implement a silent operation. PS - I have a preview of the GH1 at cameralabs . com...

  • Thank you for your kind replies and yes, I saw the preview. very good work but I want to see a full fledged review and then I want people to buy it and report back on it. Thank goodness memory cards have become cheap.

  • It would be highly innovative if some day someone develop a virtual shutter that fully eliminate the mechanical shutter and aperture mechanisms like on cell phones.

  • There are actually a lot of people using this camera with leica lenses using the mount described below:

search flickr with the keywords Lumix G1

  • Great review of our G1!

  • Cool im still leaning towards the canon sx1

  • Amazing camera.

    Lightweight, feature-packed..

    Thanks, Gordon.

  • Panasonic just announced G1 with video capability called "GH1".

Google it, and you'll get many hits.

  • Head on over to cameralabs . com where I have a preview...

  • That was so quick.

Thanks Gordon, I'll check it out.

  • Gordon, there 's no link to GH1 in the home page of cameralab. Only link I found was in the forum.

  • There should be! It's at the top of the front page!

  • I found it.

It seems that Panasonic made it clear they are serious about video feature by putting stereo microphones where most visible.

Now I'm searching for the price.

    Any idea?

  • very expensive for this camera, apparently this is the only down side, uk gbp £450+ with 14-40mm lens kit, however for extra 40-200mm lens is only £599 this is a bargain because alone this lens is £270+

  • atyl1972:

    Thanks for the info.

I'm in no hurry and the time is on my side.

I'll wait till the right time comes. ^_^

The price of G1 had already dropped about $150.- in a short time since the introduction, I expect the price for the GH1 will be the same way.....hopefully...

  • gordon will this camera give me a good depth of field where my subject is in focus but the background is blurry??

  • See the gallery page of my G1 review at cameralabs . com...

  • ok i see the pic of the lady with the trees and wtare etc but if i got the 45-200mm am i right in saying that i should get better blurr than that pic?

  • I can only spend a few minutes a day on youtube, so if you have any Qs, feel free to post in the cameralabs forum!

  • The manual focus system is awsome. Just perfect. I hope Pentax does this as well with the APS-C sized sensor like Samsung does. For K-mount, which I think Samsung is doing.

  • A real revolutionart digital camera compare to those evolution from other brands. Can't wait for the HD version, G2 maybe.

  • Do you know what HD means?

  • I mean HD video.

  • Thanks for the upload!!

  • i really love this camera, best part is its swivel lcd!

  • great review...but no movie mode? That's like a cell phone without a color screen.

  • That's a bad comparison. It's like a cell without a camera, and to be frank: I want to call people with my cell, not take photos, just like I want to take photos with my photo camera and not take videos. People are greedy and want all-in-one's, which always means compromises though.

  • Well, an opinion is just an opinion, and quite frankly I don't really care as to why you felt the need to be critical of mine. The thing is, it's standard now. Like inked newspapers verses parchment. lol whatever

  • This camara is way too late getting into the market...looks like a good product though

  • i like it.

  • Sorry can't get excited about this camera.

  • No Movie Mode: Killed that camera

    No lenses available :(

    Love the articulating LCD

Love the Micro Four Thirds Technology

Love the Size and Convenience of interchangeable lenses and manual hand zoom and focusing!

  • Actully i think theres a few lenses and i think you can buy an adaptor to put DSLR lenses on, no movie mode great :) its anoying when all they talk about is "oh look we added HD movie mode to our stills camera" if you can get a stills camera for about £174.99 that has HD then why are most camcorders SD?

  • Actually, no. As of 4/05/09 there are exactly two lenses available for micro 4/3, including the one that comes with the camera. A third one is slated for spring. This is a brand new mount design so it will take a while. An adaptor is available to allow the original standard 4/3 lenses to be used and I've seen an adapter online that supposedly allows other lens mounts to be used but have yet to find anyone who actually has used one.

And I agree with you, movie mode smuvie mode, who cares.

  • is there someplace where i can see the shutter speed preview in action?

  • Hi Gorden,

I've been away... 1st time I've seen you presented in HiDef. and have to say, I've never seen your shirt looking as attractive as it does here in all of YouTube's moving 1280x720 pixel glory!

    You ROCK!

  • And may I congratulate you today on your 101 videos here on the tube. Every one of them are simply excellent!

    5 stars

  • Thanks! And glad you like the HD presentation! Make sure you visit cameralabs . com for the full review...

  • yes, like everyone else is saying, very interesting camera.

    *ponders for some odd reason*

  • The control system of the camera is remarkable, it looks very user friendly.

  • Comment removed

  • Why are cameras reviewed based on movie mode? Has the definition of camera been changed already?

  • Why do imbecile's think that this is the FULL review, it is just a fraction of the review. The site has 8 very full pages, with results and comparisons. And the video feature is only a small part of the written review, and the G1 is meant for the more practical, everyday photographer, who want the use of video on the go. And gordon, did not say an external strobe is a good idea, he was just stating the fact, and if he didn't state it then you'd bash him for not speaking of it.

  • A smaller body will not accommodate external flash well. Smaller flash also means less power. Smaller will have less quality but portability. Laptop vs PC

  • very interesting camera

  • interesting camera

  • Yeah great review, and a very interesting camera.

  • awesome review thanks so much!
