you don't need a goddamn degree to be sucsessfull ...its always been through hard work and persaverence with anything that you do in life...I have a G.E.D. and I make 70,000 a year in the utilitie buisness...plant operator. our ancestors became sucsessfull through hard work persaverence they certaintly did not have degrees let alone a college in their day in fact most people with degrees make less than I do ,high school teachers for example, wish it wasn't true but there it is
"Hey look! There goes Alex. Boy, he does have lots of money -- look at his car. He's doing well. I hear he bought a new house -- bigger than the last one. Nice place. And there's that club he owns, the 'Orbit Room'. Sometimes I go there. That's a nice place, too. I went there the other night, a while back, and there was Alex, playing his guitar with the house band. You'd never know he's a rock star. He's doing well. He's set himself up great."
I love it..."go to our gov't schools then go into massive debt at University", meanwhile the guy has all the unique talent he needs and made millions more than he would of...it's like a all star college QB who stay's his senior year and passed up millions and we say "how heroic"...my point is University is not the all in all.
@CityslickCaptain unfortunately you are right, people would rather get their free gov't money than actually make something of themselves....in which the band, particularly Peart, was warning us of the danger of collectivism and group think.
This is edited at:50. What he originally said was , "I want to drive around in big car called Red Barchetta and get people to go, hey there goes Alex....
@cbarrett34 Yea because he was so sure of the success that the band will have, he thought he didn't need to graduate, and go on to college/university. Although he did finish grade 11.
@TheGuines13 so, alex was around 17 here? so that would've been 1970. he looks a lot older than 17. perhaps he could've been 18, so that would've been 1971
The reason all should finish High School is because of how employers judge the difference between one with and one without the diploma. Alex was a virtuoso and knew it, he KNEW it. If your not a virtuoso or self-driven that HS Diploma or GED Shows ya have a certain ammount of intellectual muscle and a certain ammount of problem solving ability. The Math or History or Gym offered in HS is not so you go and do those things later, its so ya have muscle and mind strength at the end of it.
@badback22 And even if you know you're a virtuoso, you have to prove it to everyone else before success follows. Millions of kids know how good they are. A handful are able to prove it. In the meantime, that "stupid paper" will get a job that keeps food on the table.
@mzmadmike truth is there are alot of 'viruoso ' players out there who have nothing to say musically . I have known guys that could play as well as alot of the successful artists , but they couldnt write a song , or they were not as fortunate as Alex was in surrounding himself with others of equal vision and talent. Alex is great but he also is lucky . It takes both
man im going through this shit right now its tough because i want to quit school to make music but the difference is that alex had a stable band, my bandmates are total tools, they make it so hard to get ahead with their stupid egos
@valdivia562 So make music and finish school. Then see about college classes in performance and theory, AND in business. The difference between a great unknown and a successful great is presentation and marketing. Rush got lucky with a brilliant manager. Most bands don't get that combination of talent and promotion.
@Scavenger1994 This clip is part of the Allan King documentary "Come on Children", about 10 Canadian kids who wanted to get away from everything and everyone, so they lived alone for 10 weeks on a farm. One of the kids is Alex Lifeson. This scene is the one when the parents come to check on the kids.
notice Lifesons hypnotic influence on these young chicks...they are gyrating in their chairs like cambodian monks. Lifeson almost reminds me of Manson in this.
@davidbrucemusicvideo purchase the Rush documentary "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage" and get this and many more rare clips from the band, and a sharper perspective of the bands history, it awesome!
