  • RPG is short for role playing game, one doesnt need to have a complex leveling system in order to tell a story

  • I had this playing in my car while I drove into college one day. Needlessly to say, I was rolling in the pussy that day.

  • damn it must've been hard to get the top 100 best battle themes... there's so many awesome ones out there... Surprised MH3 isn't there though, they're mostly kinda similar to this one, epic. xD

  • got kidna mad at first when i saw #59... im happy now

  • rpg -.-

    u fail

  • Ah this song brings back so many memories :D Thanks for uploading it haha

  • Awesome theme, awesome game!

  • -_- shadow of the colossus not RPG

  • @hicb06 Thank you this is as much an RPG as Zelda is an RPG (except the adventures of Link)

  • heck yah! i luv this game!

  • Shadow of The Colossus RPG? =S

  • Not an RPG, you jackass.

  • The game doesn't even have any form of character improvement, which is the biggest key defining RPGs.

SotC is Action-Adventure, case closed. You can argue that DMC3 has character leveling even though it's an action game, but that aspect is not the biggest selling point of the game, but its deep combat engine.

This is just a failure in the uploader's account.

  • This comment is so misguided and juvenile in ways I can't even begin to describe. In fact, there is "character improvement" in SotC. By the loose term "improvement" I assume you mean ways in which to enhance some for of a character's statistics. Kill lizards in SotC then. It's like finding heart pieces in rarer form. Not to mention, there is a health/grip boost with every boss you defeat. But, if you are referring to "development" by the word "improvement,"...

  • @TheTrendSetter89

"Finding heart pieces in lizard form." I'm guessing you're one of those people who treat Zelda as RPG too.

Lizards and fruits are completely optional, and in fact, downright USELESS. You get all the stamina you need after each colossus, and you have to go out of your way to actually get killed in the game, especially because of how fast health regen is when you duck.

In fact, lizards and fruits can be completely removed without affecting the gameplay at all.

  • ...then you need to read a few books, see a few plays, and then come back to SotC and finally understand and enrich yourself in (perhaps "get" is a better term that you'll comprehend) what might be the most driven and subtle character development seen in a video game. And the fact is, if you ever looked at my video descriptions, I explicitly state this list will include games that are not traditionally considered RPGs. Why must gamers be so caught up on numbers like HP? Go troll somewhere else.

  • ...which is in contrast to some actual RPGs like FF, or Diablo, which focus on stat building and equipment.

Before you argue that you get equipment in SotC? What are they used for? You get them after you beat the game. "Stronger stabs", that's so useful... not. Screaming arrows, useless. Exploding arrows, you still need to stab to kill. Like lizards, they are completely unnecessary.

  • And what do books even have to do with this? I read books as a hobby, and frankly, even if SotC is a game that I would personally give a 9/10, to suggest that the game has deep character development is laughable.

None of the characters develop at ALL. From the start to the end, their character is constant. Wander is still that mischievous boy who stole the sword, forged a deal with the god to revive Mono. He's the exact same character from the start to the end.

  • Is there even a need or want to boost Wander's strength in the game? No, because figuring out how to tackle the colossi is the only thing that matters in those fights. It's just like a puzzle game with urgency; once you figure out how to beat someone, that's it, your only trouble is how to execute it (which is very easy).

  • Stats and equipment do not an RPG make. And I am sorry for you that you cannot see the subtle changes in Wander's character throughout the game. But I can understand why. Clearly you are not a compassionate gamer, and without that connection to Wander and Argo as a player, half the development is lost to you...

  • @TheTrendSetter89

Hahaha, I'm sorry, but Wander's slow physical change does not mean his character changes. Yes, I know which change you refer to: Wander slowly turning paler, darker, with his cape looking more rugged.

Get off your high horse. This is a nice little detail that happens throughout the game, yet it does not constitute character development, as his character remains the exact same. Go read good novels if you want real character development.

  • ...As you see him transform and struggle more and more to stand after each colossus, a dichotomy between player and avatar kicks in; a connection is established. Yes, lizards and fruit are optional. So is any piece of "equipment" in an RPG. Try a challenge run sometime and see that it's all technically optional! In SotC, the infallible and more important points of the genre are expressed. Goals are challenged. Wander questions his task to the end and so should the player.Though not you it seems.

  • Too bad too 99% of RPGs require equipment, and is not optional. Diablo? You won't survive. P4? You won't survive. FF? Generally, lack of equipment can be offset by grinding level ups, but that aspect is not available in the game.

Lol, what challenge? You mean those time attack challenges at the end? All beaten, I've got all rewards, beaten Hard Mode, and yet not once will you need health or stamina. Your supplied stamina is enough, and not once will you need extra health to take more damage

  • Congratulations. You have missed my point by a long shot. Can't say I'm surprised. You also made a glaring generalization about some mysterious 99% of RPGs. Many pats on your back for completing the time attack modes, but you're kidding yourself if you think that has any relevance to my arguments. Try again next time.

  • @TheTrendSetter89

Wow, so I made I glaring generalization with 99% of the RPGs, but you implying that equipment and skills is "technically optional" in all RPGs is not?

Congratulations. You have now taken the seat of smugness. We bow before your superiority in that sense.

Do you have any idea why I'm not the only one saying SotC is not an RPG? If not, then the point just whooshed past your closed ears and stubborn mindset.

RPG is but a tiny aspect of SotC. It's more on epic exploration.

  • Keep calling the kettle black and digging yourself a deeper hole. It's sort of amusing.

  • @KingScar06 Actually, you can beat Demon's Souls without any armor at all if you are good enough.

  • Wrong 789shadow.

All anyone has ever OFFICIALLY described RPG's as is ROLE PLAYING GAME....which is kinda vague, but as far as I'm concerned, you're playing the role of Wander. These numbers and whatnot you're talking about are only typical, they don't make an RPG.

  • Shadow of the Colossus is an action-adventure-strategy game. Close enough to an RPG IMO. What RPG doesn't have action, adventure, and strategy?

  • SoC is absolutely not an RPG

  • yeah i love this song so much it has such an exciting battle feeling to it

  • Just to clear up whether or not SotC is an RPG or not:

In RPG's, character stats like health are displayed as numbers. If a game does not have this, it is not an RPG. SOTC is an action-adventure by merit of displaying important character information by way of symbols and meters.

  • Have you forgotten? RPG means Role-Playing Game. You don't need numbers, just a feeling that you can be somebody else, battling giant, kick-ass monsters to revive your girlfriend.

  • That definition is simply too broad. That makes all games RPG's. Sotc is not an RPG.

  • @789shadow I agree. SoTC is great, but its not an RPG. RPGs are games where character statistics are given numerical values and those values increase as the game continues. In SoTC, there are health bars. Those are not a numerical value, and they do not increase according to an algorithm or pattern.

  • The problem I see with your definition, vinny, is that whether it is displayed as numbers or as health bars, it follows the same pattern behind the scenes. Therefore that is not enough by which to base what makes an RPG and other genres so different.

I'm not going to pretend to know what defines an RPG and what doesn't, but I don't think anyone else here should be doing it either.

  • @wiseman2131 that's means every game is an rpg, if you loosely define it. "role playing game" isn't even game a role playing game ? "D

  • Comment removed

  • One of the greatest games ever made.

  • epic game

  • Great music! I agree

  • lol i brought this game just so i could hear this over and over again

  • come on, no western stuff? really?

  • I Think the "Last Battle" Theme is the best... Ultimately one of the greatest music, so epic!

  • This isn't an RPG. It's action-adventure. Upgradeable stats and gear do not an RPG make.

Two things though. One, this is one of the greatest games ever, and two. this is an amazing song.

I , mean, I'm a diehard heavy metal fan and I still love the soundtrack here. It just fits so well.

  • during some of the fights in the game i noticed that the current battle theme would switch to this song right when you got to the colossus's mark

  • This dosent really sound much of a battle theme more like credits, no?

  • credits ôo

Such a heroic tune is more a "the hero appears". It's a Boss-Fight Music.

  • LOL FAIL!!!

  • *faints*

  • its an RPG cause its not all about running around throwing granades and blowing things up just because its not final fantasy dosnt mean its not an RPG

  • I kind of feel like if this game is an RPG, Tomb Raider is an RPG, as well as Super Mario Bros, and Halo too...

  • Shadow of the Colossus = Is an rp. You = don't know what an rpg is. :3

  • If you're so smart, then why don't you tell me what an RPG is?

By the way, this is you:

    :^'''''''''''q

  • who the fuck cares if it's not an RPG. It kicks so much ass that it's every game genre in one.

  • This may not be an RPG, but the epicness of this games music defies the laws of video game genres!

  • dude yes it is your playing the roll of a kid whos trying to revive this dead chick

  • LOL

this game is NOT an RPG

    not even CLOSE to it

u just walk around and pwn monsters...<.<

    not an RPG

    u lier

  • Guys.

This is a platformer. Enough with the RPG bullcrap. You're jumping and climbing on stuff for the entire game.

  • You jump and climb on stuff in Kingdom Hearts, as well.

  • There's no statistical character development of any kind (gaining exp. points to level up for example). This couldn't be defined as an RPG by any standard, its an action-adventure.

  • In during an array of retards who think that an RPG is defined by character stat development. This is wrong.

  • Actually, it's right.

  • Um... This is not an RPG. c.c

  • who cares what the genre is the game kicks so much ass. so there, its in the kick ass genre

  • This game cursed me with the SOTC curse. I had no choice but to play through it 8 times.

  • @vikingninja72 I played it through 13 times and on all of them i still managed to get lost on my way to some of the bosses XD

  • @vikingninja72

    8

It has not let me stop playing it until i sold it back to the game store

    (you may kill me)

I then promptly ran back in the day the ps3 version was released

I have ow played it 18 times

  • Well said, my friend.

  • finally someone cleared up the whole kick ass genre debate

  • @doobsmcgee LOL

  • Amazing. The nostalgia..

  • gotta be one of the best games evr!!!

  • The game doesn't even have digital displays on character stats, nor does it have you playing through roles of different characters.

  • lol, I remember yelling at my T.V. "Ok, lets do this motherf***er!" Such good memories :')

  • i sya that to good game;)

  • This isn't an RPG no matter which way you try to slice it.

  • role playing, you are the boy and its meant for you to live his life. thats how i slice it. you need to stop looking at cliches and stereotypes. Just because there is no leveling up and you dont have to collect a party or new weapons does not mean it isnt an rpg.

  • ur right, its shooter LOL

    OF COURSE IS AN RPG

  • i knew revived power should be on the top ten

epic song ever!!!!! at least against giant foes

  • Not an RPG. Description is pointless. No matter how hard the author tries this isn't an RPG. Just say top 100 favorite video game music.

  • but if that were true, this list would be almost entirely different

  • This was one of the greatest games I have ever played...

  • This was *the* greatest game *anyone* has ever played. I'm swooning with nostalgia as we speak. XD

  • RPG or not, this is so epic, it's an exception.

  • The fact that this has gained 4 places already tells me the lister doesn't know much about RPGs :P

  • Read the video descriptions please.

  • And your description invalidiates the term "RPG Battle Theme" just because you are of the opinion that RPG fans would play this game does not make it an RPG. I found this video randomly and don't plan on checking out anymore of your videos since your opinion is backed by ignorance.

  • his opinion is backed by ignorance? i think that yours is more likely the case. What qualifications do you have for a game to be an rpg? the acronym stand for role playing and thats the only point of this game. leveling and item collecting are not required of an rpg.

  • Try looking up what the COMPANY ITSELF categorizes the game as.

  • it settles on the one it finds most fitting, not the only possible genre.

  • With that logic every game is an RPG. In the game you shoot arrows thus it must be a shooter too right?

Also leveling is a big part of RPGs but it isn't the defining factor.

  • your example is a bad one, youve made it too simple. shooter is a very specific genre and (example) zelda includes shooting arrows but not in the shooter style and it isnt a staple of gameplay. Perhaps if it was one of the main features of the game it cold then have the sub genre of shooter. It can easily be an rpg as well as another genre. In fact rpg is more like an overhead to genres. Many games are labelled, Adventure rpg, or action rpg because rpg itself is able to fit most games.

  • The game is an Action Adventure. Just like Drakken is for the PS2. RPG concept is much much different. Game FAQs also says it is. RPGs must contain the level element, random battles etc for it to be classified as one.

  • gives me the sense like if i'm flying!!!

  • YOU:gives me the sense like if i'm flying!!!

    ME: ditto

  • I have replay SotC again. It was just an awesome game.

  • Most epic music for waking-mountain killing.

  • I would even put this soundtrack in a best sidescoller song list.

    THAT'S how good it is.

  • love<3

  • LOVE THIS SONG!

  • Shadow of the Colossus is not an RPG

  • Ok then Mr smarty pants then just what is it?

I say it is an RPG just a VERY subtle one, there are elements that make it an RPG, there are choices, your character DOES progress throughout in several ways, his grip meter, health and he gets slowly possessed by dormin, he actually physically changes with each colossus you kill and this change leads up to the dramatic conclusion of the story. He makes a choice. you build up stamina with fruit. You also can attain different weapons throughout.

  • I dont think the abilty to expand health and other meters over the course of the game makes stuff an RPG. In most hack and slash games this happens too. It would be an action game but it has so little action i guess its mostly role playing, which would make it a very vaige Role Playing Game.

  • The game is not an RPG. The creators don't even classify it as an RPG.

  • Regardless, it's a good song to listen to.

  • nope its not a role playing game

  • read the description dipshit...he said he will put a few adventure games too.

  • i love it when people act hard and call people names on youtube :D makes me lol

  • RPG means role playing game. so technically, almost every game is an RPG

  • even wrestling games are RPGs

your role playing as a wrestler leveling up there stats level up and using diifrent atks

  • i don't care if it isn't a rpg or not, it has great music, however

  • I think this game falls under the genre of 'Adventure'. Maybe even 'Platformer', considering the amount of climbing and jumping involved.

  • hey this game is for ps2 too rockleex13

  • This song is EPIC TO THE MAX. It like just when it gets to sounding like OH NO MY GRIP METER u stab it at the last second and u win the black noodle strands of doom.

  • This song will never fail to make me think of Pirates of the Caribbean.

  • I knew it!! I knew this one would surely come! You and i have a similar interest in music.Excellent!!!

  • I almost cry every time I hear this song.

    And there I go. T.T

  • u spaz this isnt even an action rpg mass effect is an action rpg

  • but this is an action game!!!!!!! you its ok to put one song of this game but it isnt a rpg

  • action adventure rpg,rpg doesnt always have to be like final fantasy you know?

  • No, it doesn't.

Although Shadow of the Colossus still isn't anything close to being an RPG.

  • Its a puzzle action-adventure game, not even remotely close to being an rpg as it lacks so many basic elements that constitutes an RPG.

  • Ahh I love this song! ^__^

    This game is great. :]

  • is this game good looks epic is it for 360

  • Playstation 2.

    It's fantastic!

  • Wow, I'm surprised someone mistook this as a 360 game! That must tell a lot about the graphics! ^_^ I'm sure the huge scale plays a part too.

Anyways, whether people like it or not, this is an Action RPG. If people have forgotten, your stats increase as you defeat the bosses... or as you collect more lizards and fruits.

You also unlock multiple weapons and outfits that grant different powers too.

  • I think this is the best song in SotC

nice to see it on #7

  • I wish I had bought the game back then

...but it must be cheaper now! =D

    this song sounds really good

  • i got this game and locked it up lol. its fucking badass. my boss got a bigscreen theatre built. gunna hook my ps2 up on the theatre lol

  • Shadow of the Colossus is a great game, but its not a RPG, by far

  • favorite!

  • Man this game was pro it was so great the ending was hard to understand though.

  • You guys dont read the description at all do you.

  • shadow of the colossus is not a rpg ¬¬'

  • I agree, this is awesome music but I wouldn't call SotC an rpg.

  • Yes it is.

  • sounds heroic.

  • This game is really good!

    beautiful scenery and this song...EPIC!

  • I love this game and it's song !!! so cool !!!

  • This song always made me feel heroic.

  • Awesome song, but it's not an rpg

  • The only games I plan to buy for PS3 are MGS4, Kingdom Hearts 3, God of War 3, and The next Team Ico game. Loved SotC to death. And this is a killer song.

  • this game was really good...the story could have been better but graphics, gameplay, music i give 10

  • the music in shadow of the colossus was by no means bad, but the music transitions killed it for me music wise.

  • this was a good choice but i would have preferred #31 to be switched with this, #31 gives you more of a "winning the battle" kind of feel, and its always the one i remember.

  • great song

  • I'm so glad to see SotC finally getting recognition. I love the game to death, and to see so many of its battle themes on this list is satisfying.
