  • Great vid. The only bad thing about the new line being built was trains from Kidderminster (my hometown) were diverted from the Smethwick Rolfe Street line to this new longer way round...

  • @funkyjunkyjai

I agree, even though it was good for certain areas to have the line extended to Smethwick, the withdrawal of services from Kidderminster, Stourbridge etc to New Street has made the journey to Birmingham longer. They should really bring back the service direct to New Street! I still go to New Street but it's a pain having to change at Smethwick Galton Bridge, it is however still quicker than staying on the train to Snow Hill or Moor Street!

  • I love old clips like this, Im just wondering now how does it look in 2011 filmed from the same spots? - Im not a rail user, neither am I familiar with Snow Hill station, so Im fascinated to see the changes that have taken place. I remember those blue trains very well.

Great video thanks for posting :-)

  • Birmingham desperately needs better transport infrastructure. Snow Hill should be rebuilt much closer to the original design. This dingy dungeon has only a small fraction of the capacity actually required. Why of why does Birmingham always have to get palmed-off with third-rate planners and designers with less vision than Mr.Magoo...? Seen the plans for the new New St. Station...? Another monstrosity. Poor old Brum....shafted again.....!

  • Snow Hill used to be a wonderful light and airy station, dripping with character and history. Not only that, it was a very effective station. Sad to see they not only demolished it, but even raped it by selling-off vital land. Typical of the sort of grasping short-termists who have been wrecking the railways for years, and who would be incomprehensible to the real visionaries who built the railways in the first place.

  • Was the extension a reclaim of old railway? gosh used to go via smethwick galton bridge almost 2 times a week

  • cool

  • Doesn't it look strange with the lines ending before heading towards stourbridge

  • To think that there are 8 trains an hour now!

  • Can't believe how that's changed..I used to watch the steam trains come in from Paddington there when I was little.

  • looks odd as a terminus with birmingham being my home town its only fair i come here on sat
