Wtf?! They made a movie?! The manga was amazing, but this looks absolutely terrible. What's up with the singing? The English?? THE NON JAPANESE PEOPLE?! Seriously ;___;
This may be the worst movie in the history of cinema. It certainly is the worst manga adaptation. I'd honestly take Dragon Ball over this mess. TDC is THE most emotionally gripping manga I've read, since Akira and Barefoot Gen.
This movie basically gives the manga the finger for an hour and a half.
If this isn't THE worst movie in the history of cinema, it's definitely up there. I think debatably this makes even the infamous "Troll 2" look good by comparison.
I wonder if Umezu had anything to do with this. Probably not, but then again, Umezu IS also known as a humorist. Maybe after playing the manga as straightforward horror, he figured he'd treat the movie as a colassal joke. =)
Hi ppl. This is the african american kid, that was in this movie. First off. I just want to thank all the haters, for still commenting on this movie that was made in 1986. Its actually exciting to see ppl commenting, good or bad, from a movie that was made when you wasn't even born yet. Thank you. Ppl are commenting like it was made yesterday, with today's technology.
@marboclepto A lot of the hate you're seeing is just a misdirected sort of affection for weird and not traditionally good film. Mystery Science Theatre 3000 syndrome, "movies you love to hate". And you have to admit, this is a bizarre and alienating film, where the only direction it takes is into madness. It's completely inexplicable; the wild shifts in tone, the decision to alternate between English and Japanese, the characterizations like a space alien trying to write convincing humans...
@ChildrenofAmory I mean a proper adaptation would be nice, of course, but I'm a big fan of Obayashi and this film is just bananas, so I can't not love it in its own special way on its own terms.
I agree with marboclepto. Your description of the characterization as being "like a space alien trying to write convincing humans" nails the strange, otherwordly feel of this whole thing.
In many ways it's like a dream. Dreams are usually foggy, indistinct, and uncertain, and you sort of drift through them not having your feet firmly planted on the ground. Movies like this replicate that feeling to a T, right down to people's odd behavior and the muffled "soundtrack."
well i can see why it would be hard to make movie about kids being killed by being shot, strangle, falling from high places, hit by a car, mutanting, eaten by weird bugs thingys, stabed, impaled, burned alive, no food, illness, poison, eaten by i think sand squads, and beaten. any way this just looks random and stupid. why are there white of black kids. is this some kind of school for gifted student that known world wide and why was the kid feeling his mom that just wrong but i guess it the 80
just read the whole manga today and have to say it is really a masterpiece. Haven't watched the film yet but it looks like a comedy :D. you can read the manga from unixmanga . com / onlinereading / Drifting_Classroom.html
The manga was incredible. So incredible, that is made me cry in French class while I was reading the last volume. But seeing these scenes made me laugh XD
In the manga, some of the students eat another student, flesh was eaten by imaginary bugs, Sho could contact his mother, a baseball player was killed, kids commited suicide, and I think the janitor became mentally retarded.
I don't think that was included in the movie, was it...? <:)
America also made their own terrible movie adaption of the Drifting Classroom, called the Drifting School with Drake Bell. Cant no country do the manga any Justice ?
wow....its kind of ironic how well the japanese can do comics/manga but suck so much at making movies, not only this movie but a lot of others aswell...
@boitahaki well, yeah, otherwise i wouldn't have said all that, right? Sorry, but in my opinion japanese really really suck at movies(but are gods at animation)
@boitahaki no particular kind, just like with any other genre, or any other form of media. It's not about the style, but about how you pull it off. However i know what i don't like, that is screamer. Ironically japanese horror movies(at least those that i watched) don't seem to use them as much as americans do.(however it's rare to begin with that i like horror movies, like i said, too much screamer)
That's waaaaay to broad a generalization. Some of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the world are Japanese. Ozu and Kurosawa, to name two. And the recent spate of what in the west we've come to call "J-Horror" are pretty tops. The original "Ring" for instance.
Still, it does seem to be true that when Japanese movies are bad, they're REALLY, REALLY bad.
@Marbles471 Well, you see, if i happen to see one or two japanese movies that are good, even if i were to see 100 others that were bad, i would never say something like "all japanese movies are bad" but i didn't. And i didn't like the Ring either, though i have never seent he american(!) version.
So while it may be generalized, it surely isn't "waaaaay to broad". At least for ME.
(p.s.: WIth "Japanese movies" i obviously mean movies that were done for japanese audience)
When they started the chorus line and the bean thing started tap-dancing, I realized that this was nothing like the horrific fever-dream I just finished reading an hour ago. Pretty freaking awesome as a standalone, though.
Coming here after reading the manga... what.. the...fuck...
Although this went off on a completely different tangent than the manga, it does look interesting in its own right...and the soccerboy sounds so lame its funny XDD
hhhuh..... old movies are amazing in their own way .......although i was like WTF??.. at one time but ............ and it seems nice at the some points.......but i'm never going to watch it ...... the original manga is much better in my opinion!!!
I just finished the manga, Wtf!? why are there so many americans here?! What's that alien bean (Pun intended) !? I seriously doubt this is as good as the manga...
This movie is such a disgrace. The adaptation of the story and characters made the story look so bad. I mean the main character Sho, is supposed to be way more mature in the manga. He never dry-humps his mom in the beginning.
to be fair, those who never read the manga may find this movie entertaining. but for us whom read the manga, we naturally demand at least it follow the same quality that the manga offer. in all honesty, i totally agree with you. i eager to know who play sho, saki, nishi, otomo and the rest. yet, what i find in this clip is not only discouraging but a total blasphemy. the sheer ingenuity in the manga is nowhere to be found in this movie. let us just hope those who never read the manga enjoy this.
The drifting classroom was an awsome manga but the 1987 movie...ugh is all I can say. I havent seen the whole movie but Ive seen bits of it in someones and this vids review and it looks like crap...
The manga is brilliant in depicting the reality of violence against children, and the violence children are capable of, much in line with Lord of the Flies. I dislike looking at movies, comics or books that show this kind of violence, but I can't deny the sheer genius and effort the author put into the series. Naysayers will probably lament at how horrible it is to portray kids dying horrific deaths, but they're just denying the cruel reality that doesn't distinguish between child and adult.
o_O' The only similarity with the manga is the drifting classroom! WTF?! And "I want to have your baby Sho, someday soon"? Really? Sho smirks odd after her line... The manga is cruel, realistic (you know what I mean) and dark. This is just... wow...
Hi... I played the african american kid in this movie "Kenny". Some ppl dont realize, this movie was made in 1986. Special effects wasn't too hot back then. As far as a teenager being in a class with 8 and 10 yrs old. Those younger kids was considered gifted, they were bumped up a few grades. It was a junior high school 6th thru 8th. I enjoyed filming it..
I disagree. Special effects were fine in 1986. Look what Spielberg and Lucas had done a decade earlier. Bad special effects are just bad special effects, in any era. Only difference is back then it was all optical stuff and trick photography----today it'd probably be bad CG effects. =)
By the way, if that's really you, I gotta ask----what thoughts passed through your mind when they gave you that golliwog figurine to hold up? I couldn't believe it when I saw that scene.
@Marbles471 Your bringing up George Lucas. He was on a planet by himself, during those times. As far as my piggy bank. lol Japan doesn't have a prejudice bone in their body. There way of doing things might be a bit strange, but never an intention to create harm. They also cut about 40 pages from the script, because of the budget. If they would've had a bigger budget. We would've actually filmed it in Australia, in the sand dunes.
Anyone know if there is an animation version? I was looking for anime (thought i heard there is one) and came across this. The manga is one of the darkest and finest I have ever read.
Is it only me but i thought this movie seems abit too light hearted and cheerful?? I know there is a TV drama version too but so far manga is still the best.
Watch "House" from the same director of this one. The guy is a very peculiar director, mixing all diferent genres together. I do wish they had tried to stick to the atmosphere of the original manga, but the movie is still a beast of it's own.
The only thing I've ever seen that even comes close to the schizophrenic nature of this movie is a bizarre Dutch film called "Schatjes" (1984) that was dubbed into English as "Army Brats." Out of nowhere, in the middle of the story, the characters just suddenly burst into song, musical-style----just like they do in the classroom here. Then it ends as quickly as it began.
I live in Japan and read and watch many of Umezz's works, but I never heard of him coming up with an anime version of the comic.
As for the TV drama series, I looked it up on wiki Japan and apparently there is no violence, or monsters of any kind. It's basically like a love story. Note the title is Long Love Letter Drifting Classroom (ロング・ラブレター 漂流教室)
The American actors must've been thinking "WTF are we doing?"
